Rosen: Must Earn A Starting Role...?

I'm sure we are going to see plenty of Rosen throughout the year, but I don't think they're giving it to him. It isn't just coach speak. There is no draft attachment to him (as in, he wasn't a QB our FO drafted). They are going to want to see what he can do and if he can be the answer long term. They need to see quite a bit before next year's draft. BUT, this unknown/potential long term answer has to earn it. BFlo ain't giving him the keys without working for it first.

This is not the coaching staff that would hand the starting job to a Josh Rosen based on Miami having traded a 2nd round pick for him.

This is not the coaching staff that would conduct a sham competition, either.

If this were Adam Gase, then yeah. There would probably be a sham competition, Rosen would "win", and he would play. But this is a coaching staff full of hard-asses. You could see Jake Rudock starting games before Josh Rosen, if they feel like Rosen isn't "getting it".

Agreed. I don't think Flores is giving anything away for free.

I think the staff pretty much knows what they’re getting, they’ve been researching and evaluating him way before the draft. I’d be surprised also if he didn’t start the season, but not disappointed if you didn’t.

A voice of reason!

Some People in here need to temper down their expectations of Rosen this year. Yeah I understand he’s the new flavor of the year with the Dolphins, and to have some kind of hope. But the kid is working in a new system and is going to be playing behind a porous Oline, it’s basically the same situation he was in at Arizona. I’m hoping for the best but not expecting much.

Perfect scenario would be Rosen coming in around Week 4, when the OL has hopefully taken some steps forward. It's fine to let him deal with some adversity. You just don't want to send him out in a horrific situation, and the first few weeks could extra rough. If the OL is ready to play decent football in Week 1, I'll be surprised/impressed, but if Rosen is playing in Fitzpatrick's range, you'd like to see him as soon as possible.

I think this is the way to go. Yes we need to see what he can do, but also set him up for success, ease the guy in at least a little bit. Get Fitz out there at first and see what we have, let coaches work out some kinks and whatnot, and then start planning Rosen's starts.

Or, like last season, the opposite happens. The offensive line is better at the beginning. Suffers some injuries. But Fitz is playing well and there is no reason to hand it over to Rosen. Nightmare scenario. Expecting the line to gel, when you have no clue whether they will or when they will, is not what you let dictate whether Rosen is the starter.

Coach stated that Rosen must earn the starter job. Hmm. Everyone knows that Rosen will be the starter, regardless of his performance in camp/exhibition games, at the start of the season.

Agree?
If "Everyone" already knows it, why bother starting a thread about the question?

Maybe Coach meant what he said. We simply don't know.

Plausible for sure, but I think the actual play of the OL should factor into the equation. Week 4 is my best-case scenario for when they might be ready to play decent ball.

You don’t hand 2nd round QBs the starting gig..
