Dolphins And Jets In For Trey Flowers - Signed By Lions

maybe not at first. cap stuff can be back loaded, but at the end of the day it would hurt who ever signs him the last couple of years of the contract. that guaranteed money will eventually hurt the cap. look at Pittsburg with ABs contract and us with ryan and suhs contracts

The thing is the cap goes up every year and good personnel executives can manage that. We signed a big name FA every season for a few years when Dawn Aponte was here and we were never in cap trouble. That started when T-Baum took over and would restructure everything he could see. If you trust your cap people, this isn’t even a thing worth worrying about.

If I see 5 years / 80 million flash across the screen for Flowers today signing with Miami . . . .I will be happy about it. Think its a great fit and likely dumping Quinn, Wake, Branch and Hayes . . . .we need a really good DE in the mix.

If I see it for the Jets, That will be fine as well.

But I am not against us bringing Flowers here, just not desperate to have him. If I had my choice, I would love him on the team . . . .but the QB position continues to be my main focus so its hard to fully love anything else just yet.

Maybe 5 years ago. $17 million is now a standard for the above average to just under elite players hitting UFA at most non QB positions. Elite non QBs are making from 17 to 20 million.

QB money is now $25+ million.

Well, he’s not elite. So those numbers are ridiculous

Hope that doesn't stop the Fins FO from driving up the price the jests pay on him.

I don't quite believe that for a great player. If we remove ourselves from consideration, there is always a team lurking that can legitimately help establish true market value for a player.

It's not like teams just happen to realize a player is a free agent and decide to pursue. Every decent team has a complete understanding of future markets and plan accordingly.

If the Jets are the only real suitor, then Flowers is not worth the money to begin with.

I like the idea of Flowers. But this is another Suh moment for us. Walk away.

If he wants to come here, then let's see some understanding in the contract money that represents he will trade off AAV for guaranteed money.

We don't need another non-QB dictating our team's salary cap again.

We have to stop "needing" players so much that we force ourselves to pay big money in the wrong moments for players we haven't grown.

This is not the play here.

If we are paying big money, it needs to go to X or LT. NO ONE ELSE.

It is time to do things differently.

Amen brother.
I would be completely happy if we signed zero big name players the next year or two. I’m fully on board for a reset this year and a rebuild next year. Tough to do if you have massive contracts on the books.

you are right but at the end of a lot of the big contracts is where you start to get in trouble

I don’t think we go there. Flores knows the scheme was a larger factor than Flowers talent. This will be a massive FA overpay for somebody.

Did Flores say that or are you speaking for him?

I would say if he signs him it will speaks volumes about his opinion.

I have no problem with getting young premier talent... we may well have to trade up to get our QB and so this move would ease the pain of the cost of getting our QB.

He wants to come here and is a perfect fit. but he will ask more than we are willing to pay and although I would love to have him, I bet a guy JUST LIKE FLORES identified him and then he was snatched in the 4th round.
