Jimmy Johnson’s Strong Opinion On The Dolphins’ Trade For Josh Rosen

Just a guess, but I suspect Flores and company were in the room last year when NE was discussing QBs.
New England didn't act as if they were that high on Rosen. They inquired about him before the draft and NE had 6 picks in the top 101 so could have easily outbid Miami if they really wanted him. Especially considering Rosen's contract, if NE was sold on Rosen he would be wearing a Patriots uniform this year.

Grier / Flores also didn't appear to be all in on Rosen. Trading back to pick 62 before trading for Rosen could have easily backfired if Grier / Flores #1 goal was to obtain Rosen as a team like NE could have slid right in with a better offer. If Grier / Flores were completely sold on Rosen I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have just given pick 48 to ensure it happened.

You may be right about NEs interest, or lack thereof, but I see the two trades a little differently.

I believe they the trade with NO stands on it's own merrit, given the desire to accumulate future picks. I don't think they make the Rosen deal at 48, but after procuring an extra 2nd rd pick in 2020, they were willing to do it for #68, or whatever it was.

I think they played their hand pretty well for a change.

If memory serves me correctly, New England did a lot of due diligence on the QB class of 2018, which Rosen was apart of. I seem to remember rumors of New England potentially being very interested in his skillset. Fast forward to 2019, with several former New England coaches now with the Miami Dolphins and you have rumors of Flores and O'Shea pushing hard to trade for him. I have a friend who lives in the NE area, who texted me during the draft, claiming NE was interested in trading for him. But wanted it at a lower price. Miami just gave Arizona closer to what they were looking for in the 2nd round pick. New England is expected to have about 14 draft picks in 2020, after comp picks are awarded. They certainly have the ammo to move around next year and lord knows, the 2020 draft COULD be loaded at QB. This could be the year NE finally pulls off a huge trade up? Although, Miami should be in the driver's seat, due to an expected less than stellar season.

I don't think he's getting trashed. Some don't like the move but I haven't seen anyone say he's the worst in the league or a 2nd string Qb.

Based on the performance of both himself and the Cards last year, I can see how some would be skeptical. I think it's ok and actually enjoy different opinions. It makes the site more enjoyable.

I think that this will turn out to be an amazing move. Rosen is a perfect QB to run a NE style offense; which is coming. O’Shea was apart of the NE offense for a decade. He knows that **** inside and out. We now need to focus on the Oline and putting the right pieces around Rosen.

NE will definitely be gunning for a QB next year. Brady won’t last forever. Even though he won the SB, he started to trend down last year.

That trade gave the new Miami Dolphin Front Office instant cred all over the NFL! We look polished and poised and swooped in for an outstanding young QB who has winner written all over him. I can't wait to see what this new group has in mind as their next move. With Rosen and Christian Wilkins we have the new QBs of the offense and the defense.

Omar Kelly blocked me from his Twitter account! He's really a moron!!! All I said to him was that he didn't know **** about Football and he should be a greeter at Walmart. Sensitive dude!!

Lol! He must have thought twitter was a safe space.

I think The patriots pick of Stidham fits what they want as a qb. I think he’s going to thrive in NE.

I tuned out this draft.
The trade was surprising that they were able to pull it off.
Rosen could be the guy.
More importantly is the coaching staff.
The will set the tone.
We have been a poor team for so long, maybe the curse is finally over.

Seems as if Omar blocks a lot of folks...

Odd for a guy who likes to talk tough.

I think all true Dolphins fans should want this gamble to pay off. I know I do.

I wasn’t impressed enough to like the compensation they surrendered nor do I like the possibility of not being able to acquire a top QB from next year’s class, but now that the move has been made there’s no reason not to support it.

I just hope the oline is adequate enough to give the kid a chance.

Again, being completely sold on someone is not the idea. That's the subjective methodology when you try to be correct 100% of the time. But in doing so you risk sub 50%. The trade from 48 to 62 could have stood up fine on its own merit. That was very good value. But when you invest the 62 to acquire the 10th pick in the most recent draft, that's when the totality soars to the top of the charts, as correctly portrayed in another thread with the link to the guy who evaluates every trade based on value.

In an odd way that Kentucky Derby situation was a similar example. The runnerup connections took a shot at the winner being disqualified. They claimed foul even though their entry Country House wasn't the one who was impeded. It was a great risk/reward situation because all of a sudden 3 people can make you the winner of the most prestigious horse race in the world. It doesn't matter if your claim would be rejected all over the place, by different people. You aren't dealing with different people.

It was lousy for me because I had a win wager on Maximum Security, plus two matchup wagers on him. I ended up losing quite a bit on the race instead of winning big. The disqualification shoved Maximum Security all the way down to 18th place, meaning I lost the two matchup wagers even though my horse finished miles ahead of the other two. Yes, that still stings, especially since I saw Maximum Security win the Florida Derby in person last month. But throughout that 15 minute ruling I kept thinking what a terrific scenario it was for the connections of Country House. All the work, all the steps, all the variables that go into getting a horse into the Derby and then winning it, so instead of wobbling back to the barn in acceptance of second place they can win the Kentucky Derby via one persuasive phone call to the steward's office.

It will hold a mental asterisk and some complaints now, but none of the history books will care. Remarkable grasp of situational opportunity and value.
