Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

Oronde Gadsden entered the NFL as a 27-year-old rookie wide receiver in 1998 but wasted no time making an impact in Miami, turning his first reception into a 44-yard touchdown pass in his first game. Oronde went on to play six seasons for the Dolphins, many of them alongside O.J., and was known for his circus catches and endearing demeanor. In the Tank, OG discusses his non-traditional route to the National Football League, his special relationship with former teammate and roommate, Lamar Thomas, and helps O.J. and Seth introduce the “Top 5” focusing on the legendary basketball games held at the “Juice Hoop Court.”

After an All-American career at the University of Florida, Channing Crowder spent his entire six-year NFL career (2005-2010) as a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins. Always known for his gregarious personality and outlandish comments, Crowder now entertains listeners as the afternoon drive host of 560 WQAM’s Hochman and Crowder radio show. Channing finally solves one of O.J.’s long-time mysteries, explaining why he chose Florida over Penn State, much to the pleasure of Seth and his Gator roots. Things really get fun, however, when Crowder shares stories that just might reveal why Nick Saban DID indeed leave Miami to become the Alabama Coach.

After showcasing their All-American talent at the University of Florida while helping the Gators capture a National Championship in 2009, they each took first-round trips to the NFL, Maurkice to Pittsburgh in 2010 and of course, Mike to Miami in 2011. A combined nine trips to the Pro Bowl have solidified Team Pouncey as two of the most dominant to do it. Terry Kirby: A F*&%#N Blind Guy?
August 13, 2018
Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

A standout high school football and basketball star, Terry Kirby played both sports at the University of Virginia, finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards. Kirby joined The Fish Tank’s own OJ McDuffie as a member of the Miami Dolphins 1993 draft class when the team utilized their second pick, a third-round choice, on the star running back. After proving to Don Shula that he wasn’t “a blind guy” Terry and OJ were teammates and roommates for three seasons, an experience that led to numerous great memories, several of which are shared in this episode of The Fish Tank. Terry also recalls the unique benefits of being a highly sought after high school football star, and just how far he would go to see his brother play in the 1995 World Series. Another questionable “Top 5” closes out TK’s run in The Tank.

“I Grew Up That Day”: OJ’s Daryl Gardener Story
August 21, 2018
Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

Daryl Gardener was Jimmy Johnson’s first-round draft choice in 1996, Johnson’s first year as the Miami Dolphins head coach. A giant amongst giants, Gardener stood 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed more than 300 pounds, and quickly joined Tim Bowens in the middle of the Dolphins defensive line creating a two-man wrecking crew. On a hot August day in 2001, however, Gardener’s size and strength weren’t enough to prevent O.J. from taking issue with the defensive tackle’s approach to a two-minute drill. Now in The Tank, Juice recalls the conflict, and a moment that changed his life forever in this special training camp edition of our podcast.

September 4, 2018
Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

After an 11-year, successful stint as a private investigator for NFL Security, Stu Weinstein became one of the pioneers for his position as Don Shula made him the Dolphins full-time Director of Security. Stu served 34 years in his post before retiring prior to this season, and during that time, protected the interests of Shula, Dan Marino, Jimmy Johnson and every other player and coach who donned the aqua and orange. You don’t spend nearly four decades handling security for an NFL franchise without some stories to tell, and Stu brings them in droves as he dives into The Tank. From Shula’s postgame meeting with Don Johnson to an epic Dan Marino-Michael Bolton celebrity softball game, and even a parking lot scuffle with Alex Rodriguez, Stu does not disappoint.

Mark Dixon: Hey Look at Me
September 17, 2018

Mark Dixon took the long road to the NFL after an All-American career at Virginia was derailed by injuries. Dixon went undrafted and had stops in Philadelphia, the World League and the CFL before Jimmy Johnson pulled off another personnel magic trick and brought him to Miami in 1998. Dixon instantly became a stalwart on the Dolphins’ offensive line, starting 60 of the 62 games he played in from 1998 – 2003. Mark dives into The Tank with OJ and Seth for his first Dolphins related interview in more than a decade and makes up for lost time. Fish Tank listeners have heard Dixon’s name in nearly every episode, but now the man himself discusses his constant fear of getting cut from the team, lessons learned from playing beside perennial All-Pro Richmond Webb, and battles against Hall of Fame defensive tackles like John Randle and Warren Sapp. Dixon’s off the field memories, however, are what listeners have been waiting to hear and he does not disappoint, giving his side of the road trips to Gainesville with Zach Thomas and Seth, and of course, he dominance on OJ’s basketball court.

Jason Taylor: Change The Narrative
August 5, 2019
Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep

Once considered an undersized project from Akron University, Jason Taylor went on to become the most storied defender in Miami Dolphins history and as dynamic of a defensive playmaker that the National Football League had ever seen. As a pass rusher, Taylor shattered the Dolphins sack record and finished his career ranked sixth (now seventh) all-time in league annals with 139.5 quarterback takedowns. A six-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All Pro, Taylor was named the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and 2007 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. In 2017, his first year of eligibility, he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In The Tank, JT discusses overcoming early questions about his size and toughness, questioning his own ability in his first Jimmy Johnson training camp, and the value of having learned under Nick Saban. He also vividly recalls a brawl with former Fins guard, John Bock, an ill-advised motorcycle ride with defensive tackle Daryl Gardener, his unique relationships with Cam Cameron and Bill Parcells, and the time Michael Jordan visited him during a post-practice meeting. OJ and Seth couldn’t let JT go without addressing his reputation at Juice’s weekly basketball games.
