Locked On First Round...i Like It

Yep. I'm not missing out on a top 13 talent to move down twice for 3 round greater odds of gamble.

We most certainly could use the bodies but unless the value is great, let's go quality over quantity.

Not that we know what any of these picks are going to turn out to be but the odds of getting a stud at 13 is not worth 2 threes.

Keep in mind that talent is subjective and not always a promise of performance. There is also the potential problem of value vs. need. If we had a real good QB and a poor OL, would you feel the need to select a QB over a lineman in the first round of the draft.

When a player can play effectively at more than one position, he does have a little more value, but not as much as if he could play all those positions at the same time. When it comes to the draft, the real value of having a versatile player available when its your pick is that there are likely to be more trading partners available.

This means a versatile players' greatest value is during the draft. This is because he is desirable by a wider number of teams. Once that player has been picked, his value immediately decreases simply because he will typically play just one position most of his career while only being used occasional in other positions.

He is always more valuable because he can play other positions, but a varied skill set is most valuable during the draft. This is because there is likely to be a wider base of interested teams due to his varied skill sets.

Assuming the case for an offensive lineman that can play guard, tackle and center. He would be attractive to teams that need a guard or a tackle or a center or any combination of those positions. This would imply that there would be 3 times as many teams interested in trading a draft position to be able to get him as opposed to being skilled at just one of those positions.

In our situation the question is:

Can we improve the team more by getting two potentially good draft picks as opposed to one very promising draft pick with higher expectations?

With a new coaching staff and our release of some big contract players, I feel increasing the number of draft picks at this time is the better choice.
some good points there Ray.

:eyepop: Wha???

You mean like a C playing G and T at the SAME TIME!?

Could be revolutionary!

I think we definitely get a 2nd from Houston, especially since they have 2.

Minnesota from 18 to 13 I could see us also getting like a 2020 4

I like Risner, though I think we will probably put him at G and let him be a pro-bowler there. Excited to move over to the rest of the draft.

At 13 there are great players still on the board. And some of those players are coveted by some teams with multi picks!! At 13 nothing should even get a glimpse without the teams 2020 1st round pic at the starting point.

Swap 1st rounders.
Finz get 2020 1st round pic
Some further compensation including 2019 pics that include nothing less than 2, 3, 4 round choices or a player, pics and player, etc.... . But a trade from #13 has to have somebody's 2020 1st round or a teams extra 2019 1st and further package that includes a few pics made up of some combo that includes 2, 3rd and 4th rounders. Thats bare minimum. A bunch of 6th and future 5ths doesnt cut it. 13 is still a prime pic especially with all the blue chip defensive players who will still be on the board and there WILL be teams or a team who covet one of those and has the draft capitol to make a big trade.

Are you saying some team will swap R1s with us in this draft

and also fork over their 2020 R1 AND include some R2, R3

and/or R4 ammo in this draft????

Because I absolutely cannot imagine us just giving up this years R1

for another teams R1 2020 (which could be like pick #32)!

We could just trade our R2 this year for an R1 next.

What's your objective?

Who are the picks? I don’t really want to listen to the podcast.
Too bad, it's a top notch podcast. You should give it a try. I haven't heard another that is even close to the Locked on Phins podcast.

Who was available at 13 when they made the trade? Regardless, 3rd round picks isn’t good value at all (preemptively disregarding trade value charts). If I’m moving out of range for the top ten level talent that will certainly drop to 13 with the rise of QBs and reaches, I want a 1st next year. Nothing else. And even that’s completely contingent upon who is a available at 13.

I had read about the talent levels in the drafts being historically about even through the 1st 20 picks. This evaluation covered a decade or more of picks. Note, this was based on actual picks, not presumed favorites or general standings prior to the draft.

If this article was correct, then who ever is picked at 13, QB or other position, has a probability of being more successful then a second or third round draft pick and an equal probability of being as good as any of the other first twenty picks..

Also note: There are plenty of misses in the first 20 picks of the draft, just fewer misses then at lower picks.

Feel like teams are gonna trade in front of us. Not trade with us. Most trade ups are for QBs. Most would see us as competition for that QB.

Maybe the Raiders don't want to take a pass rusher at 4 and constantly be having to compare them to Khalil Mack, who is one of the best around.

What they could do is take a DT like Quinnen Williams and then trade back up using their 24th & 35th to jump up to 13 and take a QB if one falls or even one of the top TE's to help out Carr.

Williams and Hockenson are right up Mayock's alley.

This would be great for us if we could land a top OL and a DT like Dexter Lawrence or a CB.
