Battles On The Offensive Line Figure To Highlight Training Camp

I agree that at this time, that probably looks like the starting O-line. I doubt Prince starts this year and he might not even play unless we have several injuries. The one surprise could be Calhoun starting at RG but again, there's a good chance one of the starters is not on the roster at this time.

btw, I'd predict that we'll be looking for one or two new starters again in 2020

That’s probably a safe prediction Danny...lol

That list of O line not named Tunsil, looks and sounds god awful. I’d be shocked if they don’t add anymore pieces to that shoddy line.

Hope not. I'm glad he's here and I'm going to support him 100%.

He’s gonna take some crash test dummy hits. The fact that they haven’t even given him a viable starting right tackle option to assist with the qb eval amazes me. But maybe they plan on making chicken salad out of chicken **** Dante scarnechia style. What a false sense of security that is. Or maybe they don’t really care if rosen sinks or swims. The actions seem to lean to the latter.

I hope we add more guys cause that line is brutal if we have to use backups. Need bettter starters

If our offense doesn’t need our guards to get to the 2nd level that much then I can see Asiata doing something..he struggles centering his target on the move.

...
In the end, I think it will shape up this way:
LT -- Tunsil
LG -- Deiter
C -- Kilgore
RG -- Reed
RT -- Davis
I see it ending this way as well.

IMHO, there are 2 positions that are nailed on: LT Laremy Tunsil and LG Michael Deiter. Nobody is beating out either of those guys. I think C is still a bit up in the air, but for now, it's Kilgore. Likely, Jesse Davis starts, and I think and hope it is at RT, where he showed best in the past. It's a projection, but Reed definitely shows flashes of being the answer at RG. At some point this offseason or next, we will replace Kilgore, and the entire right side of the OL is on notice that this year is a trial … if they don't show well, they will not be starting in 2020, because we have a LOT of draft picks and will definitely be bringing in competition for C, RG and RT. So, if you're good …. the time to show it is in 2019.

I believe Isaiah Prince is a guy with size and power as well as good potential to compete at RT … but IMHO, he only wins a starting spot in 2019 if we have injuries or the coaching staff is serious about tanking and uses this year to blood high-potential but raw guys like Prince. My guess is that Prince is our swing tackle in case we have injuries.

We haven't really discussed Zach Sterup, who has a chance to compete at RT this year, but will likely be replaced in 2020 when we start using all those draft picks.

I suspect the coaches evaluation of the performance they see from the OL prior to our first game will, to some degree, dictate who the coaches start at QB.

I would not be surprised if Fitz starts out as our QB with Rosin coming in AFTER the offensive line gels. This is because we have less to lose if Fitz gets hurt or performs poorly.

If Fitz plays well he will stay in with occasional uses of Rosen to see if he can function reasonably well with a new team and under a new staffs (for him and the team) playbook.

If Rosen is a mess, then it's back to Fitz. If Rosen is successful, he will be used more and more, eventually starting.

Nothing fancy or startling in this approach. Just a sensible approach to using two QB's as assets during a new staffs 1st year re-developing a team.

PS: This type of planning would be backed up by trying to get a good, not average, 3rd QB. It looks like they are trying to do this by bringing in and looking at a lot of potential 3rd string QB's.

Couldn't agree more - very good post.

I’m gonna be utterly disgusted if I got a josh rosen talent in tbe building and I got to watch Ryan career theory of diminishing returns and benches himself Fitzpatrick start out the season cause I dont trust my protection enough to not get the kid a trip to the morgue while my collection of jags gels.

Ditto.

I think people are making a lot of assumptions on this Jesse Davis tackle stuff. To my recollection he didn’t even get cross trained in training camp last year. And I don’t recall even a single tackle snap in the preseason. Maybe some of that had to do with wanting to get him as many guard snaps as possible. Maybe.

Seems kinda odd if they see him as a tackle option. But regardless he was lousy in 2018 at guard. As inconsistent as they come. Whiffed off the ball and got smoked plenty. I get it he’s a plus athlete so tackle may be in play here but if he’s as inconsistent at tackle as he was in guard it’s gonna show up real ugly witb all that space play. There is no phone booth to rely on.

What about the Sterup man?

Are we really relying on Daniel Kilgore? Yikes. I didn't pay attention for several months. I guess Travis Swanson got booted somewhere in there. I preferred him to Kilgore.

Overall I'd say the OP's starting estimation looks logical now, among the players we are aware of. However, the Miami Dolphins have turned offensive line into an impossible jigsaw for too many years when there was no reason for it to unfold that way. These guys are technicians and street fighters more than elite athletes. We should be able to locate a decent to good player somewhere at home or among other teams castoffs.

Jesse Davis should be right tackle not right guard.

Asiata should be gone

Wesley Johnson signed with the 49ers.

Travis Swanson is still out there.

I'd bring him back.

There is a point where you have to play what you have, not what you hope to get.

We are almost at that point. Not all of our weaker positions have viable alternatives that we can afford or rely on. Once we are down to 53 players the pickings get even harder to come by. Complaining about it may be useful short term therapy for a fan, but it won't solve any problems.

The best approach in my (Not So Humble Opinion) is to let the new staff sort it out. They are the ones that will be responsible for the new roster, their training, the playbook and each game plan. I believe they have a plan in mind that will address our issues of less then average players in the OL. I don't know what their plan is but I'm sure its better then any of the suggestions I've read so far. I am sure the staff is not running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

The new staff will find a balance of players, plays and game plans; JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE NFL!!!!!

How well that balance works out is what will make the season a success or a failure. Enjoy the show. Its possible to learn something about the entire organization from the results that will be coming our way. Some may be good, some may be bad, but the stuff that is unexpected is what really makes things interesting. That's what makes college football so much fun to watch; the mistakes and their aftermath.
