Trade Out Of First Round

I’m totally fine with this. Considering the qb of our future is not on the current roster, and there likely won’t be a viable option at qb at pick 13, I’d love for us to focus on the defensive line since there’s so much depth at that position this year, and focus on getting our future qb/the OL to protect him in 2020

I wouldn't bet on it.
We don't even know what that list will look like in two weeks.

I used to be a fan of trading back and accumulating picks.

Then I realize over time that if you don't hit on your 1st and 2nd round picks, your team spirals slowly likely a slow flushing toilet.

Don't get me wrong, you need to hit everywhere in the draft. You need good player development that can make those late round picks and UDFA's turn into excellent values.

But if you don't hit on your elite picks, your team misses that opportunity to put a true difference maker on the field. You need players who can elevate your scheme, coaching and players around him.

They don't have to be at premium positions to create uniqueness in your diversity. In fact, a generational or elite caliber talent at any position can change your entire team's chemistry and fortunes.

So, under valuing your own ability to correctly identify and pick elite talent tends to take away from the true potential of your organization to be elite.

Even in a rebuild, you need cornerstones.

Trading out of the 1st to gather picks is same thing as saying Tunsil and Minkah aren't key cogs in our future.

They are and will be. We need just as many cogs as we do role players. The more you hit on your 1sts, the more weaknesses you conceal and strengths create.

We need more elite players that we have drafted.

I like all of this and especially this part: Don't get me wrong, you need to hit everywhere in the draft. You need good player development that can make those late round picks and UDFA's turn into excellent values.

As far as I'm concerned you are preaching to the choir.

Totally in favor of moving down unless we're going QB now, or one of the blue chip defensive players are on the board at 13 (I'm talking Ed Oliver or Devin White level guys).

I think guys like Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Deandre Baker, & a couple of the OL like Lindstrom can be had in the 20s. Since we are basically redshirting the season as a team, I'd be okay with targeting a redshirt (Jeffrey Simmons) in a trade down as well.

If we're moving down then the priority should absolutely be acquiring 2020 draft capital. Trading out of the first round entirely should land us a 2020 1 & more.

Depending on who's available at 13 I wouldn't mind trading back, but not out of the first. Trade back into the late teens or 20s and pick up an extra pick or 2 this year or next and draft a guy like Bradbury.

Nope.
Trade this years 1st pick to be in position to go after the QB in 2020.
Trade back 2nd and 3rd round to accumulate another pick or two.
Build the oline with road graters with mid round picks.
Find a edge rusher and a couple DTs
That should be the focus this year.
It is a 2 year plan

20 years of looking for a QB and we got a shot at these three ...lol ya lets move back....

We need more than anything a QB and I'd be shocked if our guys are not peeing in their pants to getting one of these guys...
We haven't been is such a good position with this kind of QB value in a long time and I really doubt our guys are not More than aware of the shot we have with one of these guys and if super lucky Murray...

I mean IMO you can take that to the bank.... All these silly ideas of moving back or picking another position when 3 top shelf QB's are there for the taking....
We will be moving, yes but not back....
and then adding the right players around that guy ...you'll see...

I mean I'd be surprised as hell if they didn't and think like all the FO changes were for naught...You may not like one of those guys and feel he's not the best in the world but anyone of those 3 is a no brainer to go after...and we are lucky as H now to have the shot we have...JMO

I think they would've done a better job w the oline in FA if we were picking a QB this draft

That makes sense and I am a huge upgrade the OL fan. But this organization at least for me feel they do have a plan and I don't think they've shown enough to judge anything yet.
But Iam beginning to think they see the value in Murray Lock and Haskins that they will not pass by and in another 6 weeks one of em will be a Miami Dolphin.... Would love to see OL help but think and giving blind credit that they will bolster the OL somewhat and maybe knowing the QB and his style of play helping to influence their future pick ups.... But beginning to feel very confident that one of those guys will be here cause I don't think we are that old Dolphin clueless consciousness any more.

The more aggressive you are trying to trade out the more apt you are to cut a bad deal. Let it play out. If there is a good trade partner for good value, ya trade out. However you also have to weigh out the value of who is still on the board at 13. If another Tunsil or Fitz is sitting there, you have to put that into the equation, is passing on a potential pro bowler worth the value of the draft pics gained on a trade out.

I agree with you. Our front office needs to be fluid and flexible and well versed on the draft prospects. If a prized player falls into our lap, it could be an option to trade down if someone wants that player bad enough or we grab him and place a check in the box for one of many needed players. When you go into the draft saying you have to trade down or up, you are tipping your hand and giving away leverage. For our team, I do not see any player on the board who is worth trading up for. Even the quarterbacks in the 2019 draft. 2020, well that is another discussion for this time next year.

Interesting. I haven't looked ahead much to the 2020 draft. Is it considered a better draft than 2019? I know it is at the quarterback position so in that sense loading up picks to ensure a top qb makes sense.

If you consciously decide to trade back(which I am gonna guess GMs never do because they work in the real world), you probably would do it at a discount
