The Miami Dolphins will have a new number at tight-end this year as Mike Gesicki will be donning his college number 88 moving forward.
There are a lot of players that have superstitions about their jersey number. Mike Gesicki might be one of them. Last year after he was drafted in the second round, Gesicki wore the number 86.

Some speculation ran through the internet vine of rumor and speculation that Gesicki would somehow finagle the 88 from Leonte Carroo. That didn’t happen and when Carroo made the final 53 man roster, Gesicki was left with 86.

news is news I guess...
cant wait for the draft

Gesicki is going to have a good year! His ability to catch AND get open is being dismissed badly by many on the board. Yes! Of course he needs to get stronger. We're all in agreement on that point.

I hear he's going to be the next Gronk lol. The only place he showed anything was camp. Nothing sucks like when the all time receiving TD leader from your favorite college team get drafted by your favorite NFL team and bombs. Nothing would make happier than Gesicki living up to 42 overall pick i just don't see it. i love the Phins more than i hate penn state so i'll still pull for him but we all know he was the wrong TE pick.

Who's that in your Avatar pic..L.Carroo? Yeah, I think I'll pass on your opinions.

There's a Mike Gesicki video Easter egg at the bottom of this article. It's every target and catch that Gesicki had in 2019 on All-22.

I guarantee you, there's more physicality in that Gesicki video, in the way he created separation and got open, than you probably remember. He started off poor with that bad fade pass against the Titans and then I think people mostly remember stuff like the failed hurdle against the Texans.

They don't remember how he got open against the Titans (the play before the fade) and the Raiders by being really physical with his hands, creating space for the ball with physicality. They don't remember how impossible he was to stay with in man coverage when he ran drag routes. They don't remember how bad Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler were at placing the football in the sort of spots that give a Tight End a chance to make a play (something Tannehill has been bad at going back to Texas A&M). They don't remember BIG plays left on the field against the Bengals, Vikings, and Bills, because our QBs couldn't execute throws.

They don't remember how some of Gesicki's catches that come off as pathetic with no-gains were that way because the QB was late, or because he had zero business throwing it to Gesicki in the first place and made the wrong decision on a pretty simple route combination. They don't remember that Gesicki caught some of those balls even with the defender climbing all over him or hitting him immediately at the catch point.

Here also is a piece I did regarding Mike Gesicki's poor usage in 2018 and how it reflected a disconnect between coaching staff and front office.

I agree with ANUFan that there's something there that is being largely dismissed.
