Gauging Josh Rosen Should Be Top Priority In Miami

Who is good on the Dline? Taylor is decent. He showed up for 5 games before he got hurt. Godchaux is average. Wilkins is a rookie. Defensive ends are well average at best. LBs are one of the worst groups in the league. Back half has holes that Im not sure if can overcome with a lack of a pass rush.

Flores want to play 5 and 6 DBs most of the time. Even more than that at times. We got two Dbs that I feel good about in coverage.

Your take is very pessimistic. IMO.

I think most fans have a serious deficiency in rating players who are not OBVIOUS game changers and routinely dismiss too many good (solid) football players simply because they don't make enough "highlight plays."

I think Godchaux and Taylor are OBVIOUS ascending players -- and Wilkins is OBVIOUSLY a very talented rookie. In addition Akeem Spence is a very solid rotational player who brings tuffness and physicality to the line.

I tend to agree our DE position is a legit question -- and I doubt it emerges as an "impact" laden unit. But we have some players to develop and (for now) we have to hope we catch a positive flyer there.

I think we have a number of interesting athletes @LB -- starting with the obvious choice being Baker. Beyond that Van Ginkel has apparently flashed, and the kid from CFL has certainly turned some heads. Yea, I get it. We're not "stacked" at the position as it seems right now. But really -- "worst in the league?" Dude.

DB wise we have some serious talent (X Fitz) and another group of interesting, developing athletes. The wild card in the equation to me is #20. If this staff can get the best from him, and he's physically capable of holding up -- he could be a powerful force in this D. But yea, it's a significant if...

Let's just have an open mind and not unnecessarily condemn the squad before they have a chance to perform.

You actually might be in store for a few positive surprises!

So fitz is 3 and 3 on good/bad days thru camp and rosen is 2 and 4

Not exactly case closed worthy

Yet 3 people are using their twitter accounts and pod cast to do just that. Hmmm interesting.

I agree that developing the young talent on the roster is a very important goal for this year, but I do not agree that the evaluation of Rosen is the most important goal. I would be thrilled if they accomplished your goal, but it is not a must have. By the end of the year, we will know how many of our young players appear to have taken a step forward. I will judge the season based upon those results.

Blue Fin, I agree totally. Rosen has been through a great deal in his short NFL career. His confidence is not at optimum level because he got dumped by Zona and he's being outplayed so far by Fitz. He knows he's behind Fitz and is working hard to catch up. He is doing better of late. But, it's crucial not to put him out there before he's 100% ready because it could do real damage. The last thing he needs is to go out there and look like crap. He needs to rebuild his confidence one pass at a time, one first down at a time and TD and one victory at a time. He can really spin the football so I'm rooting for the kid.

Ryan Fitzpatrick can get us to the playoffs. People dont realize how lucky we got to sign this guy. He is better than Teddy Bridgewater and Tyrod Taylor. People are completely counting this guy out. This guy just got in here and is slinging TD's all over the place.

People forget he is learning at the same time as Rosen. They have been here just this off-season. Fitzpatrick was even out of shape and Rosen still couldn't beat him out.
here we go again...

We're just starting to see what we have in Rosen the Chosen. He's going to be the steal of the last draft. The Cards will soon regret it.

I would prefer Rosen to start. I think he gives us a better chance of securing a top 3 pick.

It’s a stealth tank move by the front office. Waste of a 2nd round pick but gives the fan base hope for a year.

I've got a bad case of preseason fever, i say play Fitz to start, hope for Fitzmagic, and ride it out until Fitztragic dashes playoff hopes. Then proceed with Rosen evaluation.

Points allowed #7
Rush yds allowed #11

I don't know how anyone extrapolates that into being a subpar defense, but hey whatever.

I will admit, that they gave up a lot of passing yards, but that will happen when you are playing soft with decent lead. What matters, in reality, is point given up.
The passing yards allowed are mostly due to the fact that the Pats played 75% of their snaps with a lead(Fins played 48%) not necesrarily playing soft but the sheer volume of pass attempts will do the trick. Flores will have to learn on the fly to play football with a mediocre team.

I was thinking the same so I checked some stats: The Patriots defense ranked...
- ... 2nd in completion % allowed (Dolphins just for comparison purposes 22nd)
- ... 7th in yards per pass attempt (Dolphins 30th)
- ... 7th in opponent passer rating (Dolphins 19th)
- ... 30th in sack percentage (Dolphins 27th)

I find this stat quite interesting: opponents called a pass play 65% of the time against the Patriots while our opponents called a pass play only 52% of the time.

So all the numbers point to what you said, passing yards allowed due to the fact that they played with a lead most of the time.

Those stats also back up my earlier premise that the Pats, as one poster stated, ranked #19 in total defense was an illusion. They were, in reality, a top 10 unit.
