New regime.
New O system.
New D system.
Roster purge.
Youth movement.
Focus on future (not "win now").
Develop. Build. Team.

Beyond that -- define it as you will.

Thank you. Succinctly put.

That's a rebuild.

Tanking implies one is playing to lose.

What if they get all of the above right in this one offseason (sure Bob)? Is that a tank job? Nope.

They are going to do the best they can, put the best product on the field that they can, following the above post (at least I pray that they are).

We've got to clean the books/cap. That entails zero ridiculous spending.

An influx of youth to grow under the new systems. The inexperience will most likely get us crushed. It goes with the territory.

And a new/rookie QB this year or next is going to most likely have growing pains on a re-tooling (oh sht- found a better word) team.

It's all a part of the plan (I hope).

Perfect post.

If Luke Falk, Jake Rudock, or David Fales is behind center in game 1 on...it's a tank job.

Last unofficial tank job was 2011...guess who was the captain of the ship that year?

Are we all in agreement that we're most likely going to suffer this season?

Wouldn't you rather suffer with a young QB that, who the heck knows in this crazy world, might show us some star progress?

Or would you rather suffer with an we-all-ready-know vet?

We can't know for sure, but I voted tanking. Look, that Patriots system simply does not work without an exceptional QB with a very specific skillset. The guy to run that is not in the 2019 draft, so no matter what patch-job the fans envision, it is only a temporary solution--including drafting a QB in the 1st round. Saddling Coach Flores to one of these QB's almost ensures his Dolphins coaching tenure ends miserably in a few years. I suspect that means Grier would be gone as well. These guys know that. I don't see them investing in winning until they have a solution for the QB position. And coincidentally, the 2020 draft class has guys that fit the bill.

Not every QB has the same style. Russell Wilson is different from Cam Newton and both are different from Tom Brady. This Patriot system was tailored for a QB like Tom Brady, that means just being "accurate" isn't enough. It means one-read QB's are not in consideration. It means guys who the coach calls the plays for them are not good enough to make this offense hum. It does not require elusiveness or running ability. It does require exceptional blocking. It is a very specific system, and if we're going to use this system, we need a QB with those very specific skills--phenomenal pre-snap read, great audibler, hyper-precise, clockwork timing, etc.

Either we mortgage the future in 2020 to move up and get one of those QB's, or we tank in 2019 and select them normally and use the rest of the draft picks to build a team around him. Seems simple. They've let us know that's what they want to do as clearly as the league rules will allow them to do. Now we just wait and see whether they follow through with the plan.

By virtue of a rebuild and purge of the roster and probably awful QB play- the team will in essence ‘tank’ or whatever you want to call it so- or have a bad record with very few wins in 2019, and maybe beyond that.

So I’m with jdw - both. by essentially what they will do- and not do-to the roster.

Let them make moves, then we'll be able to lean one way or another... One thing's for certain, they're not going to tell us...

Though rebuilding is too strong a word for what they are doing, I am sure they are rebuilding if it's true they are handling the lines this year, and going QB next year...Which I also don't believe 100%, because if they get a chance at one of the two top QBs this year, they might pull the trigger.
i agree it would impossible to pass up Murray or Haskins at 13 , but if they're not there we have so many potential day one defensive starters to pick from....this time just don't reach or take an injured player ( Jordan, Parker etc )

Whatever you want to call it, this team isnt going to be very good next year. Its time for a deep cleansing of this entire roster. Ignoring the elephant in the room (QB), our oline and dline on pretty terrible. Dline is probably one of the worst if not the worst. Oline is far from a productive unit. Its in the bottom half of the league. We have Tunsil which is a huge piece but little outside of him. James is servicable if we keep him.

Linebackers are pretty bad to begin with and now they aren't very well suited for this scheme. They will likely all be replaced in two years.

Love Minkah and Howard but we don't have near the depth at DB that will allow us to successfully run the system Flores wants to run.

In two years, who do we really want to have on this defense that is currently on the team. Minkah. Howard. Taylor. Godchaux maybe. Baker maybe (Flores isn't gonna like a 220 pound backer).

We need to start building the foundation for this defense this year. Forget about a half ass attempt at QB in this draft.

This team has been “rebuilding” for almost 20 years (“3 years” is always the magical timeframe for some reason, but I don’t think there’s any evidence of that being the case). There’s no such thing. Nothing matters until you have a legit QB and you’re simply far less likely to land that if you’re picking in the teens every year after 8-8 seasons.

Yes, which is why I'm proposing a fan initiative that I like to call:

Third and longneck

When our poorly performing 2019 Dolphins get into yet another 3rd down and long, rather than despair or shout obscenities in frustration, let's pop open another longneck beverage. Sure, it may take some dedication, because it will mean opening a lot of beers, but if we drink them with friends I think we can manage popping one longneck every 3rd and long and still have a good time.

They’re rebuilding and viewing the 2019 season as a wash. The closest you’ll hear the organization say they’re tanking is when Ross said they may only win 3-4 games next year but they want to rebuild the right way. It’s a very fine line but as Wanny pointed out the answer is both.

Disagree. The only rebuild was 2008-09 when the Trifecta churned more than half the roster. For years his team has believed they were close and that a free agent or two would get them to the top.

I think the powers to be are finally no longer working under the pretense that the team is simply a few players away. We are many, many players away. This is such a breath of fresh air because for as long as I can remember we have been a team trying to get to the playoffs with bandaid fixes and failing to take into account that the team just simply lacks a core to add those pieces around.

The task is a daunting one and honestly, none of it will matter if the team can't find the right QB. Digital does a good job explaining the type of QB the team will look for so I won't go into more details, but in the end, I think you will see us fill the team with players that are defined by team-first attitude and intelligence. Does that mean tank or rebuild...doesn't really matter, they are not mutually exclusive. The team needs to get younger, the team need to build a core and a culture, and we are going to have to deal with some poor seasons as a result. The hope is that there will be a pay off eventually.

Unfortunately, I stopped drinking beer so I'm screwed.

And a third and scotch is not a good idea.
