Quinn To Be A Cowboy Soon??

Not a bad idea to get picks, but getting a bunch of 4th and 5ths, 6ths.....who is to say those players will be any good? A bunch of 2nd and 3rds? Sure.

They are great for targeting guys in those first 3 rounds.

Chris Grier was a driving force in selecting Xavian Howard in 2016. We traded up and used a 4th to do it.

We may be in a position in 2020 where we need to use a good portion of our early picks to nab a QB, so having these mid round picks allow you to target guys instead of just sitting on your hands because you have no assets to make moves.

Its less about the player and more about gaining leverage to get the player you want.

Draft picks are like scratch off tickets. Your odds of winning the lottery are higher with 1st Rd picks, but if you have a lot of 5+ also you give yourself more chances to get a stud somewhere in that mix .

In what world? Clowney is getting 16 mil this year and had 9 sacks. Flowers got 28.5 mil cash, and 18 mil salary per year, and had 7.5 sacks. Jerry Hughes had 7 sacks and is making 12 mil. Robert Quinn is 28, had 6.5 sacks making 12 mil.
Zadarius Smith, 9 sacks, average salary 16.5 milion.

I'll tell you in what world. In the world of scheme fits and other BS.
You know, there have been a number of studies done that state that a consensus, of a large number of people is more likely to be right than the opinion of an expert. Look them up.

Now, look back through this, and the other Quinn thread. You'll see the consensus is that this is a good deal. You're basically standing alone on this one.

You get your stars in the first and 2nd round but in order to build a winning team you need those picks in the mid to late rounds to get your depth. If you draft smart you can get good players on day 3. Every pick can turn into a very good player.

If I'm the Dolphins, I'd be willing to eat his salary this year for a higher pick. We don't need the cap space. Even if for a late rounder, I'm glad we got something. He wasn't awful, but I forgot he was even playing most of the time. The pass rush was non existent and they couldn't stop the run to save their lives. He wasn't worth the money. The DEs were awful and he couldn't even stand out. Perhaps he will do better with Dallas.

In theory, people against this type of move would be against it because it you can roll over the cap amount and add to your free space the following year.

But i think that sort of “fools gold” you as a team and you have to be real careful how you manage yourself in the coming years as you can find yourself back in cap hell.

Getting a cheap 4 year rookie contract, a successful one, is severly more valuable than $5 million on Tannehill or Quinn for the current season.

Anything you find in free agency worth a damn is going to cost you 7-8 million minimum.

Hell Billy Turner just got a 4/28 deal. You hope as a team you can find Billy Turner production in round 4 for 4/3 million. Makes the $5 million eaten look like chump change.

Quinn on a 1 year deal at his current number makes 0 sense, outside of hoping he stays healthy, has a great year and then signs a nice deal in the offseason combined with a bunch of other factors to get you a potential comp pick that will likely be in the 2021 5th round range in a best case scenario.

If you can guarantee that now for 2020 just for eating a few million . . . .go for it and let some other young guy get experience for a season taking Quinn’s snaps, who will not be in the picture.

$12 million is a lot of money to pay him to be a mediocre football player.

That's Dallas's leverage in all this. Miami has tried to pretend they'd keep Quinn if they weren't offered a great price, but the Cowboys might have called the bluff.

I agree. But a veteran leader, with absolutely nothing on the roster in terms of even mediocre pass rush, and the contract coming off the books next year anyways, $12 mil doesnt seem outrageous to pay.

Our leverage is whatever the Saints were offering though. The bidding war aspect of this makes me think that we might have the higher ground in negotiations.

We can, after all, just balk and keep him but we all know through reports that both Dallas and NO were salivating at the chance to sign him.
