Rosen Pick Can Harm Fins

Rosen will get his shot but he needs to make the most of this opportunity because there is nothing to stop them from investing high in a 2020 QB.

Personally, I'm confused as to why all of a sudden we have the worst team in the NFL.

We were in the same boat last year...zooming for 3-4 wins, worst in the NFL, etc...we won 7 games with Ryan Tannehill and Brock ****ing Osweiler....OH and a HISTORICALLY bad defense.

We dump Quinn and Wake, let our average RT go, get our WRs back, and I'm supposed to believe that all of a sudden winning 6 games is some sort of a miracle? Not even mentioning the addition of a defensive stud calling the shots.

I just feel a disconnect here. We have holes, sure, but I didn't expect Fitzpatrick to get us a #1 overall pick and I sure as hell think Rosen can win as many games if not more than Fitzpatrick.

Simply because we lost players off our roster and didn’t replace them (yet) and may not strive too - adding AAFL players is not dipping into the first wave of free agency

I kno I kno I have been told that the season hasn’t started and just wait for the draft - well the draft is over and we will have trouble getting to the QBS and more importantly protecting our new asset Rosen

DEs we lost two starters do not fall off trees - getting to the QB is not about defensive scheme just ask the Jets and Raiders how scheming to get to the Qb worked last year

The FO is clearly allowing the draft to come to them instead of chasing the dream of POs

Should Rosen ball they will let the draft come to them

Should Rosen not ball the draft will already have come to them

Offensively minus the right tackle, who was not awful.

Agreed on that - we also lost a few of our weapons. So, it's TBD as to how badly our offensive line will perform as a unit vs. last year.

I believe we won more games than we should have in 2018. We were 3rd worst in point differential behind Arizona and Oakland and that’s a better indicator of team performance than its record.

Having said that, I also believe that not the roster but the coaching staff was that bad. If this new staff is any good, we won’t be at the bottom this year, neither in wins nor in point differential.

This I 100% agree with. I think our defense will greatly outperform last years.

We lost a decent RT and 2 defensive ends. Not buying some major drop off.

And of our wins which were boss where we ran the opponent into the ground on both sides of ball and which games could have gone either way? Because - every team believes they improved from last year

And our division is improved can you argue they aren’t??? That is 6 wins or losses and I expect we lose all six -(I doubt average players are going to be schemed up) factor in injuries and few good subs and Rosen can still play well and we lose those 6 games

We replaced that QB with a QB thats shown he can lead a team to the first overall pick. Thats the difference. This team has less talent than the cardinals team had last year.

We miraculously won games last year. We overachieved. Thats why I think the whole "coaching has to better this year" is not a guarantee. We got a first time head coach. A first time OC. Things can go south quick just like it has for every other coordinator that has come out of New England.

We have the lowest win total in Vegas right now. Our odds got hit after the draft.......or got Rosen depending out how you want to look at it. 5 with -120 juice on the under. Last year we started out at 5-5.5 but that got pushed to 6 with -200 juice on the over.

We lost Frank Gore, who played really well for us. We lost Ju'Wuan James, who was one of our best OL. Inconsistent, yes, but still our second best OL. We moved our starting quarterback who consistently posted an efficient passer rating and was better than some folks are giving credit for now that he's no longer on the team. We lost Cameron Wake (best pass rusher) and we have added... a defensive tackle. Don't get me wrong, he's probably going to be a very good defensive tackle, but he's not a pass rusher.

Those are key losses. There are a number of reasons why people think we aren't going to win a lot of games this season, and certainly not all of them have to do with Josh Rosen having a bad rookie season.

I didn't read the 8 pages of comments inbetween, but I have to agree w the original poster on this one. If Rosen looks decent this season and we decide to pass on a top QB next year (or play ourselves out of the top 10) it could be disastrous long term.

My problem w the move is that our roster and oline are garbage so it will be hard to evaluate him after only 1 yr. It will be easy to make the same excuses we did w tannehill...that "once we get a good line" in front of him he will be elite. 7 yrs later this is where we are at. We could very easily end up in that same mediocre range for the next decade if we put all our eggs in the Rosen basket after this season.

Disagree. Major difference is that Flores and O'Shea have seen Brady in games and practice for quite some time and have a "Gold Standard" on which to assess Rosen. I've said all along, I'm fine with either decision they end up making because it will be as "informed" as any!

The main argument for acquiring Rosen is that he has a chance to be good, for a minimal price.

The flaw here is that most posters say “hey, if he bombs then we just go QB in 2020”. No downside, right?

Wrong.

It is VERY likely that he wins the starting job early on, and with a year already under his belt, he may grind us to 6 or 7 wins.

If that happens, most likely in my opinion, we will be out of the sweepstakes for a top QB in 2020. Trust me when I say that a QB needy team will not trade out of their top spot/s I’m 2020, regardless of the compensation offered.

So, a likely outcome is Fins in a draft purgatory position, again.

The only workaround is to start Fitzcake for the entirety (or most) of the season. And then let Rosen and Tua/Fromm etc battle for the starting position in 2020.

There are always risks associated with every move made by a NFL front office including the one you mention. I prefer a front office that swings and misses to one that waits another year to take a swing. The cost paid for the swing this year with Rosen is reasonable, so I am all in.

Agree with that. People seem to overlook, although Miami 'won some games they should have lost,' the games were close at the end. And that's WITH Gase, Burke, a roster some call "trash," and injuries. I also think the D will surprise. I place far more emphasis for improvement on the coaches. As some of us have said, in the last three games of last year, I don't think I've seem worse game prep, worse play-calling (on both sides), nor a team seemingly disinterested. That's all coaching.

I understand what you are saying, but the chance to draft in the top 5 picks in a year that happens to be touted as one of the best QB classes in decades, does not come around often obviously. Unless by the end of the year everyone is convinced that Rosen will be a better pro than Tua, Fromm, and Herbert, I would still take a QB next year...even if Rosen outplays him in 2020.
