Dolphins Reportedly Front Runner To Land De Trey Flowers

I’m confident big FA signings won’t be a trend with this FO. That said, Flowers is THE guy to make an exception. With almost certainly starting a rookie qb within the next two years we can spend on guys that Flores believes are scheme and culture fits.

I’d also watch for Mitch Morse. Aside from that, expect 2nd-3rd tier signings on 1-2 year prove it deals.

If you’re going to sign FAs, might as well be young, producing, leaders who are reliable and on their 2nd contract. I’d rather they overpay for homegrown talent that fits that mold, like Howard, before a player like Flowers. But he’d be a great signing if paired with one of the great rookie DEs in this class.

Flowers is close to that mold, but he missed most of his 1st year to injury. He doesn’t get a ton of sacks; especially on a team that doesn’t have competition at DE. I like that Flores coached him, was on a championship team and is an all around good player.

Forget about tanking. They need to start building now. It would be a much better signing than the crap they’ve been signing. And they’re really only a year away from having a shot at a wild card spot if they get a top QB next year in the draft.

If Flores and the other ex-Patriot coaches can lure him to a team friendly contract it would be money worth spending. We get a young Wake cornerstone for 7-8 years. It allows us more flexibility in the Draft this year. Get a DT, 2 guards, CB, receiver to replace Parker and we are starting to plug our holes. Pick up some blue collar free agents and undrafted kids for depth and development. Roll with Fales & Faulk this year and 2020 we get our QB even if we need to trade our entire draft.

It'll be a good move. 25 year old pass rusher when the team has a 37 year old Wake and nothing of quality.

5yr/75mil would be a good deal for the dolphins. The going rate for the top edge rushers is eclipsing 20mil now.

they can get wildcard this yr. 6 spot up in air every yr. this team is not that bad. people on this site going over board. this team need good Coach and good Gm. to take this team to next level. we need add young talent who can play 16 games. let old guy go who cannot play about half season

With the expected cap cuts for Miami, over the next 2 seasons, there's plenty of money available to sign Flowers. He's 25 yrs old and already knows the system. 2 key elements IMHO, that makes Flowers the quintessential, "FIT" for Miami. While I'm skeptical of spending the money to sign a guy like Flowers, he's not going to make enough of a difference to push Miami out of a possible top 5-8 draft pick in 2020. To me he's, just a piece being added to the building of a possible sustainably good team? Not the answer. For $70M I'm ok with it. He's worth taking a chance. The one F/A I can potentially live with!!!

our defense will be better this yr. our offense will be up and down. maybe another 7-9 season.

People get too caught up in the word "tanking". Like you referenced, all it implies is building from the ground up and not saddling yourself with massive, potentially foot-stabbing, contracts while shedding bad contracts from previous years.

Signing Flowers would be a lot like signing Suh but this time the team is aware that the one player quick fix isn't gonna do it and this would negatively impact the ability to build a roster lacking in talent at every position. Or it's the Dolphins and they sign him to a 10 year deal that gets restructured every season because learning from mistakes is harder than translating sanskrit.

I have no issue with signing Trey Flowers as long as we don't go silly on the contract, and in turn add players to that front seven to support him. It's like you say, we aren't one player away, we need more than that. But Flowers, at the right price, could be an important piece to the puzzle. He's still young and got his best years ahead. His addition could take the pressure off any new drafted players from needing to produce from the get go.

Also, the idea of a multi year rebuild is very much dependant on the quarterback. If we draft Haskins, Lock, Murray or Jones and they have a strong rookie year on the way to let's say 8-8, then it is all about adding depth to the supporting cast because our aim in year two would be to challenge for the play offs. So while we need to rebuild, the speed at which it occurs will be dependent on finding the next quarterback. Conversely, miss on the quarterback and the rebuild takes longer, and perhaps increases the odds of a high pick.

I don't think we will be signing many big name FAs under Flores. But we can't fill all needs through draft alone. I think Flowers will be an exception. 15/5 seems to be a concern for some. But we are in a unique position. I say front load 70-80% of the contract over the first 3 years. I think that would eliminate almost all the risk.

i think $15 mil per is light. More like $18 mil per.

It’s tbe one edge option I’d be interested in although I do think tbe scheme does some of the driving here even.

Only 25 years old though is a bonus and something you are gonna pay for

I was thinking the same thing. OV got 17 mil, 3 YEARS AGO (5 year, 85 mil, 52.5 guaranteed) for about the same type of production. Yes, he had one anomaly type year with 11.5 sacks but to me they are 7-8 sack guys who get a lot of pressure from different spots and play the run well.

Given all the talk from the front office this off-season about repeating the same mistakes, this would be a hard sell for me. The guy was a 4th round pick. This is what Miami needs to do....draft and develop.

I have to call BS on the "front runner" stuff. If it turns out to be true then I know the FO is still full of it.

Despite being in rebuild mode, I could be on board with this.

He is young and can be relied upon by Flores to implement the new defensive schemes.

Moreover, I think the top DEs will all be off the board at 13. If a guy like Allen, Ferrell or Sweat is still available, absolutely draft them, but if not it gives us the flexibility to go CB or even QB at 13 and not lose out on bringing in much needed talent at the DE position.

I mean as much as rebuilding in the draft we all would like to do, free agency is a very important aspect of a rebuild.

People get antsy at price but a high price is much more preferable than signing Mario Williams and Andre Branch.

Kid is a glove fit and if Miami get antsy at QB and gives up a few draft picks, having a stud DE come in could be away to keep the DE position stong in the face of losing Quinn and potentially Wake.

Don’t just fill for the sake of filling. Get quality FAs and draft well on day 2 and 3.
