I think it is fair to say that the number one concern, or primary focus for the Dolphins, is they need to reduce penalties. Giving new sets of downs to teams can be as bad as turnovers and have been. I believe that is the key to Buffalo and Tampa. The second game because they have to learn to sustain it, then it will have some carry over in future weeks as other needs arise.

Although the stats seem low in some performance areas, there are positive signs, so far, everywhere on the team, but penalties. Because many players have contributed, it is a team issue they need to commit to ending.

If you see the penalites go significantly down this week after the bye, I think the Saban buzz will get louder.

I have read a bunch of the posts for Keys to Beating Buffalo and I thought this would have been discussed more. Anyone agree? It has surely been our biggest problem this year and has cost us a division loss IMO. It also gave The Pathers a healthy dose of chances and was steady poor throughout preseason.

very true. even as poor as we played last year....without all the penalties we would have wound up 7-9 or so in my opinion. It needs to be cleaned up. games are so close nowadays that giving up 138 yards in penalties simply isn't acceptable.

The thing is we have been winning with a rediculous amount of penalties. I almost take it as a given that as a team the penalties will get better. It couldn't get much worse.

I think the primary concern at this point would be the secondary. I think penalties are much easier to fix than poor play from the CB positions.

thats true, but even taylor has 3 offside penalties and the wrs have illegal formation and false start penalties

penalties indicate lack of discipline. saban has said that he's taught the players what to do and how to do it, so its up to them now. hes trying to make them accountable, but it hasnt worked yet

penalties also show that a team isn't used to the system yet. The "not used to the system" penalties show up before the snap of the ball.

i dont buy that at all. wrs, talyor and the o-line know not to go untill the ball is snapped

Well, I agree with you somewhat, but what else could it be? Saban is just the type of coach that wont tolerate penalties so you know that he and his staff is doing everything expected during the week to solve this, and yet it got worse from game 1 to game 3. Is it the players? The new systems? The new motivation and intensity of the players?

i mentioned in my first post that saban has said that the coaches have done their job and its up to the players to execute and stay focused.

so he doesnt appear to be the kind of coach who gives his players lashings for commiting penalties. we are yet to see this approach be effective, although it may in the end

most of these penalties are very stupid, esp. taylor. he forced the D to make 5 stands at the goal line and if denver punched the last try in, the complexion of the game could have totally different

whats the cause? who knows. is it lack of detail and preparation or are they too eager and anxious to make plays?

if its the latter, then they may be why saban has a somewhat hands-off approach

I hadnt heard Saban say that but I dont doubt he did. I do remember him taking some blame for the Jets loss, so who knows where the blame truly lies right now.

I was surprised by Taylors offside calls the most. For him it seems like he's simply overeager. I agree with you that a lot of these penalties have been "stupid," particularly Madison's personal foul against Carolina.

I think your right about the "hands-off" approach Saban may be taking because didnt he say something to the effect that there are certain penalties that although are not good for the team, do show the players are being aggressive?

All in all I do trust Saban and the insane amout of coaches on his staff to fix this problem over time. I dont think we'll see a complete elimination of too many penalties right away, but I think by week 10 this should be a non-issue (I hope).

yep! thats why we lost to the Jets. The penalties killed us all day. As biased as the refs were, I dont think that crap will happen as much but it is easier to commit penalties while on the road.

I totally agree...(and SAM, the OL this means you !!)

We aren't a good enough team to overcome these penalties all the time. To give Sam a little credit, one of the interference calls on him last week was very weak, but he needs to play with more composure than he has shown. He has been responsible for 5 first downs via penalties. JT is quick but trying to be too quick and has given our opponents 2 first downs. The OL, well it's been said...too many 3 and 2's turned into 3rd and 7...

I'm a little surprised that Saban hasn't gone ballistic on this although, we're not in the meeting rooms in Davie, so it could be...but this is not a Saban trait and I realize our schemes are new to most of the players, etc...I can't figure out why this problem hasn't been squashed....we'll see...

Saban has a philosiphy of 100yrds in penalties equals 7 points on the board. that means for the most part the dolphins have given them a touchdown via penalty in almost every game. It needs to be stopped but again as saban says " we have to find a way to overcome the negative" even if its one play or one penalty

Hasn't worked yet is a little silly... It is a work in progress.

Taylor is playing a new position and getting adjusted accordingly... The offense is adjusting. I think this week after the BYE we should definetly see a decrease in penalties. They know that the penalties are shooting themselves in the foot...

Ya I don't get how the guy snaping the ball can false start either. That has notyhing to do with the system as far as I can tell.

Madisons personal foul has nothing to do with the system.
We make a lot of excusses for the Dolphins sometimes.

Simple, they need to commit to stopping the penalties.
