Have Our Rebuild Plans Shifted?

You do realize that your case for elite pretty much falls apart as soon as you add: has been riding the pine and available for a 3rd, no matter how many explanation points you use.

Unless you think Ben is in a class above elite, then you're suggesting the steelers don't know what they have and are idiots. Let's look at this one more way: A 3rd this year and a 4th next year might move us up from the 13th to 12th pick of the draft, yet you have an elite grade on a 3rd rounder that not one team has tried to trade for and the steelers are willing to walk away from for what would move them up 1 or 2 picks in the draft.

I'm starting to believe that you and the rest of the world think *elite* QB means something very different.
yall both are right. it doesn't matter because Big Ben is one of top qb in NFL. so what does that mean for Mason Rudolph. he is going be on bench for while. does he know that yes. does that help him no. I want dolphins to draft him last yr. we all no how that went. Mason Rudolph chance of being start in nfl is probably slim being behind big ben. one thing big ben didn't like steelers drafting Mason Rudolph.. they may not be getting along on team. that may be reason why steelers are trying trade him.

With a new regime here in Miami we know that the rebuild is in full effect, but it’s been difficult understanding what Miami’s short term plan is.

For example, reports suggested we were in on Trey Flowers, in on Juwan James, and in on the Pierre Desir. This gives off the vibe that tanking is/was not the objective from the onset and while compensatory picks are all the rage now, they didn’t appear to be a part of our short term plans.

This begs the question surrounding our QB situation and whether we draft a QB in 2019 or 2020. It just seems hard to believe that we were prepared to spend money and compete while waiting on QB until 2020 where you certainly want to have a top 5 selection.

It’s for these reasons I believe we have a QB target in this draft, but it’s hard to see this regime relinquishing valuable 2020 draft capital to move up and grab Haskins or Murray.
You probably shouldn't believe 'reports' and it's hard to judge of our stance has changed when nobody really knew what it was in the first place. If it's fair to surmise your point as 'we must be drafting a QB this year as we were prepared to spend big in FA, and spending big in FA wouldn't make sense if we weren't drafting a QB' then that's quite an assumption based on not much evidence.

As usual the reality probably lies somewhere in between the extremes that are generally put forward; the approach is probably fluid to be able to react to events of and around the next two drafts, we aren't 'tanking' with the sole aim of getting a #1 pick, we're happy to spend money on FAs if it offers value (which spending money on high price FAs rarely does) because this is a long term plan to make the team competitive (not just to get the #'1 pick) but we're happy to wait for the FAs because not much is expected this year.

I'm not saying you are making this point but far too much is made of 'if we're too successful this year then the plan won't work' - getting Trey Flowers or re-signing James on good value deals wouldn't affect the plan because the plan is to get good players on good value contracts to make the team successful. Doing so this year wouldn't have meant that we aren't rebuilding or waiting until 2020 to draft a QB.

Ultimately nobody really knows what the plan is, and even if they did that plan could easily change on draft night. I just think that if they were planning on drafting a QB in the first this year they would have made more of an effort to give that QB better tools other than just making competitive (ie cheap) offers to Flowers and James.

Mason Rudolph is not good, he is elite. That's all we need, an elite young quarterback, it does not matter which one.
Why would the Steelers trade him? Because they are in a win now mode.

To say Mason Rudolph is elite is funny. There in win now mode? The Steelers are in a position to make the playoffs almost every year, to have a chance at competing for a super bowl. It’s probably an extreme disappointment to their fans when they don’t make the playoffs where as we have people (fans) on here talking about how they think our front office has to find a QB to lead us to a Super Bowl!!! How about building a team that can make the playoffs consistently before finding a Qb that the front office thinks can take us to a super bowl with the lack of talent assembled currently on this roster. The Steelers are not in win now mode because they draft well every year and have a very good coaching staff. They lose AB and have Smith-Schuster, they lose Bell and have Connor. They have one of the better offensive lines in th NFL. There is no pressure for them to win now. It takes more than an elite quarterback to win a Super Bowl. We had Marino, one of the greatest quarterbacks in the 80’s and 90’s to play, did we win a super bowl?

