Mark Walton

He is an uber long shot at best. I'm all for giving out second chances but 1) he'll have to get his charges reduced first and foremost. A gun and drug related charge will probably carry a few months of jail time. 2) he needs to make sure he is clean in life and has everything there in order and then 3) impress enough to out perform several other guys with far less baggage who want to play in the NFL also.

So odds to make the final cut have to be 100:1.

You do realize he was breaking the law? You just can not choices what laws to follow and discard the rest. It doesn't work that way. If you do not like the laws then lobby to get them changed. But don't think just because you don't agree with them, you can do your on thing. This is why I no longer live in the US. I love my country, but the mental state of some Americans has got to be questioned. But then again, maybe he is too mentally incapacitated to realize his actions. In that case, I wouldn't want him on the team anyway.

When you lived in this country, did you never drive over the speed limit?

We cant change the laws, as dumb as some may be. But we can judge them based on how idiotic they may be.

I'd take those odds and laugh to the bank. If he stays clean hes making the final roster, hes probably better then Ballage due to better vision

Weapons possession not good, but other players have had similar charges and it wasn't really career threatening or more than a possible 4 game suspension. The battery charge stems from an altercation he had at his apartment complex with a couple in the parking lot. Apparently someone started filming the confrontation and Walton took the camera. No punching or body slamming a woman in the parking lot here. Likely a misdemeanor that could end up being dismissed or settled out of court. I'm thinking the worse case scenario is probation by the legal system and maybe a short NFL suspension due to the number of events in a short period of time.

You can definitely change laws. But I guess the great educational system in America doesn't teach Civics anymore.

The coaches must see something special in him to sign him even with all the legal woes. A blessing in disguise? Maybe he corrects his ways and developes into a steller player. Let's hope that is the case.

But you definitely can categorize each offense and come up with an educated guess of what kind of person he is. Are these non-violent offenses or violent offenses? Kids do a bunch of reckless things that you can say he'll probably grow out of. But if it's a violence, then he may have an anger issue and that's more of a red flag than marijuana or reckless driving.

Personally, I am not a big fan of this signing. I realize stupid kids do stupid things but they normally learn how to keep their nose clean after the first or second one. There is nothing wrong with kicking the tires on as many players as possible but character needs to be part of the formula. If he does make the team out of training camp, you have to wonder if he will be suspended for a few games to start the season.

I do agree with this sentiment. I also would like to see us try a different approach this time around. Giving him a chance is the definition of low risk high reward. If he does not turn out it won't cost us anything. Walton is only entering his second year and it won't kill us. If guys like Tyreek hill van get a multiple chances than so can Mark walton

Well... for my 2 cents, I am going to say that this guy is as dumb as a rock, and a wannabe gang banger.
As such, I doubt if he'll change. Most of these guys cling to the lifestyle as if only weaklings dont behave like they do.
That said, if he lights it up (not his weed), he only has to beat out Gaskin and Laird for the job.

Well lets hope he turns his life around and Flores and company gets him to play up to his ability.
I hope Flores works out for obvious reasons but if he doesn’t some of you guys will be crushed. I don’t get all the high expectations with him yet. He hadn’t proven anything without patriots. I think some posters need to temper their expectations.

As far as a football player, what type of bAck is he? Third down? Every down back? Speed guy? What value would he bring? I don’t know much about him. Anybody care to share ?

He's kind of a Tony Nathan type, if I had to pick a player from Dolphins history. I'm not sure if you go back that far. Walton is not as tall or sturdy as Nathan but their styles are similar. More slippery than fast. Capable of multiple fluid moves on the same run but not really a threat to take it the distance unless everything busts wide open. Good out of the backfield. Can be used as kick returner but he'll never really scare you in that role. The Canes tried Walton as kick returner as a freshman but then moved away from him. Likewise the Dolphins had Nathan returning kicks his rookie season and maybe a little bit beyond that. He did a good job on punt returns of squeezing everything that was available but everyone could sense it wouldn't be a long term role.

Of course, Nathan was ultra dependable and Walton is the opposite of that. But on raw ability he certainly has a chance to make the final roster. I wish that 100/1 were actually available at some reputable joint. I don't think he will make it, simply because regimes are very loyal to their own draft picks. Edge to Gaskin. But Walton is probably closer to 2/1 or 5/2 than 100/1.

He is at the point where I believe he can put his legal troubles behind him if he is willing to change his ways. The Dolphins will assist him in getting the finest legal representation available and the charges can be mitigated and dealt down. But, and this is a very big but, if this kid does one more stupid thing his chance at an NFL career is virtually over. So, ability won't do it this time. He has to show character, we'll see if he has any.
