The Wrong Te

I thought it was common knowledge that TEs usually blossom around year 2 or 3? It's one of the more difficult positions for a rookie to learn.

It is, but right now it's the trend to **** all over him because he wasn't immediately dominant. He's not Gronk right now, so he sucks, he's a baby giraffe, a ballerina on roller skates or whatever stupid analogy these nice gentlemen and women would like to assign to him. Now that Tannehill is gone, he's the new scapegoat.

Why don't we look at the good instead of the bad. Tell me he doesn't look fast and fluid when he catches the ball. Watch him beat a LB and a DB up the seam. Tell me there's a LB that can cover him man to man if you drag him across the middle.

So, zone coverage? Get him vertical over the middle. Man coverage, drag him. You do this and the defense starts to respect him, you open up for Edelman space passes that can net 5-7 yards.

And never, ever have him block. Teach him to chip, one quick punch, and get moving. Want blocking? Bring in one of the other 5 or whatever number it is of TEs to do that. Check in another lineman as a TE in goaline situations. Do whatever as long as you.dont.ask.him.to.do.what.he.is.not.good.at.

He's not physical. He may never be. Who knows? Weight room, coaching and experience might change that. It might not so as much as he should be able to out reach-over/muscle a DB on a jump ball, don't ask him to do so if he can't.

We all know that Gase would regularly and inexplicably go away from what was working. I'd pay money to take a stroll through that guy's brain. Gore is falling for 4 yards a carry and your go-to is shotgun on 3rd and 1s.

How can you possibly judge Gesicki after one year on an offense like that? Judge him on his blocking all day. He earned that.

I'm sure if there were highlights of him getting bullied it would have more footage than below. But he's here now. Use him for what he can do. Get him running forward off of the snap and use his speed rather than toughness which he is obviously lacking.

While I agree and get your point.....at the same time some players get too many years(Tannehill) and the benefit of the doubt for way too long.

True! But let's focus on this particular player and the fact that the OP made a thread calling him a bust and the next guy(also only played 1 year) practically the next Gronk.

What worries me about Gesicki, the coaches are from New England where they had Gronk, Gesicki is nothing like Gronk. One is the most physical TE in this generation and One cant block at all.

I doubt Gesicki sees much playing time next year. Unless hes gained 25 pounds and learned to block.

The hope is with the staff being from NE, they use Gesicki more like they used Hernandez than Gronk

Can you honestly find a situation where a top 50 TE, with absolutely nobody of relevance on the roster at TE, produces so little as a receiver and is so overmatched as a blocker?

Year 2 or 3 guys blossom because teams get rid of the dependable veterans that are set for a contract and roll with the highly selected rookie that is set to take off.

Even a widely considered early years bust like Eric Ebron, a guy that took a few years to really blossom, managed better receiving numbers than Gesicki as a rookie . . . And even he had a 28 year old veteran top 20 pick on the roster at the time and didn’t play in 3 games.

Guys drafted this high bite more than Gesicki did as rookie, considering his wide open opportunity, whether as a pass catcher or as a blocker.

So yea it is worrying. And Actions by this new staff have not been a ringing endorsement for this group of holdover tight ends. They got rid of everybody that was eligible to be gotten rid of and brought in two journeymen almost immediately in free agency. I can imagine they watched 16 games of film and the TE play popped off the screen as something that needed immediate attention.

Improvement from Gesicki can be made but there definitely seems to be a difference between Gesicki and other late bloomers. Late bloomers tend to struggle with assignments, drops, opportunities, etc. . . . Gesicki knew his assignments and he has good hands and he was the default #1 . . . . He was just always overpowered, knocked backwards, off balanced . . . Quite often with guys he should more than handle. On receiving opportunities an early jam and its over. Hell I’d rather Jakeem Grant on a fade because I know despite his height, he’ll likely make the defender miss the jam and blow by him for the catch.

He needs a ton of work. He is a speciality player right now and he may always be that . . . Which sucks because they had a 3 down NFL ready TE just sitting there in Goedert that was very athletic in his own right.

Hopefully the new coaching staff has a better plan for Gesicki than the last one did but Mike has to meet them half way with a major offseason.

Well I don't know about you guys but I really thought Tom Brady was a generational player when he entered the 2000 draft.

Still weird everyone are obsessed with Dallas Goedert.

Mark Andrews was the best rookie TE in the NFL last year and he was the best TE prospect in the draft.

Andrews went like 40 some odd picks later while these 2 were always going to be the vs. comparison people make early in their careers, and many people wanted Goedert over Gesicki so it adds fuel to the fire.

As will Minkah and Derwin (that one doesn’t get as much pub because Minkah actually had a really good rookie season, even if Derwin got more accolades).

I agree that Gesicki does deserve more time, and a new coaching staff may help. I also agree with focusing on his strengths. Still, if he cannot block, his snaps at the position will remain limited and designing useful plays with him may require a two tight end set. I was hoping to see aggressiveness and isolation at the top of the catch, decent route running, or at least a mismatch against LB’s, but saw none of that last year, or it was so infrequent I simply can’t remember it. Unfortunately, he will need to shine in at least one of those areas this year or he may find himself a bench fixture.
