Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard is under contract for 2019, entering the final season of his rookie deal — yet we have seen players opt out of voluntary workouts for less. But there are no politics or statements here for Howard, who the Dolphins have already expressed heavy interest in re-signing for the long-term.

Instead, as the Dolphins took the practice field for the first time for voluntary workouts, Howard was present and working hard. This display of good faith from Xavien is a pretty unique situation in today’s NFL. With a potential injury looming around any corner, it would be easy to say “I’ll be here…after I’ve signed my new deal.”

X is angling.

Truthfully, he won’t be around if and when we are peaking. I’ll take a 2020 1st

Whatever dude some fans are so wrapped up in the "rebuild". Yeah we should let all our young homegrown talent go. Too much Madden for to many fans. We should be happy with X showing up and take his situation one day at a time.

I'll say it over and over: How did it workout for the Redskins to overpay Josh Norman? He hasn't done anything yet.

An elite CB should be able to cover an elite WR real well, and Howard sucked against Hopkins.

If anyone offers even a 1st rounder for Howard in 2020, I'll take it. The man so far cant even stay healthy, he showed up to training to make the staff think he cares, but like anyone else he just wants to get paid and then take it easy. All players take it easy once they get paid. Not worth it.

The fact that we haven't signed him yet makes me wonder if we really want him around long term...

It's amazing to me that ANY player gets credit for showing up. Are you freaking kidding me? That's what football players are supposed to do. Show up for football. He's not a free agent. He's under contract so please don't tell me what he's doing is so special just because others don't do it.

My biggest issue with him is his lack of durability
First 2 yrs of his career he showed glimpses of what he could be, but his seasons were always marred with nagging injuries.
He put it all together this past season and made the pro bowl, but even then he still missed several games.
I would like to see him string together back to back strong seasons before I pay him like an elite player at his position.

Howard got screwed by our shitty zone coverage in that Texans game.

He will be even better this year with a real DC.

Let’s keep our best defensive player that we DRAFTED and sign him to a FAIR long-term deal.

Is that too much to ask, or does it just make too much sense?

How well did it work out for the Patriots to "overpay" for Stephen Gilmore (always makes me laugh when people say the Pats don't pay players or sign big FAs)? Or the Bears when they "overpaid" for Kyle Fuller? These are always weird arguments.

The fact that we haven't re-signed him yet doesn't surprise me at all, given this team's propensity for being terrible at contract negotiations and roster management.

People tend to mistake these contracts for military contracts. He's risking injury without a long-term deal. That's a risky business decision, and this is nothing more than a business.

Kyle Fuller is the only CB that meets the injury-free criteria some expect of our CBs and players in general. It's not realistic.

I know what you’re saying but he’s about to break the bank and he’s on a rookie second round pick salary. These are voluntary workouts. I’m not sure I would take that risk. I’d only have a problem if he sat out regular season games.
