Dolphins Analyst: Dolphins "haven't Run Like This Since Don Shula"

During the OTA's and Mini Camp a few of the beat writers mentioned how much better, these group of coaches were in comparison to last years group. One reporter specifically noted the defensive coaches, saying, "How much better there were, than in years past". He also said, the entire staff is emphasizing fundamentals, which the threads referenced article talks about. I love the fitness aspect of it, because we've all witnessed at various times since Shula retired, how out of shape some teams looked over the years. Fitness leads to endurance, and in the Florida heat that makes a difference.

The thing that I really respect about Coach Flores is that he put together a truly great staff of assistant coaches. The fact that a few of the really top assistants under Belichick followed Flores down to Florida speaks volumes about how highly regarded he is. Then he gets in there and bangs home mistake free football, team concept and being in incredible condition. This is the Patriot way and if some rubs off, then great. Meanwhile, Josh Rosen falls our way and we have a chance that our QB of the future is in the fold. I've always preached that you've got to have the big 3, GM, Coach & QB and that once achieved you can compete for Conference Titles and finally Super Bowls. Time will tell if we have any of it together but I'm starting to believe just a little bit.
Your fascination with Flores is borderline Comical, how about we Win one Game with him before we pile all This praise his way. I hope he becomes a great Coach for the Dolphins, but I will remain very cautiously optimistic in the meantime.

I can understand how u feel.

Funny how everytime the Fins hire a new coach.... Aw **** it...

None of them have a perfect season under their belt.
Landry has the same rings as Shula. Walsh only has one more. It's not like they're miles ahead of Shula, so I don't get the attitude.

Again as I said before, Rings matter. Shula was great, but coached way to long to only have 2.

Best coach ever had the best qb ever, didn't win. One of those aren't true, which is it?

Well, it's not like we haven't been burned before. I like what Flores has done so far. I like that he didn't have too fragile an ego to bring in high quality assistants. I like that he's a man who doesn't get threatened by people with dissenting opinions. I totally get how you feel because my best friend Wayne get's cautiously optimistic when we're up by 30 with 2 minutes left. He doesn't believe it until it's in the books. I also need for everything to be proven on the field. One thing that might work for us is that there is no tape on this Miami Dolphin team. Nobody has any idea what the Dolphins are gonna do. If we don't beat ourselves who knows how far we can go. Mostly I'm just over the Moon with joy that Gase and Tannehill are gone. Those 2 guys were killing us.

Shula's late career flaw was being too loyal to Olivadotti. He should have replaced him with a decent D coach quickly. We'll never know what could have happened with Marino at the helm still in his prime with a halfway decent D.
True, but they were best buds, played golf together … but that's why we didn't win any Super Bowls during that time.

I'll add two things to what haunted Shula during his final two years:

1. Personnel Moves (Draft & FA) - Let me first say that I love Coach Shula, but with the exception of Tim Bowens (best DT in team history), the 1994 and 1995 drafts were AWFUL, especially 1995. The 1995 free agent signings (Eric Green, Steve Emtman, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Dan McGwire, etc.) were either past their prime, injury-prone, or overpaid underachievers.

2. Discipline - Coach Shula ran too loose a ship in 1995. After getting haircuts, players would walk into meetings 15-20 minutes late with absolutely no repercussions. Coach Shula even fell asleep in several meetings. It was so sad to see such a great man and coach having to endure such a year. I wish he would have retired after the 1994 season.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. The more tired and physically defeated team makes more mistakes as the game goes on. Heat and humidity is an advantage for someone who trains in it over someone who doesn’t.

But could be true... neither likely are.

Eh, Tom Landry only won two and his Cowboys teams were always loaded with talent.

Wasn't there a player that would jerk off in meetings without any repercussions shulas last few years?

Funny enough Matt Patricia basically did the same thing last year for Detroit and the reaction was so bad that Patricia almost got fired after one year. Though the Detroit team is a bunch of self entitled players that have never won..

But yes normally the teams that struggle and bring in new coaches go back to conditioning in an effort to build culture and so that other teams know you arent going to role over. Saban and Sparano both did this well. Philbin and Gase did not but their methods didnt work for various reasons. This approach will only work for Flores if results start showing but it's a good start
