Is Ed Oliver A Fit For The New Scheme?

That was some years ago but anyway, I highly doubt any team is drafting Oliver with the intentions to make him a NT.

I hear ya and agree with your premise. I would say 99% of guys under 300lb would struggle at NT.

Originally Dallas took him as a DE in the 3-4 but an injury to Jason Big Ferguson made them try out Rat at NT. They never looked back
Just that Ratliff had that explosiveness and quickness that just gave centers fits.
Not your usual fat run plugging NT.

I could see Oliver being that type of force, if he had to play NT. He's a freak.

Ed Oliver is not a fit for any scheme. He is Dominique Easley. Too small.

Remember we had this convo because Oliver is going to be a heck of a player in the NFL.

I find it hard to believe a bottom of the league team like the Fins could complain about Oliver not being a 'fit'.

LOL. Nobody will fit this year. We’re rebuilding, trying to figure it out from scratch.

There is no foundation or scheme to fit into.

Jay Ratliff played nose for Dallas when they were 3-4 at 6'4" 287 ... but it would be a total waste to put him out of position like that. I think he could do it, though.

Best player in the draft and he's versatile ... screw the fit imo.

He could play anywhere along the line in a 4-3 or end in a 3-4 ... with some variations in between. He'd be an absolute no brainer pick.

I was just thinking of the same player when this question was asked. I also believe just saying 3-4 NT doesn't really define much as Wade Phillips used his NT as a one-gap penetrator, not just a space eater. I also agree he would be better suited at several other positions over NT but he could be used as a chess piece who occasionally lined up over center.....depending on who else you have on your line. It won't matter until they get A LOT more help. Look at Suh. He wasn't as big of an impact player when he had no help to draw double teams in the run game.

Oliver was even asked to work out at ILB & OLB so that shows what type of athlete he can be.

Oliver seems to be very disruptive but also played at NT last year. Some believe he is as twitched up as Aaron Donald but just not as strong at the POA. Can get locked on by OL'men.

Ed Oliver at 6'3 287 (4.75 40). Aaron Donald at 6'0 284 (4.68 40). Donald is obviously thicker. Look at Trey Flowers at 6'4 270 (4.93 40).

I think he could play 3T, 5T, 7T. 3-4, 4-3 you can just about put him anywhere in the front 7. Optimal position IMO would be 3 technique with a big two-gapping NT like Dexter Lawrence. That or at 5 tech with a big NT. Could also be effective at strong side DE in a 4-3 in the base and kick inside. If they want to be multiple, him and a big space eater would help a lot.

Easley had torn his acl multiple times prior to draft. His medical had more red flags than you could count

And the Pats still took him in the first. That guy's takes are so hot they might burn your dick off.

Absolutely. Move him around. Pinpoint the olineman having the most trouble blocking you and feast.

There's like a 98% chance he's gone so this is mostly academic but man is some D coordinator gonna have some fun with him.

I've heard some evaluators say Donald advantage is he is 3 inches shorter and it's easier for him to get under the pads - gain leverage and then control and dispose of the OL-man when comparing the 2, hardly ever hear being shorter is an advantage for a defensive tackle....but it makes sense.

I think he will be there when we pick, and maybe someone is willing to give us there 2nd round pick to come up and get him or highly ranked OL-man, right now with both lines depleted a move down to acquire more picks is the right move. Make Chris Grier and Marvin Allen work....use the 1st 2-2nd's and 3rd of the offensive and defense lines and start building the base.
