Rosen: Must Earn A Starting Role...?

Perfect scenario would be Rosen coming in around Week 4, when the OL has hopefully taken some steps forward. It's fine to let him deal with some adversity. You just don't want to send him out in a horrific situation, and the first few weeks could extra rough. If the OL is ready to play decent football in Week 1, I'll be surprised/impressed, but if Rosen is playing in Fitzpatrick's range, you'd like to see him as soon as possible.
I agree with this and said so when we first got him and people jumped all over me telling me he has to start week one. I think the best time would be right after the bye. The other thing that could happen tho is that Flores picks a starting O-line very early in camp(doubt this happens) and plays them a lot in the pre season games(also doubt this happens) and he feels the O-line is ready to protect the young QB. Yes we need to see what he can do but we won't know anything if he's getting sacked 5 or 6 times on week one.

I don't think the team will just start Rosen even if he doesn't win. The players see the QBs everyday in practice too and if one is better they know it. IF you start the lesser guy, that is a very quick way to lose the locker room.

Coach stated that Rosen must earn the starter job. Hmm. Everyone knows that Rosen will be the starter, regardless of his performance in camp/exhibition games, at the start of the season.

Agree?
Disagree.

If our coaching staff is smart, they will not start Josh Rosen, but rather bring him in for game 5. It takes a while for players to learn a new system. And unless you were under a rock last year, you know that our OL was NOT good last year, and we lost Ju'Wuan James and are probably replacing him with one of those guys who started last year, Jesse Davis. At best we're returning a journeyman center who is getting older and was out injured almost all of last year, Kilgore. Starting next to him will be a new journeyman who wasn't rated particularly well with the Jaguars, Green, and a rookie 3rd rounder, Deiter. Jesse Davis is our only returning OL not named Tunsil. This is not a recipe for success even AFTER they learn the system, but until then … this OL will be leaky. Not where we want to throw Josh Rosen as he is also learning the playbook of an offense that is extremely QB-driven.

Sure, Laremy Tunsil will be good, but he was good last year when he spent the entire offseason trying to wash off the stench of the previous season, training against Robert Quinn and his exceptional pass rush and alongside Josh Sitton, the best guard in the NFL over the last decade. Yeah, once the season started Sitton got injured almost immediately and Quinn created pressures but not sacks … but that's irrelevant for Tunsil. He spent the entire offseason fueling a burning desire to prove he wasn't a bust. He spent the entire preseason trying to live up to the standards set by Sitton, and trying to prove himself against a worthy opponent in Quinn who was himself trying to prove his contract. So Tunsil came into last season READY. None of those things are true this offseason … and Tunsil is learning a new offense … and playing next to a rookie … and going against Charles Harris in practice ... in a season where few people have much hope of competing for the division or even playoffs.

Then there is the entire WR corps, who are very promising, but also learning a new system, and it depends on timing with a QB who is also learning the ropes. I have higher hopes for Gesicki and the TE group than most, but I doubt any of you really expects our TE's to be the crutch that keeps the pocket clean or always provides a friendly outlet for a young QB in a new system. All of our RB's/FB's are new except Drake … and he has had injury issues in the past.

Here's why I say Rosen shouldn't start until game 5. Because in the past it takes about 5 weeks for a team to "get" the offense and start performing competently. In week 5 we have a bye. So, let Fitzmagic start the first 4 weeks--the offense's learning curve times. Then install Rosen as the starter after that, giving him two full weeks to run the offense and prepare, then come in for week 6 (game 5) as the starter. This allows our OL to get some cohesion. It allows the rest of the offensive players to work out the kinks and start providing competent support. By game 5, after the bye, Josh will have a decent chance to play, learn, and develop, without having to take the blame for the rest of the offense not being up to speed. Probably, we will have lost at least 3 games as well, so the expectations of the fans and media will be lowered, and support for Rosen learning the ropes will rise.

Let's set Rosen up for success. Let's give him a fair chance. Let's let the best man win the starting job to start the season. I think that will be Fitzmagic, and if it is, that's not a bad thing. Then, we can always go to Rosen when we can provide him a platform to succeed. The Cardinals did not do that. They threw him to the wolves with a bad OL, bad coaching, players who didn't know the system (some off the street), and very little chance to succeed. And Rosen did not succeed. Let's give him that chance.

He was a starter in the NFL last year. If he wins the battle, he should start right away.
Yes of course if he wins the job, that’s different then just handing it to him..he’s now a 2nd round pick competing at the qb position..nothing handed to ya now.

Generally agree, but I still think if Rosen is CLEARLY/UNQUESTIONABLY better, he'll start. If it's close, I suspect they defer to the vet. The wild card is the OL.

I think the goal isn't to field the best QB, necessarily. But rather, to get the team to a position where they can get a fair read on how good Rosen is/can become, without destroying the kid's confidence or fan's opinion of him. To do that, they really should wait a bit before throwing him in there.

That being said, if Rosen is clearly and unquestionably better (unlikely if Fitzmagic is healthy), then I agree, it would be hard for the coaching staff not to start him. Fortunately, I think Fitzmagic will be the better QB at the beginning of the season, and start. Given the drastic change in systems, our team and offense in particular, is going to be shaky, and we'll likely lose most of those games. That just makes it easier to turn to Rosen when he's ready.

The alternative is that we start Rosen, we lose most of our games, then bench the kid and go back to Fitzmagic just when the team is getting the hang of this offense. That seems like a disaster scenario to me, which is why I'm hoping we start Fitzmagic and bring in Rosen at the bye week.

Everybody talks about the Patriots way that is coming here. Please tell me a time that they started an inferior talent that was young over a veteran. FItzpatrick is clearly the better qb and this coaching staff is not going to forgo wins to develop a player.

I actually think Fitz is the starter and has the edge....Rosen is going to have to beat him out to be the week one starter. If he doesn't, it may be a few games. The OL is the other issue. Coach may want the line to gel through a few games with a more experienced QB behind it.

I don't think that's "clear" at all.

Fitz definitely has an edge in experience, but Rosen has the edge in physical talent.

I also believe Josh is the "hungrier" of the two.

Here's one prediction that should gain universal support . . . if Rosen DOESN'T start, there will be a chorus of 'I told you Rosen sucks. Can't even beat out RF!!!'

It is pretty clear?. Fitzpatrick was 5th in passing Dvoa last year ( much better than Winston who was 15th) and Rosen was 34/34 of all qualifying Qbs.

Fitzpatrick was 3rd in the league in Any/a vs Rosen who was 33rd.

People are severely underestimating Fitzpatrick due to memes or whatever the f they think. This fan base is actually really bad at evaluating qbs probably because of the Wingdings they follow on social media.

I do think the Rosen trade was really good and expect him to be here a while but I don’t think this staff is going to lose games just to evaluate him.

Agreed. Also, I think even amongst those of us who have our doubts, we would think that not giving Rosen an audition in a meaningless season would be a waste. One way or another, Rosen should get multiple games under center to prove whether he is worth building around or not. If the answer is no, so be it, and let's get one of those 3 QB's in 2020. But to leave the question unanswered in a season destined to miss the playoffs …. would seem like we're missing an opportunity.

You sure about that?
