Profootballtalk: Report: Dolphins Want Minkah Fitzpatrick To Play Safety Long-term

I don't think you're crazy at all. I bought he played the slot far better than any other positions. His play at safety was pretty meh honestly.

Glad I'm not the only one that saw that. I agree and think his best position is in the slot. Not the boundary and not the FS position.

Honestly, I saw a flat foot guy that was out of position and took a few bad angles when he played the position for us. Of Course, he was just thrusted back there when guys were hurt. I get that! But, I personally think he's a better DB for us than FS. I hope I'm wrong but based off the limited sample that's what i saw.
Brother keep a close eye on him this year. I am willing to bet your assessment will change. He is no longer a rookie, he is going to get reps actually playing the position, and he has the whole offseason to prepare. Some of what you see at FS is reactionary, true, but a lot of it is anticipation as well. Knowing your opponents and their tendencies is a vital part of becoming a good FS. I have faith.

I also think he is a better slot than boundary corner or free safety. If we had a front office that new what they were doing, they could have had Minkah in the slot with Jessie Bates III at free safety going forward. Instead they draft 2 tight ends because Gesicki cant block!!! We also could of had a first round talent in the 4th round (DT Maurice Hurst) instead of drafting Smythe who played less than 20% of the snaps last year. I hope Grier can learn from prior front office mistakes.

This is not what his coaches told him .. this is what a reporter is writing .. and how are making opinions off of a rookie season where he only practice slot and never even camped at cb

Minkah's value is that he will be above average just about anywhere you put him. I dont think he'll be elite at any one position though... I expect that he'll be moved around a lot in the defensive backfield.

You are out of your mind. Some of his stats at slot were already in elite range.

I dont think not playing Minkah at FS warrants such an outrage. Thats not where he played the most in college and its not where he played his best ball for the Fins... Personnally, I think he'll make the most impact the closer they put him to the LOS, and if you're going to give him snaps at Safety, they should do so in 3 safeties packages.

He can play FS, but yes. He always played close to the LOS in Bama and was a stud doing it

The closer he is to the action the better. but he can surely play FS at a high level as well

Thank goodness. Burke was an awful DC, but homeboy had 3 safeties on the defense and only one was playing the correct position. Jones as a free, Minkah as a boundary CB, ****ing nuts. No wonder we would get torched...CBs looking back for safety help to wonder where the hell Reshad went and he's up by the line of scrimmage because he bit hard on the play action.

Don't have the numbers, but I believe NE uses its Safeties in man coverage more than most teams, so it'd make sense from that angle. If you're expecting Ed Reed or Earl Thomas, though, you're going to be disappointed. Fitzpatrick doesn't have the instincts to have that kind of range or be that kind of playmaker at FS. He's best in man coverage.

Thats the bottom line IMO... Im fine either way because you'll get great production regardless. What I disagree with is the notion that playing him a CB is a dumb move. I think the value you'll get from either spot is very close and not worth that big of a debate...

Imagine thinking Minkah wasn't a safety
