Flawed Logic Of Tanking

I don't see how anyone could oppose the logic of "tanking", or whatever term you'd like to use. In this league you win by either having an elite QB or by building a team around an average one on a rookie contract. The best way to get either is by picking near the top of the draft.

As flawed as the Browns' process and as inept a coach as Jackson was they're now sitting pretty with what appears to be a franchise QB in the making and oodles of cap space to throw at established vets. I do believe there is something to the whole culture argument but in the NFL that is built more through a coaching staff and organization than players. These days its pretty standard to have half your roster gone every year and the average time a player stays on a single team is less than a couple seasons. Is anyone still complaining about the culture in Cleveland now that they're throwing cash around? Add in Miami's built in geographic advantages and its pretty easy to forget the past.

Even if Tua turns out to be more like Winston or Goff than Luck or Mayfield he or whoever emerges as the premier passer coming out of college this year should give a team a chance to build a contender.

Because there is "No Logic" to think tanking is like flipping a light switch.

If you want to feel good about thinking we're tanking.....go for it.

I believe tanking worked for the Houston Astros.

Ironically they may have done a ton of damage to baseball. Teams that have no intention of bettering themselves can now point to the Astros and say that's what their approach is, when in reality their objective is to keep cost low and collect revenue sharing. That's what the Marlins are doing.

Thing is, I don't think you make any kind of assessment on your coaches next year based on record. They all understand this a 3-5 year plan to rebuild and try to build a team that competes. If you give them a bad roster, mediocre QB - or both - they're not going to win any football games. Doesn't matter how good they are as coaches or how many rings they bring with 'em.

Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 his first year with the Cowboys. Belichick went 5-11 his first year in New England. Pete Carroll started off with two consecutive losing seasons in Seattle.

The examples like this are too many to list, but when you're taking over a team that's tearing down their roster - losing is part of the plan. The extent of the roster teardown determines the extent of the losing you're going to experience. There are no shortcuts to building a successful football team. But turnarounds can happen quickly in the NFL if you do it right. I mean true turnarounds. Not just a better record.

You just have to determine what your particular team's "bottom" is and get there fast so you can rebuild correctly. Not every situation is the same. Not every "bottom" is the same, and not every losing season is the same.

Just because you win more games doesn't mean you turned it around. Just because you're losing more games, doesn't mean you're not on the right track and staying the course.

I'll guarantee you Belichick pulled him aside and told him that.

It shouldn't take 4-5 seasons to compete again. If we have the right guys running the show we should have a good idea where we stand by the end of the third, if not second, season.

"rebuilding" and "tanking" are the same thing... Even if they aren't actively trying to lose, the way this roster is constructed right now its a guarantee to have a Top 5 pick next year...

Yeah, sure they are same.

That's why you slipped in even if they aren't trying to lose.

Tanking is intentionally losing period. AKA going through the motions.

The other is naturally rebuilding an NFL team due to years and years of using a band aid on a gun shot wound.

Contact Webster is you need them changed in the dictionary for your liking.

It’s all about what the circumstances are and when you do it. There is no QB reasonably available right now that makes this team competitive in the short run or the long run, and there are no other bundle of players at other positions. Next year they say is a bumper crop of QBs in the draft. If you have a bad QB especially with this supporting cast you’re assured to get one of them, and a 50/50 shot of getting the best one, which is very good odds when you think about it.

The worst thing is to be one of those zombie franchises that sputters in mediocrity, which is what the Dolphins have been not for lack of trying not to be.

It’s time to rip off the bandaid.

How are they keeping costs down paying Verlander $28 million a season!!! lol They have the tenth highest payroll in the MLB this year!!! They tanked, so did the Braves. The MLB average payroll is $127 million with 4 teams spending less than half that: Marlins, Orioles Pirates and Rays. They will all be relevant in the future, it's just going to take time. The Braves are a team just coming out of their tank and are now starting to spend again. It's painful and you may lose fans but it works!!

This team havent been a QB away from being good since noodle arm Pennington. The problem with the Dolphins has been they have not been able to build a roster. The Defense has been horrible for years. The offense in general outside of the QB has been horrible for years. The past 8 years of management the phins would of lost the same amount of games with Andrew Luck. This is not the NBA where one player can make that much of a difference.

The only real strategy i think the Phins might be trying to do. Get a qb on a cheap rookie contract and then spend a lot of money in free agency while his deal is low. Like the Browns are trying to do. But that is a real gamble. No one knows how fast a qb will develop.

They passed on Wentz, and Mahomes, and Watson. They wasted two years. They ended up with #1 pick not because they wanted to but because they were run by idiots. In what world is that good?

In the world where your starting QB is Baker Mayfield? Its the ultimate panacea. The Colts may have had the worst front office in the league for years and most Dolphin fans would be thrilled to be in their position simply because of the man behind center. The Browns made all sorts of mistakes as you doled out and yet here they are with a fanbase dreaming of contending for years to come.

In the NFL that is the opportunity having that first overall pick presents you with. The Dolphins have been a horribly run franchise for decades now and yet one season of misery can offer a fanbase a decade of hope. I'll admit that there is no guarantee than any college prospect emerges this year as a cant miss franchise signal caller and it is possible that they still manage to screw it up if given the opportunity. But the odds are in their favor.

Yeah because the SEC is a cupcake schedule and all Saban's QBs have thrown for 46 TDs in like 45 quarters of football. Good post.
LSU and maybe Auburn last year. Fresno, Colorado State, Citadel, Vanderbilt, a weak FSU, Mercer, Duke, Arkansas. = Cupcakes.

Can we open a tanking forum and the mods can move all tanking threads there. I think it will be helpful when the season starts and posters get pissed when we win games.

Haha umm Fresno state was 12-2 and won the mountain west. but they didn't play Fresno. Or vandy or FSU or Duke. They did play Mississippi State. A&M. Missouri. Oklahoma. Georgia.

Ultimate panacea is Baker Mayfield?!? In what world does it matter whether it is Wentz, Mahomes, or Mayfield?
You go get an elite QB and you roll, it does not matter which one!

The Browns luck turned when they hired a GM who gets it and gets sht done! Not with Baker Mayfield!

You can give the number 1 pick to Ireland and he will select a LT! You can give it to Sashi and he will turn down Mahomes for more picks, because he likes to fk around! Just like our idiot GM! If you gave our GM or the Jets the #1 pick, they wouldn't know what to do with it. They'd pick Darnold!

This team needs a GM who get it, and gets things done. Not make believe GM who is only good for answering phones. That's his mental domain.
