New Pieces Coming Together On Offensive Line

https://www.miamidolphins.com/news/new-pieces-coming-together-on-offensive-line

“I’m really fired up,” Flaherty said Thursday when all Dolphins assistant coaches met with the media in Davie. “I had a conversation with both those guys the last two weeks, just checking to see how they’re doing and working out, make sure that they’re running and things like that to get ready for this weekend. Really looking forward to see how those guys develop because both played a lot of football at really good schools, Wisconsin and Ohio State. I’m fired up.

I just read that Barron can dunk a basketball, and can squat 600 pounds and bench presses 450 pounds. I had no idea he was that strong or athletic.

Were the season to start tomorrow, I see three of the OL starters as Tunsil, Kilgore, Davis. Those three haven't changed since Flores was hired. Now, that doesn't mean they'll start game 1, but the topic is "pieces coming together." Those pieces were there from the beginning - no "coming together."

There are certainly new faces - some with promise. But, excluding hope/projections, none have 'proven' themselves as starters. None have done anything to lock in a spot. I'm cautiously optimistic for '19, but I don't see pieces "coming together" in a way to increase my optimism.

Our OL is gonna be a disaster on the right side next season, no matter how we slice it.

It's pretty crazy our OL has been notably bad for a full decade. Ten full years of rinse and repeat HORRIBLE offensive lines... pretty mind blowing.

Maybe or maybe not. Good coaching can make the most pedestrian players look at least solid, that's why the Patriots continually lost their best linemen, and within a few weeks, the holes seemed non-existent.

Not saying your wrong, right now that right side looks like a huge question mark, but if the system is worthwhile, and we actually finally have a decent O-line coach, we might be better this year then expected.

We brought in Mills to start at RT imo. If Prince is amazing and beats out all comers at RT then that's a great problem but I see the kid more of a project. The ball is coming out fast in the new offense so pass blocking is a bit easier. These new players are about running the football. Clearly there will be a new focus on the ground game and I for one love it. Cox is the battering ram Full Back and Drake and Ballage can blast through holes when things are clicking. I see Rosen as a guy that is young, bright and can make every throw. I'm starting to see an offense coming together. There's lots to be excited about!

Why would they?
Would Billacheat name a starter in May? Highly doubt it. Remember, this is a Patriot staff, and up to this point have done things the Patriot way. IE: 100 million salary cap space and a boat load of draft picks in next years draft. I think this staff will work very similar to their mentor. And I'm grateful for it.

Many here hate the term "Patriot way", but it seems like the "common sense way" to me.

I do believe it takes coaches that are able to think outside the box, and adapt to what they have, as opposed to jamming a square peg into a round hole.

No doubt, good coaching can take us from being a 3 win team to a 6 win team. But that's the thing, we're going to be BAD this season, regardless of coaching... and I don't think a lot of people get that... every year, people think we're going to overachieve, and this year people think we could win 7-8-9 games.... when it's gonna be more like 3-4-5 and if we're really well coached, 6 games. We gonna be bad. Lets get that straight... lol.

I'm not comfortable with "bad." That doesn't mean I expect 'good.' Gase won 7-8-9 games with Tannehill/Cutler/Os, No OC, no DC, a poor OL, no pass rush, no FS, no game plans, and assistant coaches who should have been selling cars. And still in the playoff hunt after Thanksgiving. Yes, it was that bad. Thus, I'm struggling with "regardless of coaching." *IF* this coaching staff is average, at minimum, I think Miami can get to 6 wins. Roster? I'm more worried about OG and a 2nd CB than pass rush.

If Rosen is the real deal (Proves it very early), and the O-line problem is somewhat solved (They at the least look solid) then I think Miami can win anywhere from 6 to 10 games...If those two areas are proven to good, then I can't see less then 6, and unless other parts of the team play better then expected, can't see more then 10.

I am not saying your 3-6 win team prediction is wrong, cnsidering the type of schedule we will have to face, but I really like our chances if the QB position and the O-line do their job.

Then again, I also don't know how good this Coaching staff will be yet, so my prediction is if we had a very good productive off-season...Including the right coaches.

Yeah man, this is the very type of thinking we see every.single.season. If everything goes perfectly - our NO DEPTH team has ZERO issues and all the lucky plays break our way, our match ups are perfect, no bad calls in crucial moments... if everything goes perfectly, then we can get xxxx wins.

Every single season people are just super optimistic, failing to realize every other team in the NFL believes they improved too. Failing to realize injuries will happen, a lack of depth will be exposed, referees are going to make bad calls.

This team is going to be bad next season, and it doesn't make me a bad fan or a miserable person... I just see it every single season, y'all call for 10-12 wins when we get 7-8... this season you're optimistic we'll win up to 10 games, really? If everything goes perfectly... this could be an 8 win team... but you're being realistic it's more like 5 wins - that's assuming our coach isn't bad.

No depth on the OL, low expected talent on the entire right side of the OL, question marks on the WR core including injuries and inconsistent play, question marks on TE, question marks on depth at RB... and an entire defense that doesn't scare anyone. An expected solid DT rotation, a great #1 CB, and good safeties... LB's that are up and coming but still not the best and a complete void at CB, depth in the secondary, and at DE.

And contrary to what has become popular belief... Gase was not a bad coach. He was very flawed coaching a very flawed team and made a lot of questionable playcalls but he was actually a pretty good game manager. Some guy responded above how we were in the hunt late in the season despite X X X X X - that actually shows Gase was able to manage a sinking ship better than given credit for (to be clear, I'm not some Gase advocate, but he wasn't a horrible coach, either).

Oh yes, he certainly was. The biggest improvement on the OL will be that they will know WHAT to do. On the majority of plays under Gase, the guys didn’t even know who to block. That’s coaching.

Same on the other side of the ball. So many times the entire defense was out of position because they just didn’t know what to do, i.e., who needs to cover whom. I have high hopes that this will change with the new coaching staff and it will allow the guys to play faster.

Ok so here’s my stupid take on this. Since he isn’t seeing real practice, maybe he’s simply making an observation about how the OL is hanging out together. Bonding along the OL is much more important than in many other position groups.

Getting our hogs in the same room is kinda like coming together, right?

Exactly. Very few of these guys are awful coaches. You might have one example per franchise of a Dallas Thomas-caliber head coach. Gase certainly wasn't close to that level. He is a strange guy whose teams here had extreme tendencies in both directions, like excellent at home but terrible on the road. Lousy point differential but incredibly good won/loss record considering that point differential.

In combination it was a young Crowd coach. We give away a quarterback who basically wasn't pursued by any other team to be its starter, yet somehow we were supposed to win big under Gase with that quarterback, and for only 2 of his 3 seasons, the other occupied by Cutler and Osweiler.

I like the new regime better but I suspect we're in for a poor season in which we come to grips with how difficult it is to win the coin flip games in this league. We were taking that for granted under Gase, who not only won the coin flips games with regularity but also 2-3 per season we had no business winning based on situational math in the 4th quarter.

Barron is very athletic besides his strength. You tube video showing him front squatting 750.7D51EF77-C082-4D6A-94EE-F833E18D5A3F.jpeg
