Slimm, Ck And J-off-her-doll, 2019 Qb's Versus 2020 Qb's

With respect to Martell's accuracy are you talking about in practice?

Because in games, 23 of 28, couldn't have been all that bad right?

Yeah just going by what I’ve heard from practice from CBUS press. It might be unfair because he’s got to deal with Bosa and Chase Young in practice. Also just because a ball is complete I don’t consider it an accurate throw.

How would the board/fans react if Miami drafted Ryan Finley in the 3rd round this year?

Ehlinger is just a rugged, tough, physical football player. Strong. Likes to run to contact, which he’ll have to curb in order to transition to the next level. I’m a big fan of the style of offense he plays in - at least for the Big-12 - but not a fan of how it translates to the next level.

He’s got some Tebow in him. His teammates feed off his spirit and competitiveness. He resembles a mini-Tebow running that veer and read option.

He generally makes good decisions with the football. Shows the ability to make throws into tight windows.

The issues for Ehlinger in my opinion are that he’s a little clunky mechanically and has some overstride tendencies in his footwork. The ball comes out of his hand nose down a lot. His delivery is really over the top.

Doesn’t really like to progress beyond his first read. He’d rather pull it down and run than go to his second read. Often leaves the pocket prematurely and misses his open outlet or checkdown option. Can hold the ball too long and take sacks in bunches.

Performance falls off when blitzed or has rushers in his face. Can drop his eye level in these situations.

Overall he has nice physical tools and plenty of athleticism and strength for a quarterback. However, still needs to develop cleaner mechanics and grow up as a true pocket passer.

I think I have him as my #5 underclassman quarterback heading into the spring. Mid-round prospect at this point.

IDK, for as hyped as he was I was a bit disappointed. Character wise I thought he was really impressive for a young guy and he always said the right things to the media. Easily as competitive as Mayfield. Students and players LOVE Martel.

What puzzled me was how accurate he was when throwing off balance or on the run but then when he set his feet and had all day to throw he couldn’t hit anything. I don’t think this bothered Urban at all because in his offense Martell would probably get 100 yards rushing. I got the feeling it drove Ryan Day nuts. Day basically wouldn’t even let Tate compete. Day had Matt Baldwin ( future transfer portal guy) above Martell. Baldwin is a stud BTW, 3 star, and he’s giving Fields all he wants in Spring practice.
So I’m still a huge Martel fan and will watch every game, but something needs fixed. All these OSU transfer QB’s are really messing with my Saturday schedule. Now I’ve got to watch Ohio State, LSU, and hopefully Miami if Tate gets cleared.

I'm an avid HS fan and watched Tate Martell quite a bit while at Bishop Gorman. If not for his size, he'd have been a much bigger recruit than he was -- even though he was still highly recruited and ended up at my tOSU. You're spot on that Martell is certainly more in the Urban Meyer mold of QB's. I'm sure Day and Kevin Wilson were the reason he sat behind Haskins -- along with Haskins being pretty darn good himself -- as they both prefer a more prototypical pocket passing QB.

I'm mixed on what I've seen regarding Martell's maturity in HS and at tOSU. He comes from a well off family and is a bit entitled. But I love his moxie and confidence. I'm thoroughly disappointed in his decision to transfer w/o giving Fields a fight for the job. After all the talking he did and trying to steer Fields away from tOSU by claiming he would beat him out, he bailed pretty darn quickly. I see that as a red flag. Part of the entitlement. I get believing he knows the system better and has a leg up based upon experience in practice -- but he still has to earn the job. Unless he was flat out told by Day/Wilson that he has no shot, I just don't understand or respect his decision to leave w/o fighting it out in camp. But perhaps that's just me.

That all said, the kid has a ton of talent. He arguably had just as impressive of a HS career as Kyler Murray. At least one National QB guru went on record saying that he believes Tate can make all the throws and can be a star at the collegiate level. I won't be surprised at all if he stars at the U. But his reluctance to compete with Fields because he and his family felt he was already entitled to the job is something that irks me and is something I think scouts will remember come draft time.

I’m fairly certain Day told Tate it’s between Baldwin and Fields. He wasn’t even given a chance. I don’t think you’ll see another QB under 6’2” and not accurate recruited by Ohio State again as long as Day is coach. Day and Hartline are trying to make Ohio State QBU. Watch some YouTube on next year’s prize recruit Jack Miller. He reminds me of the good Carson Palmer.

Hey CK and Ted. I haven't posted in a while. Needed the tanny craze to settle down. I follow you both and love the analysis. Even thou I don't agree all the time - respect. I will admit i am a wvu alum. That said i think will grier is the most over looked in this class. I think we should make a move in the 3rd for him. I think he is going to surprise the nfl.
