Source Indicates That The Dolphins And Jakeem Grant Are Close To A 4-year Contract Extension

One thing about this kid -- love his attitude and he supposedly works as hard as anyone in practice etc.

Beyond that -- he's just the type of kid you have to root for and feel good he got a pay day.

The deal looks pretty friendly to me -- and hard to say it's not a good move all around.

Is it me or does $6 mil a year for a part time reciever seem high?

You haven't seen what they've got in mind for him. He's been out a few weeks. Before that, they were using him all over the place.

The guy scores touchdowns. He hasn't seen the field a ton because of bad choices by the previous coaching staff. But he's had his number called 87 times on offense and produced 6 TDs. And he's produced 3 more TDs on 64 kick returns and 50 returnable punts. That's about rate of what Kenny Stills has done on offense, producing 22 TDs on 255 attempts, but Kenny doesn't factor into the return game.

Go through Jakeem's career and you'll see everything he's done from a positive standpoint, including drawing a bunch of penalty flags, and blocking.

I suggest looking at Bobby McCains deal and you will have a better idea on how this is likely structured.

Last rookie year and 2 extension years. This will be more like 3/13. . . With a 2/12 option for the final 2 years.

Basically Miami has him at 5/25 the next 5 years if they want.

When the going rate for the top guys is now 19.25mil(before Julio Jones resets it), 6mil for a guy like Grant isn't that bad of a deal. And the wording says up to 24mil.

So, he'll have to hit some type of targets to activate the entire contract.

It's an ok deal. They are banking on Jakeem improving and being a playmaker all over the place at a consistent level and if he reaches the height of a Sproles . . The money looks pedastrian.

If not, then they cut loose after 3 years and that's it.

They did the exact same thing with McCain. Give the player a chance to improve while having long-term control and if he doesn't you cut bait with a minimal cost.

I must say the WR class next year is so loaded I find it hard to believe with all those draft picks you can't find a solid gadget guy who you would have for 4 years and 3 million for the life of the deal. That's why it's just ok from me.

Good kid, electric, hopefully Grier got this right and kid stays healthy and minimizes the drops.

The good
Hard to find guy's with legit 4.2 speed makes guys who run 4.4 or 4.5 and that's the average defenders speed look slow. Even 4.3 guy's...
Also hard to tackle if he out in the open has lower center gravity and can run thru most tackles.
Teams have to game plan against him in punt and kickoff returns, take it to the house at any time.
Was having a break out year before he was hurt. Mismatch against corners who are large and don't move well.

The bad
Hands, was not the most reliable and has had he share of drops mainly in the return game
Small, QB needs to be more accurate and he gets pounded by much bigger defenders so injury will always be a concern.

Unknown
Team probably has something up it sleeve to get him more involved, shotgun etc

Contract - looks OK to me without knowing guarantee money etc

This is the biggest problem imo. He's so small the QB need a perfect pass every time they go to him. With some of the bigger WR's you need the ball just near them but with Grant is harder to get the ball in there. Once he has the ball in his hands then he can make plays with the best of them tho.

this is a four year EXTENSION according to what I've read. I think of this as 5 years at 24,720,00. That's 4.95m/yr if he plays it out and if he reaches the incentives. The wording "up to $24m" suggests there are going to be some unattainable bonuses.

I think that is pretty fair, assuming the staff plans to utilize him on O.

There’s nothing in his game that looks Darren sproles like. Sproles has a frame for contact. You can’t run this dude inside.

They damn well better come up with ways to get this “playmaker” the ball.

Still nothing on the guaranteed money?

This is more like a really poor mans and I mean really poor mans tyreek Hill. He doesn’t have hills fire hydrant frame either.

And that’s before coming off season ending Achilles tear not even 12 months ago

Them bigger receivers don't run 4.2 either, that TD catch he had against New England were he skied above the DB was a thing of beauty and some of the DB's that tried to tackle him in the open when they could get there hands on him he made them look foolish. Deserves a chance with a different offensive coordinator to make better use of the skills he possesses. IMO
