Josh Rosen Pocket Presence

Its hard for me to say what someone else saw that would make them write that, but any time Ive watched Rosen, whether in college or last year with the Cards, Ive always been impressed with his arm strength.

Okay, i haven't watched that much of his games. It's might be the way he delivers the ball but it doesn't seem to have that extra velocity that i like to see from Qbs. Additionally, his balls seem to have a "floaty" quality to them. Reminds me of the Chat Pennington days.

You can have good floaty and bad floaty. Rosen has great touch on the ball, something we havent seen in a while. If it was intentional and he hits his receiver in stride Im ok with it.

The ones that kinda hang there and get picked or contested are the bad ones obviously. Again though, hard to tell without looking at the particular clip.

I havent studied all of Rosen's plays, so I could be missing things too. But just from going by my own eyes, I'm not worried.

I'm not trying to say he is a guaranteed, surefire probowler, but I think Josh Rosen is his own worst enemy. He has all the talent needed to get there, question is whether he can make it happen.

Good stuff! Either Way, It sounds like we both agree that it's nice to have a highly drafted QB prospect in camp. It may or maynot work out. But the unknown and exploration phase, at least for me, is a breath of fresh air. Best part is if it doesn't work out then in 1, 2 years minimum we'll be drafting another QB to see what happens.

I really hope this kid can deliver. Because if he can then are team can ascend very quickly going forward.

Could it be that his placement is so good on some of his throws that it makes his arm look stronger than it is? The best throws I've seen him make, the ones where he squeezes it into a tight window, aren't fastballs but a product of just being really accurate and anticipating well.

That's not intended as a knock. Just seems like average arm strength but above-average to exceptional accuracy and ball placement.

That's the one area where I think he clearly has an advantage over Tannehill.

Can someone comment on his arm strength? He doesn't seem to have the arm talent/velocity/zip that you would like. Also, Is it me or does he seem to float his balls (there's a joke in there somewhere)?
His arm strength is way above average. He has a really smooth and natural throwing motion.

IT could be. Without a radar gun clocking his ball it might be tough to tell.

Unfortunately, you cant hear the zip on the film, but it looks like he gets it there quickly.

Its kind of like knowing how fast a car is traveling without looking at a speedometer. Most drivers can estimate a speed because they have been driving so long, but they will rarely have 100% accuracy.

And I'm not saying this kid has Jamarcuss Russell or Josh Allen type of arm strength, but I dont think there is much if any drop off from Tanny's arm. (And Tanny had a great arm imo)

I went back and watched some film from last year's game against Seattle and saw some really nice throws there, nothing that I felt indicated his arm was below NFL average. He fit a couple of nice sideline passes into tigh coverage around the 5 minute mark here.

He absolutely throws a pretty ball and it gets there. You'll get no argument from me on that.

And I think, if Wilson and Grant are healthy, he's got some interesting weapons in our offense already. He's got guys he can get the ball to on short passes who can make things happen after the catch. Stills, Wilson, Grant and Parker aren't a bad receiving corps. If Gesicki develops .... And I think our RBs are adequate. I think Gaskins is another guy who can be a weapon in the passing game with his elusiveness.

But our line ... good grief ...

Yep! I'm just trying to keep an open mind. We have alot of work to do and are missing a bunch of key pieces.

Josh Rosen might not be the guy that we all wanted, but maybe we will find that he is the guy that we actually needed:)

Are you saying he has above average arm strength because of his motion and arm mechanics? I only ask because they don't necessarily correlate. You can have a smooth release but if your arm isn't strong it's still not going to be strong. It's just going to enable you to do some things that will compensate for what you lack in arm strength or accentuate what arm strength you do have.

This isn't a bad outing for the kid at all! Gents, I'm getting a little tingly. We may have something to work with here.

@Avigatorx I have to admit he seems to be a tic slow on his read/deliver and as a result balls are being broken-up and i'm assuming incerpeted. That could be a result of just not processing what he's seeing because he doesn't fully trust his eyes and what he's supposed to do. More thinking rather than naturally acting.

We’re not talking about Dan Marino here either... I think he has plenty of mobility to operate aTom Brady pocket QB offense... which happens to be what we will be running.
Never said he didn't. I think he moves around well enough in the pocket to have success at the NFL level. Rosen's biggest problem during his rookie season was he was really slow processing information but some of that is to be expected from a rookie. My biggest issue with trading for Rosen is that the Dolphins have now muddled the decision on whether to draft a qb in the first round next year. I want them to regardless of how Rosen plays this season because I believe there is going to be better qb prospects then him in next year's draft, but I don't trust this front office to ever make the right decision.

I felt we gave up a little more for him than we needed and I still think the character/leadership/maturity questions are valid, but he's a Dolphin either way right now and as long as he does what he can to make the team better I am rooting for him. My ego's not so big that I want to see him fail or struggle just because I have some questions about him.

Maybe but you cannot guarantee that those qbs will be better. Tua didnt look very sharp when it mattered last year and who know if any of the others get hurt or stay another year. You cant live that far in the future and avoid taking a potential franchise qb now practically for free in hopes that next year will be the year we magically get the next marino. We have to try every year until we find one. If we have found one in rosen then the hardest part is over for this franchise and we can focus on building the foundation in next years draft and not blowin the whole load moving up for a potential franchise qb. There is no luck or peyton manning in next years draft, all 3 or 4 of them are no different then the '18 draft its all a guess there isnt one front office in the league that can predict a franchise qb.
