Profootballtalk: Report: Dolphins Want Minkah Fitzpatrick To Play Safety Long-term

When has Minkah's primary position been FS?

Never mentioned Free Safety. In college did he not primarily play safety? He played nickel last year because we already had two starting safeties? Maybe I smoke too much weed

He played corner freshman and sophomore years - although he did move to safety some later his sophomore year to take over for Eddie Jackson after his season ended due to injury.

Junior year he played safety in base defense - which Alabama was rarely in. He rotated inside over the slot in nickel packages and "money" in dime packages. He'll play wherever the coach needs him to, but he's always preferred to play CB rather than safety if given the choice.

Instincts lol he was an all American cb his sophomore year playing cb in base and star in nickel. He was playing at a high level Eddie got hurt learned safety in a week and played for him there and everywhere rest of the season. You all need to sit back and be thankful you have a player who will do what his team & coaches need .. what his coaches ask of him is what he will do because winning is what he likes to do no db is perfect and especially not one who is expected to know several position on the fly

If they can get RESHAD back to his normal level of playing, it could be a lethal tandem

This guy is a ball hawk free safety. You need to let him roam.

I also believe letting him roam is his sweet spot.

This is a kid that can be all over the field. Why waste that shadowing 1 player?

One way or another, tell the kid what he’ll be.

Let him hone is craft.

I'm of the opinion that the Dolphins had both Tunsil and Fitzpatrick fall into their laps, couldn't pass them up, and then thoroughly botched how to handle the situation afterward. "Getting the best players on the field" sounds great in theory, but it doesn't work if you do so at the expense of team performance. Fitzpatrick should have been at FS from day one.

Dittos!

Let's not say no just yet. Reed may have been the very best, but Fitzpatrick has those same physical skills. All he lacks is the savvy veteran experience. He may or may not develop it, but he has exceptional ball skills, fantastic range, wonderful anticipation and ability to catch in traffic, sound tackling, physical presence, durability, and he is a grinder who will puts in the work to learn opposing QB's. His ceiling is extremely high. He has game-changing potential.

As a FS, he dominates the QB's decision making. It's a lot harder to avoid throwing at a FS than a CB. He single-handedly can take away seam threats, free up the defense to stop the run, allow either CB to play tight coverage as he provides a safety net, and can nearly shut down the long pass. All of that in addition to providing a last line of defense and generating takeaways, which are his primary two responsibilities. FS is a position that can have tremendous impact on a defense, and something we've sorely lacked for many years.

We see other teams do it, successfully. And here we are debating the obvious.

Kudos.

We could have had that last year by drafting Jessie Bates III in the second round, instead we drafted 2 tight ends because the one we drafted in the second cant block.

Well his college coach didn't think he was one
But his college coach was his biggest fan, and he believed Fitzpatrick would excel wherever he put him. In fact I think the name for his position in the 'Bama defense was "Star" which is more than simply a nickel back. Fitzpatrick was put there because that Alabama defense had a fierce pass rush and QB's didn't get too many deep throws. So, by putting Fitzpatrick closer to the line of scrimmage, he had a chance to impact a lot more plays.

This was all predicated on the fact that the Alabama defense had elite athletes at every position and most were two deep. There was never a hole. The defense was so dominant that safeties simply didn't get the chance to be as impactful as they do in the NFL …. not even close.

But in the NFL, safeties have a much greater impact, because no defenses are as dominant in the NFL as the Alabama defense is in college. It's a different game. I bet that if Saban were our DC and he had Fitzpatrick at the pro level, he would play him at FS.

Why wouldnt that be the case in the NFL? Only around 30% of passes are throws beyond 10 yards in the NFL. Meanwhile, Minkah made a ton of plays around or even behind the LOS last season. There are absolutetly good arguments for wanting to put him at FS, but number of opportunities isnt one of them IMO...

Those GIFs are reason why putting him deep middle will work, but why it may not be better for the defense.

There's nothing wrong with calling him a FS, and in sure he's going to dominate that spot, but he needs to be close to the LOS as much as possible
