J-off's Sideways Board For Miami

Very good question. I haven't looked into it closely, but I haven't noticed a significant pattern. When someone hits, drafted or not, we can typically look back and say, "Oh yeah, of course." We can look back at Chris Harris Jr and say, "He's not the fastest or most athletic, but he showed amazing instincts and coordination at Kansas, and he was all over the field."

In general, I'd say guys who don't fit prototypes but have some elite trait are probably the most likely to slip through the cracks when they shouldn't, but that comes in many forms. P. Lindsay was very good at Colorado - with excellent vision, receiving ability, and speed. He was just old and short.
I think Jalen Davis fits this, I saw hi level instincts and awareness, and confidence I might add, but the smallish stature seemed to turn teams off..

I was surprised that Davis went undrafted. Had him at 106 overall, and I agree with the positives you highlighted. He plays very quick and has elite ball skills. He's also a very good blitzer fwiw.

McCain is pretty good imo. You don't like or his cap figure?
Mixture of both. I dont hate him, but do think he makes a little too much. He competes hard, has a lot of heart, but just seems to get beat a lot. Was it the scheme? A lot of confusion at times last year, where people just didnt seem to know what was going on. Is he just not fast enough? Other times he can have some pretty solid coverage... maybe seeing him on the outside last year instead of the slot left a bad taste in my mouth, he was pretty good at blitzing from the slot also

Yeah he just needs to stay in the slot ... he's a little outmatched on the outside. He did good work on the inside -- after a few rocky seasons -- before attrition forced him out of position. It would be an added bonus if Davis steps up and creates some friendly competition.

Grier has always struck me as a safe drafter. That's just what he is. He wants to minimize risk and have easy press conferences when explaining why he took a player. He just doesn't want to hear difficult questions.

I agree, I don't really see how you could have any strong feelings towards the Wilkins pick. It was a fair pick. Would I probably have taken Bradbury or Simmons or Sweat? Probably. I had them all rated fairly similar in addition to Wilkins. It just boils to down to what your philosophy was in how you wanted to start the rebuild. You had two options - start with defensive line or offensive line. Either was a legitimate start.

I probably would have slightly favored Garrett Bradbury if I was making the pick. That's probably the pick I would've made there.

But, you folks get Wilkins. They chose to start with the defensive line. However, it's what they're able to do in regards to addressing the IOL today that determines how good of a pick the Wilkins pick really was in my opinion.

Just take a look at Baldy’s Breakdown and why I say I favored Bradbury.

Just felt like this kid was one of the more special centers I’ve seen in a while. Miami had a chance to grab a great one. It’s just such an important position now.

A lot of people here trying to tell me guys like Bradbury or Lindstrom weren’t worthy of top 20 grades. This is why you study guys and put in the film work....so you know. I watched him kick Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence’s butts all over the field. In addition to many more.

Vikings look like they got themselves a great player for a long time.
