Intro To Andrew Van Ginkel: 5th Rd

I watched 10 minutes of film, and some aspects of his game shined.

  • Does a good job stripping the ball and punching out from behind.
  • Nice timing on stunts and gets to the QB.
  • Nice motor and hustle
  • Reads the offense and makes adjustments. Not a knucklehead.
  • Sets the edge, but is not dominant. Just enough to do the job.

Certainly looks like a guy who can fill that Van Noy role, add the fact is much twitchier and athletic than Van Noy. Probably will need to add some bulk, looks intelligent in coverage and looks like a very good 1st year pick for this defense!

Van Ginkel is light and doesn't shed blocks well. He's got a little speed, but nothing to write home about. He will require the scheme to get him pressure on the QB, but he's pretty good at all of those (games, stunts, twists, whatever you wanna call 'em). I see him more as a core special teamer at first, but if he could play the Van Noy role that would be fantastic. I kinda thought we might have Baker or Kiko play that role honestly.

Ugh. That Ohio St. game was sure disheartening. He looks athletic enough but he couldn't get off a block to save his life.

That's who I was thinking of. I was like Van Ginkel doesn't he play for the Pat's already

Heh, well let's hope that Van Ginkel is as productive for us as Van Noy has been for the Patriots. I think originally Van Noy was a 1st or 2nd round edge rusher prospect that was not too successful until Belichick put him into this role and system.
