Compensatory Picks

I'm looking at it from a bigger picture than that. But yes, if it was teams who didn't do well the year before consistently getting the best draft hauls, than maybe the system would have value. Why do we need a system that allows the best teams to exploit it? They already know how to best work FA and the draft. We really needed to invent another way?

If this comp system wasn’t in place, the well run teams wouldn’t allow those free agents to walk and the would find the best way to use the system that was in place.

That sounds fine with me. Than teams have to pay top dollar if they want to keep their guys just like everyone else. They just wouldnt be rewarded for deciding not to.

The Patriots have gotten very little out of the comp picks they've acquired in the last 20 years.

Literally next to nothing.

Yeah they just got Tom Brady out of it. I think that counts for a little more than nothing.

Scott Pioli drafted Tom Brady in 2000, that one move can’t be the end all, be all for doling out credit.

Bill Belichek is average at best, at drafting.

I hate the Patriots more than anyone else and may be a reason I don't watch much football this year (that roughing the passing call against Brady in the KC game had me really questioning the league is rigged), but how can you say they are average at drafting?

Yes, they are cheaters and refs always call in their favor, but they have won 6 Superbowls the past 20 years and won the AFC East each year the past 10 years. They are competitive every year. Every team swings and misses in the draft. The Patriots are smart in that they always load up on picks, trade away picks for higher picks the following year, and always seem to get comp picks.
