Why Josh Rosen Has The Making Of A Franchise Qb

His pocket presence was so good he was only sacked 45 times his rookie season! He reads defenses so much better than Tannehill that he threw only 14 interceptions to his 11 touchdowns!

Come on guys! I know there are a lot of reasons to “write off” Rosen’s rookie year for some of you, but the analysis by fans is just ridiculous, as it is 180 degrees opposite of his results on the field. In truth, Tannehill was brought into Miami with the same types of issues Rosen had in AZ, and Tannehill had even less time as a starter in college. People wrote Tannehill off because of his WR roots in college and are elevating Rosen for his college experience.

Truth is, they are essentially the same QB stats wise their rookie year with Tannehill having 1 more touchdown, 1 less interception and 10 fewer sacks. Rosen’s completion percentage was higher, but Tannehill threw for more yards. Reality is, for now at least, Rosen=Tannehill., with Tannehill actually having the edge in some areas.

I know we all want Rosen to succeed, but he has a lot to prove before the word franchise should ever be uttered.

To be fair. Tannehill threw more INTs then TDs his rookie year as well. While being 3 years older. Albiet, more green at the position then Rosen, but he was certainly surrounded by a better cast of players. Although, Im not saying RT had a good cast by any means.

I admit, I've been scarred by Tannehill. Although some will disagree, he had the physical talent and it showed sporadically. What he DIDN'T appear to have was the intellect to play the game. Now, that's not to say he isn't an intelligent guy, but there's a special talent to read Ds and make adjustments on the fly. Tannehill didn't appear to have that.

Which gets me to, I know longer care much for physical ability or his discipline. I want to see him excel pre-snap and in-play. I agree, he was considered a top candidate and he did have the heavy weight of the Cards O, but, . . . so were Bortles and Trubisky. I'm cautiously optimistic, but, as everyone knows, game 16 will tell the tale.

Totally disagree with you that Ryan Tannehill didn't have the intellect to play the game. You realize he's probably more intelligent than Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger in terms of actual IQ and excelled at university. However, Tom and Ben both have good pocket presence in quickly reading and interpreting the game (and Ryan had poor pocket presence - his Achilles heel) and that is what counts.

That is what he meant. Intellect to play the game. He didnt say he wasnt book smart...

All that matters to me is we got our potential "franchise QB" at the right price. We'll see....

It was a good bet. Now it's on staff to develop and evaluate properly.

Don't disagree. My comment was "What he DIDN'T appear to have was the intellect to play the game." The functional phrase is "to play the game." IMO, there is an 'intelligence' to play NFL QB. Few have it. Although Tannehill is quite intelligent, he DOESN'T have the intellect "What he DIDN'T appear to have was the intellect to play the game.." Reading Ds, audibles, changing progression based on the D. That type of stuff. He seemed to lose focus when pressured. He seemed to lack the ability to think in quarters-of-a-second. Yes, he's quite intelligent for the normal person, but that thinking-under-fire? I didn't see it.

I wholeheartedly disagree about Tannehill being surrounded by a better cast his rookie year than Rosen. Fitzgerald (even old) and Dave Johnson were better by far than anything Tanny had to work with (Hartline was our number 1 WR or was it supposed to be Nannee lol). Rosen is a better prospect but let’s not get carried away.

I dont disagree that Rosen's WRs were probably better. However, offensive line isnt close. Running game isnt close. David Johnson may have used to be a better player, but he certainly wasnt with his 3.5 YPC. Tannehill had a dramatically better run game, better offensive line(not that the offensive was great or anything), and a much much much better defense.

Hartline was a route running technician, Devone Bess pre crazy was pretty solid in the slot. Charles Clary and Reggie Bush were pretty good receiving options underneath. Lets not act like RTs weapons were just trash. But I also dont think Rosen's was trash either.

PManning threw a lot of TDs in his rookie season but he threw even more Ints. Over 3 more games he still went 3-13 and that's with the great Marshall Faulk putting up over 2200 all purpose yards. And then there's Steve Young, John Elway and Troy Aikman who impressed even less. How did those work out?

its funny how great this kid is. he was last of the top 4 QBs drafted, had bad rookie stats and the cards dumped him off after just one season. but he's in miami now, he's gonna be a star...

Nobody knows if he will be great, or not.

What we do know, is that he has all the required tools, both physical, and mental.

The questions then become, does he have the drive, and discipline to excell, and are the coaches able to put him in position to live up to his potential?

I'm not going to read too much into his play in AZ last year. First of all, he was a very young rookie, who made rookie mistakes and, hopefully, learned from them. Secondly, AZ was a dysfunctional franchise, both from a talent, and coaching point of reference.

He no sooner learned a system, and built a relationship with the OC, when everything got blown up, and a new system was brought in.

I don't like that Rosen was sacked 45 times last year. Everyone on his line was a back up. So I am very concerned that he doesn't go another season getting beat.
Tannehill was beat up his first 2 seasons as well, and it made him impatient in the pocket.
Where I see good things is that Flores will be running a NE style offense, and that O got the ball out of Brady's hands very quickly. NE's O line also did a good job Keeping Brady protected because of the quick hits.
Lastly, considering what we have watched the past seasons with Tannehill, I believe once we see Rosen making the throws and good decisions, everyone here will be on board. If Rosen is as smart as a lot of the talking heads say he is, he should be able to pick up the playbook quickly.

He was still a top 10 draft pick; by comparison Big Ben was the 3rd QB drafted at 11.

And I'd still rather roll the dice with Rosen than with Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson for sure; we'll see if Darnold can break the USC QB curse and whether his almost interception free last few games was a change agent or just an anomaly over the first part of his season and his college career. So there's that too.
