Dolphins Sign Dwayne Allen, Formerly Of The Patriots

Gray is not on this team. Neither is Derby.
Derby and Gray were both on the team recently … not really sure whether either is on a roster anywhere now actually. Gray represents the type of role player we will likely have as a hybrid TE/FB though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him spring up again if he isn't already on another roster.

They are FAs.

Allen was brought in because they were losing the 2 vets they had on the roster.

1. Allen
2. Gesicki
3. Smythe
4. O’leary (new contract but apparantely only $100k hit to release so not safe)

Depending how Gesicki develops determines if he overtakes Allen on this list.

Miami was not trying to roll with 2 second year guys and a third year guy as the only TEs.

IMHO, you vastly undervalue Mike Gesicki. He had a good rookie season, and people are incorrectly minimizing it. This kid is going to be good.

Allen is just the type of FA we want, hard working role model for the young team. I agree that Smythe and O'Leary are at the bottom of that list, and O'Leary definitely is not safe. But somewhere, we will need a TE/FB hybrid, so _if_ O'Leary makes the team, I imagine that is the role he needs to win.

Signing a good inline TE fits with Flores stated goal to be a tough football team. None of the TE group blocked well last year. I do not know if Allen meets this mark, but the move makes sense if he does.

Whether he is gonna be good or not remains to be seen . . . .he was a weak azz specimen on the field last year who looked awkward in everything he did.

He starts the league year as the #2 behind Allen. Allen can do everything the new staff asks of him . . . .Gesicki cannot.

Well we have to find an identity on offense before we start counting snaps for TEs.

He was an adapting TE. Not many rookie TE's dominate. Keep an open mind, because just like everyone was writing off Xavien Howard and I was leading the bandwagon, I'm equally high on Mike Gesicki. The kid has the makings of a star, he is going to be good. We've already seen the flashes … but yes, he also did look like a rookie from time to time. I think you are going to change your opinion in time.

I have nothing against the kid.

But I basically saw an athlete with very little football ability as a rookie. Changing my opinion is very easy in this situation . . . .look like you belong on the field.

Me putting him as the #2 TE is more than fair, and its solely because of upside as a receiving threat.

And I am always here and I don’t remember “everybody” writing off Xavian Howard. He was hurt most of his rookie season but he definitely flashed and then came of age towards the latter half of his sophomore season. You are making it sound like we treated him like Ryan Tannehill after 7 seasons and u were the guy sticking with him and he proved everybody wrong in season 8.

Everyone talked him up as the best blocking TE in the draft and they kept talking about it during preseason until we all saw what we saw, just like I've posted it takes most rooks a few years to figure their niche out.
He was also a natural gifted savvy receiver imo at Clemson..I truly don’t know what happened, was way off on him projecting him.

It’s almost bizarre to me the 180 that is Dwayne Allen..

DJ, I dont think you are way off on him. He was drafted a tad high imho, but he lacks foot speed which can be problematic for young TEs, to me he seems like a younger Fasano who will add strength in time and develop the awareness that takes most rookies 2 to 3 years to become the talent/professional he will be.

I think he will become a solid #2 or #3 TE in this league with his niche as a blocking TE who can make schemes open catches. He just needs to put in the work and let refinement process take place. But at this time, atleast last season he was a bit slow and overwhelmed, which isnt unusual.

I’m just really happy and hoping I never see Gesicki line up next to a tackle again..Gase using him more there than any tight end in the game relative to rep count is about the dumbest professional decision I’ve seen..

You don’t try to have him learn on the job in live action, too many livelihoods at stake..

Your probably right, lack of foot speed, 7.12 in the cone, 4.75 forty..

It’s just the extreme Lack of production that perplexes me..Did he have hip replacement surgery on both hips or something.

Given the roster and the long term plan, not a move I would make.
