Dolphins Extend X Howard

So what? That's more a reflection how devoid of talent Miami is more than anything. Plus, I would hope that this organization would finally be smart enough to not pay a running back anything more than a bargain type contract.
It's all according to how much talent is on your team and if you keep wishing to burn 3 Rd round picks on the position. When we get to a point that we have a staff that can develop talent better you have to consider resigning a Drake.

I don't see how people can't see the idea behind keeping homegrown talent, especially when they extended him early which will be at a discounted rate by next season. The salary cap will continue to rise, the yearly rates for top corners will continue to rise and if Howard would have hit the market, after he performs like he will, we wouldn't have been able to keep him. The NFL already holds him at high level for a high-level position, and that itself would of made this Jarvis Landry esk. But this would of been at a position that is a lot harder to replace than a slot wideout.

Hot damn!

FINALLY, we made the right move at the right time. We've cut unproductive cap (older players who wouldn't last to see the full rebuild), but we're building around a cornerstone CB in Howard. We have Minkah Fitzpatrick locked in, along with Christian Wilkins and a several promising younger LB's. On the offensive side, we have Laremy Tunsil, Michael Deiter, Mike Gesicki, and Kenyon Drake as long-term pieces around a young QB (Josh Rosen or someone we draft in 2020).

Front-loading this contract allows us to USE this salary cap today to build a team. It allows us to lock up our lock down CB long term. By the fourth year of this contract, we'll have some flexibility and his contract will be reasonable. Good move.

Did Howard peak last year?
By peak, do you mean he hit a high point and will be declining now?

Or that he will never play better than last year, but will continue to play at that level barring age and injury?

"Peak" seems to imply the former.

I'm hoping you were asking if we think he's still ascending (which I do).

“Only” $46M GTD, definitely thought he’s get way more than that. Will look like chump change when Ramsey gets near $65M GTD
This is the important part, the guaranteed money isn't earth-shattering and it is relatively front-loaded so he will not become a typical Miami cap casualty in the last year or two of his deal.

By the time we pay our Qb whether it be Rosen or a Tua, Howard will be through that deal

I must admit. It is really a different feel to this FO. I am sold on a plan, no big spending or splash with no direction. This is downright terrific and in the midst of negativity, the FO has been on point. Nice.
