Differences In Rosen And Tannenhill?

RTs lack of pocket awareness doomed him of a ceiling of mediocrity. He took a lot of sacks where the ball should have beem throwm away. That doesn't seem to be the case for Rosen.

Tanny had a strong arm, and could make every required throw, but he didn't have the instinct for "touch" pass, or throwing his receivers open.

Tannehill wasn’t good enough. Rosen may or may not be good enough.

As of now the only advantage Rosen has is that it’s yet to be determined whether he’s good enough.

A year from now they may well be in the same boat.
Backing up Marcus Mariota?

I always thought Tannehill had too many syllables. Rosen is much tighter. I think
the first names are a push. Tho Josh has a slightly smoother sound IMO.
Then you're into that whole Texas beef VS. So Cal tofu thing. I went veg
9 years ago so I prefer So Cal. Better beaches too!

The dolphins ruined him, from bullygate on they could not figure out the offensive line. His QB coaches were nepotism hires to the infinite degree. Nobody ever tried to help him put it together. Gase then got through to him but the injuries came and so went Ryan tannehill.

I'll never forget when he played rodgers, Peyton and big Ben and went blow for blow only for the defense to suck. It's unfortunate, but we all needed to move on.

Note: The organization should have moved on after Jay Cutler year as it was clear the team was crumbling

  1. Pocket presence is the big one, as OP mentioned, but it is significant.
  2. Natural feel for the position. RT didn't look comfortable out there and it didn't get any better year after year like I thought it might.
  3. Accuracy. I'd argue that Rosen can make more "big time throws" and locate the ball in more catchable positions that allow the receivers to make a play.
  4. Attitude. Right now, I'd argue Rosen has a worse attitude than RT ever did, but it looks like this is changing. I'm glad Flores mentioned body language specifically. He could have quickly turned into Jay Cutler out there if he didn't make adjustments.
  5. Upside - Rosen has more potential than Tannehill does. RT is a career back-up at this point but I'd be willing to bet Rosen will end up being a better qb than RT was. Question is, how long do we give him? We gave RT 8 years...

As far as results being the QB of the Miami Dolphins, at this point in Rosens career I would call it a tie.

Rosen's awareness and feel for pressure is much better than Tannehill's was. His accuracy is also better. A more natural thrower. And his overall feel for the position is better. Tannehill never improved the way I had hoped, although, he did improve, his long ball over time, but nothing else seemed to follow. In the few short months, with Miami, Rosen looks a lot better than his time with Arizona. Much improved, inspite of the putrid Offensive Line both teams field.

That AZ coaching staff was a total fiasco. I'm sure Flores and O'shea spent the first couple weeks just undoing what had been done.

1. Pocket presence / ability to extend plays => advantage Rosen. All of RTs athleticism counted for squat in this department. He did run the Read Option nicely and make some plays that showed off his athletic ability. But his athleticism was over hyped as he didn’t play like an athletic QB due to point no 1. When I think athletic QB I think Wilson, Newton, Mahomes etc. Ryan was no where near those guys. Rosen “looks” more athletic than RT because of how he uses his feet.

2. Delivering the ball on time - push. Both are late on their timing throws. They don’t throw guys open though Rosen does it a bit more per game than RT. RT needed to see the WR open before tossing it. After years of watching Marino we know what “good” looks like. RT wasn’t that. Rosen could get better at this but it’s the biggest red flag for me right now.

3. Game management - advantage Rosen. Just based off of that one hard count. RT never did things like that. He couldn’t run the hurry up. Rosen might suck at it too for all I know but so far I think he gets the O in better ryhtm than RT.

4. Leadership - Push. Ryan is a great guy but not sure he commanded respect of his teammates the way a QB needs to. By all accounts Rosen (or was in college) is a total douche so this should be fun.

5. Intangibles - advantage Rosen. Ryan has none. He never willed a team to victory. Or a 1st down at a key time. No moxie. Matt Moore was superior in that regard. Ryan was not a “gamer”. He never rose up when the team needed him - like in every December. Rosen is just more natural playing the position and has some “it” stuff going that you just can’t teach. RT has no “it” / total robot.

6. Arm strength - push. They both have cannons. RT might have a stronger arm but if so the diff is so negligible it doesn’t matter.

7. Touch / ball placement - Rosen by a country mile. RT couldn’t throw a fade to save his life. It was embarrassing. He couldn’t drop the ball in like what we saw Rosen do w Ford last night. He was able to throw mid range darts for sure. But lay a ball up and drop it in the basket - no way.

Rosen still may wind up not being good but he has more upside than Tanny did coming out of college. And as others have pointed out, RT didn’t improve that much over the years. Some of it may have had to do w the way they just made him the starter after one of the worst Pre seasons in the history of QB play. I still laugh when I recall Philbin saying “he earned it”. Yeah, w a 35 QBR or something like that. The kid was a project and they should have treated him as such. They rushed him and ruined him.

PS Ryan Tannehill is one of the best human beings you’ll ever meet. Amazing person.

And that is why this coaching staff may be what's best for the organization. They came from NE and apparently NE liked Rosen. It may take some more time, for him to reach his enormous potential. But Rosen, does look completely different than last year.