It won’t be as bad as it looks. I get a laugh out of people freaking out about our lines. Nothing has ever been settled in March we should know this from being the free agent champion year after year while the Patriots sit back. There will be adds. I don’t think we’ll be great, nobody wants that anyway, but I still think it will take the wheels falling off injury wise to land the 1st overall pick. Nothing is ever as it seems in NFL football outside of the Patriots being good.

I get a chuckle out of this post. You start off your post saying it won’t be as bad as it looks and that you get a chuckle out of people freaking out about our annually porous line we run out there. Then you don’t think we’re done making moves and after we do you don’t think we will be great, you don’t say. Then you top it off by calling the greatest team this decade “good”. How about talking those rose colored glasses off and objectively analyzing our teams current situation?

Maybe because you misinterpreted it. I meant I get a chuckle about people freaking out about the states of the line right now in 2019. I realize we have rolled out some poor lines over the years but this is a new regime and I don't believe anything is settled on March 21st so I wouldn't freak out yet. Of course I don't think we will be GREAT but I don't think we'll be the train wreck everybody is predicting either. I'm sorry I used the wrong adjective to describe the Patriots, the point is them being FANTASIC is about the only surety that exists coming into an NFL season. Nothing else is usually as it seems. Meaning right now it looks like we are the favorites to the #1 overall pick so it likely isn't going to happen.

I love this last line the most, like my post was over the top optimistic lol. We're probably a 5 to 7 win team even after bringing in lineman. My point is just I don't think we're a shoe in 1 or 2 win team because hopefully coaching, scheming, discipline, fundamentals and toughness will all be improved under the new coaching. If it isn't then the new coaching staff sucks because these things really weren't great under the last one.

Wait, what?

Wait, what?

In 2019! I guess there would never be anything wrong with being great but knowing this place posters would be pissed because they would never believe Ryan Fitzpatrick could maintain that and how could you blame them. The prize everybody's eye is on right now is a rookie QB.

I don't think we should move up unless were dying for the player and he better be a QB. Short of that we should play it just like we did last year and let the draft come to us. There's no way to handicap the draft with any certainty so hold your water, don't start falling into old habits and see who's sitting there at 13. Also, see who's on the telephone looking to move up. Then, based on the facts, do what's best for the Miami Dolphins.

I am not sure if our plans have changed. Everything being said from the Dolphins was: rebuilding while remaining competitive. Everybody knows that QB is #1 priority. That will remain.
Dolphins are in a unique position to either target a QB this year or next year. If the price to move up is too high or their identified QB is gone this year they will try next year.
I'd be very very happy with Haskins this year.

Someone mentioned Mason Rudolph. He is a QB I wish we would have drafted last year. He was a project for a couple years but will become a great QB. We picked 3 spots before the Steelers and missed out on him.
I have not heard that the Steelers are shopping him. If they do it is probably not a knock on Rudolph so much but more that Rothlisberger will play longer and will be longer with the Steelers than anybody thought (1-2 years).
If the Dolphins get a chance to pick him up for a 3rd and 4th it is a win-win. The Steelers drafted him with a 3rd and get one additional pick and we will have possibly our future QB.

It's still wait and see for me. this teams is notorious for going off the rails. look at 2016, the teams wasn't good but we found a way in the playoffs. That next year Gase and co. are talking super bowl. What preceded next was total malpractice by Mike T.

I'm interested to see if they adapt the Patriots cap structure. There are about 28 teams who still can't figure out how to use the cap (even the phins). I pray for the day we can figure it out. The rams had tons of star power last year and still couldn't get it done.
Oh you get your first ballot HOF QB to spurn the Union and take half even a third of what he is worth and then you put that money into Gilmore - let us see how many star players will take 1/3 to 1/2 of their salary???

You do realize what Thill was being paid and Brady was being paid right?
