Not A Good Draft

All in all... I like it... I think we added 2 maybe 3 line starters...we landed Rosen and a 2020 2nd rounder. I really hope the O-lineman can start as I really want to see what Rosen can do.

Well said...and for Rosen to succeed right away we would have needed more/higher picks to help solidify the OL (and pass rush for that matter). Right now our line is worse than AZ's was so how can anyone expect him to succeed? We have to pray Dieter ends up being an above avg starter, as just bc someone is starting for this team doesn't mean they should be. I didn't love the Van Ginkel pick but hopefully I am wrong. My fav part of the draft was probably picking up the extra 2nd rounder next year.

Arizona had all 5 starters injured last year for Rosen... I don’t think we’re worse...if the two rookies can play I think we can put a decent line out there.

I feel like they are trying to mold everything into the patriots way, ever since they came on board they are copying everything the patriots do and I feel like we have spend decades hating them just to follow their lead because of success?

Can we just bring a bit of the patriots way and form our own way as well? Instead of trying to copy everything the patriots do? Seems like we are being followers in some shape or form.

Another "The Patriots way" leg hugger....:nap:

I can't believe the Dolphins didn't win the Super Bowl this weekend....oh wait.

Will be interesting to see if any of the UDFA offensive linemen make the team.

I like what the Dolphins did in this year's draft, especially the moves they made in the second round. Even if Rosen turns out to be nothing special, the Dolphins trading back and picking up the extra 2nd in 2020 means they got him for almost nothing. I'm not concerned about his stats last year, that Arizona offensive line was as bad as it gets.

Read this article in this thread if you haven’t already... I was surprised!

Indeed...I actually would like them to even break the rules a little if they can acquire some O-line help... we need to see what we have in Rosen... putting him behind a really bad line is pointless.
I agree brother. No need to trade for him and watch him run for his life.

It's okay to not be in love with the draft, but I think it's quite clear to see the vision Grier and Flores have for the team.

Also, I hope this makes sense, but in past years we drafted guys strictly based on what their numbers looked like and how we projected they'd fit into a scheme rather than actually drafting them for what they were. That's how you end up drafting guys like Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner, and Jamil Douglas on the OL. All guys who look good, but also are seen as more athletic OL. What was the issue with all of them though? They had awful technique, no balance, and lacked awareness. All were OL that needed to built from the ground up and we used pretty high draft capital on them. Deiter and Prince are far from perfect prospects (and I've talked about Prince's Big 10 season struggles) but both do have qualities that you want. Both were classic Patriot like OL to draft. Both are maulers in the run game already and both are smart blockers.

A lot of people are hating on Van Ginkel. I get that too as arguably more prolific players were available, but remember. It's about what you will be asked to do. Van Ginkel already played the position he would be asked to play for us in Flores's defense in Jim Leonard's defense. AVG was asked to do a lot of stunt blitzes, read delayed blitzes, and adjust to plays based on looks. He's also a fairly decent athlete. So this was a case where you would not need to teach someone from the ground up.

I'm actually pretty shocked we put more focus on offense than defense, but each pick on offense (whether it works out or not) fits a new identity on offense. It's more about being smash mouth, more about being smart. More about knowing your assignment. In a perfect world Deiter, Prince, Cox, Gaskin, and even Rosen will all be seen as steals and become starters but that is unlikely to happen... but all of them should help with changing the culture in those meeting rooms. Less finesse more hitting, less flash more grit. It's a back to basic draft. Which can suck, but sometimes you need.

Now as for Rosen, based on how the trade worked out it's like we drafted a 2nd round QB. We have no commitment to him. He does have all the tools to be great. And while I think the concerns about his character are greatly overblown, he does have a big ego so hopefully he keeps that in check. If he sucks no big deal, but there's also the chance he could take a jump like Jared Goff and Mitch Trubisky took (both solid QBs but not on the talent level of Rosen) in year 2 when they had a real offensive staff calling plays.

Also on Rosen, I find it funny how Rosen had similar stats to Josh Allen last year (and arguably a bit better) but Allen is viewed by some people as a breakout star next year.

Who is the second rookie you are referring too? I hope its not our late round project, as I wouldn't expect much from him for awhile. There is no guarantee Dieter will even be avg in his first year.

And everyone seems to forget how often Miami players get injured as well. What happens if Tunsil or any other lineman gets injured this season? I think our oline will prob end up fairly close to AZ's last year. Hopefully Rosen has gotten better w experience and can handle it better than last year though.

Obviously they have to prove it....Dieter has 54 career starts at an O-line factory at various positions....I’m confident he will be our left guard.

Prince has all the tools, was top 5 ranked in this class as a run blocker... needs some coaching on technique but looks like a natural right tackle...he was a projected 3rd-5th round pick who slipped to the 6th... while he has to prove it, it’s not crazy to think he may be our best right tackle option.

I see this draft with a high ceiling and a moderate floor.

1st round we grabbed a very good DT prospect. Missed out on the potential elite ones but Wilkins has a lot of traits you want to build around.
2nd round they nabbed a QB with 4 more years of ELC(3+ option) who was a top 10 pick last year. Some ego issues may be present but to give up the 62nd pick for him to me is a worthy risk. He will get snaps this year to evaluate.
3rd round I like the guard they took. Solid.
The rest of the draft is a pure crap shoot. The project tackle, Prince, is someone to watch over the couple seasons to see if he can develop. Physically, size wise, he has what you would want in a RT

Add in they got another 2ns rounder for 2020, they did a good job to me.

I think Deiter is going to prove a good solid LG. Kilgore was fine when he was healthy, so if he is our starting center we shouldn't be too weak there. Jesse Davis should do better at RT than RG, so while not ideal, he is serviceable. The guard that the OL coach brought from Jacksonville looks like he has some ability, so he may be able to plug our hole at RG. Not ideal, but I think our OL will be improved, and definitely better than Arizona's last year. Fingers crossed.
