Pass Rusher Shane Ray A Logical Free Agent Target For The Dolphins

He is the type of player, that the old regime would have over-payed for...hopefully not this one.

What exactly is our scheme? I don't think we have seen anything yet saying that they are absolutely, without a doubt, using the same scheme that Flores used in New England.

My prediction is that we will see a hybrid type of system that will take some elements of the NE scheme that fits the personnel on the roster and throw in some wrinkles so it isn't completely familiar to everyone.
It is a hybrid defense with a heavy emphasis on the dime/nickel packages to combat spread offenses. I'd guess we will see a lot of dime since the Patriots liked using that a lot. McDonald will be a LB/S type meant to move into certain places like Patrick Chung. The concern is depth at LB and DE. LB has been slim for a while and DE are a bunch of underperformers

ive been out coaching on the field for the last 7 years. Im behind a computer now for the first half of the day, so its such much easier to be on. Im enjoying posting again. and not posting about the gml lol
ditto

I do not believe even the coaches know at this point. I am confident they have a plan based upon the perceived talent of their players. I am confident that the coaching staff will demand that there are multiple looks available during the season and variability on the play sheet for each and every game. The plan will have to evolve based upon mini campers and training camp.

My point in posting that question was that everyone here keeps saying with certainty that they know what the scheme is going to be. But other than a couple of vague quotes from coaches, they haven't committed to anything at this point. I think it is premature for anyone on a message board to state with certainty that a player will or won't fit the scheme if no one knows what the scheme even is. I just did a quick search and found this quote from Patrick Graham. https://phinphanatic.com/2019/02/21/miami-dolphins-will-multiple-defensive-looks-according-graham/

"This is what we’re going to do. We’re going to do whatever Coach Flores wants us to do that week and what we’re going to try to do is try to teach the guys the concepts of the defense, what the coverage is, what the rush is – whether we’re rushing three, four, five or six, it doesn’t matter. How we deploy those guys in different spots and the outside looking in, you guys see it, it’s going to look multiple. It is going to be multiple. Are we talking in terms of 3-4 or 4-3? It’s just going to be multiple. We’re going to do what we’ve got to do that week and that game. We’re going to try to win that situation, whatever we have to do. If it requires all 11 guys to be on their feet, it requires all 11 guys to be on their feet. If it requires all 11 to be down in a three-point stance, it’ll look weird, but we’ll do it if that’s what we think is going to win the game.” – Miami Dolphins released transcripts

Also from that same article:

Graham also shot down the notion of size requirements for a specific scheme. In a 3-4 the defensive lineman are traditionally bigger while a 4-3 doesn’t require that kind of size. Graham doesn’t buy into that mentality because as he states, it’s about how you space the guys to fit what you are doing on that play.

Graham said the team will build on player attributes that they value such as use of their hands and footwork as well as how well they see the play unfold and react to it. The Dolphins are going to have to find players that can make that happen and it is unclear how many Graham and Flores believe are currently on the roster.

Okay very interesting, thanks for the read. I just want to see it applied because Gase was also the "play players to strength guys". It is coach speak until we see it applied.

I find Grahams comments about using the 3-4 without the size as interesting. We lack a big guy in the middle to eat blocks. Teams should not have any trouble getting through us. I think the first half of the year will look more like a trial period then

Agree with you 100%. A lot of people here are talking as if they know, but unless they have some insider info -which I doubt- they are just assuming we will do everything like New England does. Which is a fair assumption, but still only an assumption.
