We only have 14 turnovers all year in 16 games do the math this Defense is just not getting it done. Not saying offense is playing much better but when we cannot win the turnover battle makes it super hard to win. Defense is constantly out of position and aside from Holland, Seiler, kader, and Wilkins this is just bad defense seems to have zero accountability.

We need to move away from the cover 0, man heavy scheme. We don’t have good corners but we have a great front 4. They need to be able to get pressure and let us play more zone behind it.

Generally speaking, creating turnovers is not a skill and is more based on luck. Teams that force a lot of turnovers generally force much less the following year and vice versa.
Turnovers are not luck. Not over a 17 game season. It’s about contested balls. Sacks and strips. Creating havoc. Shortening passing windows. Gang tackling. Effort and determination. Ball hawking.

Recovering fumbles, yes. Forcing fumbles and intercepting passes not so much.

The fact that a team forcing a lot of turnovers one year forcing less the next is regression to the mean, not luck. Teams that play at a high rate are less likely to play at that high rate the next year not because of luck but because they don't have room to go up, just down.

“An early finding of NFL analytics is that turnovers are largely a function of luck.”

Of course there are some players that are better than others at forcing (and minimizing) turnovers, which is why I said “generally speaking”. But the stats and studies back up my original statement that they are more based on luck.

They built a defense scheme around good to great corners. Jones never played this year and Howard has been dinged up too.
The D was also built to play with a lead. That enables them to be more aggressive and force opponents into making mistakes.

Unfortunately, we have been struggling in that department of late.

The great Bucs defenses of the Tony Dungy era in Tampa were not of luck. They created lots of turnovers because of how Monty Kiffin coached them to attack and swarm the football.

Also we are down on turnovers because for 20 years our previous head scout and now GM has failed to draft or sign 1 legit badass libebacker.

The defense is terrible. It has been obvious since about Week 3 that our off-ball linebackers suck, that our secondary depth is non-existent, and that our defensive line and edge rushers are the strength of the team. Yet we continue to play man-heavy packages with 5 defensive backs and 2 stand-up linebackers on every single down only to be shocked when the pu pu platter of Keion Crossen and Noah Igbinoghene and Eric Rowe and Verone McKinley can’t hang with NFL receivers, and Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts and Duke Riley continually get their lunch eaten by NFL RBs and TEs.

An even moderately competent defensive coordinator would’ve switched to a zone heavy 5-1-5 defense months ago and would’ve at least auditioned Tindall to see if he could suck out loud a little less than Baker.

We need to fire Boyer this off-season. Not one of our rotational ILBs should be back. And we need another competent safety or two.

Here's where their defense ranked by turnovers forced over that era.

Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin
1996: 17/30
1997: 19/30
1998: 19/30
1999: 14/31
2000: 4/31
2001: 2/31
Average: 13th

Monte Kiffin
2002: 3/32
2003: 9/32
2004: 21/32
2005: 11/32
2006: 30/32
2007: 3/32
2008: 5/32
Average: 12th

They had some good rankings, average rankings and bad rankings. Overall they were pretty much middle of the pack. So again, generally speaking, turnovers are based on luck.

Xavien Howard leads the NFL in INTs over the last 3 seasons and contributed 1 INT this season and it was an extremely selfish one. He’s dropped about 5.
At least he’s been in position to make them. I hope his hands aren’t going. I remember when Madison’s hands seemed to turn to stone. He was still good but at some point he began dropping would be picks - one of them wound up being a TD vs the Jets that started the Monday night miracle comeback. Ugh

I don’t mean to go high Jack the thread, but although I have many issues with this team, 1 constant issue that drives me crazy (and this was even happening while the phins were winning is:
With all the pre snap movement the Dolphins have, why in the hell do we break the huddle so late in the play clock? Every single game I’m have a panic attack almost every snap. You have multiple guys shifting and moving ect. I swear at least once a game we get a HUGE illegal motion called on a big play. And, my opinion is it’s because we break the huddle with 10-12 seconds left, then do all this shifting and the ball is snapped almost every single play at 1 second left no matter who the QB is. I’m not an NFL coach, but if I notice this and freak out from my couch, why trained NFL people don’t notice this an make it better? No wonder there is so much pressure all the time. We snap the ball with 1 sec left on the play clock more than not. It’s so frustrating and predict labor to the opposing D. Feel free to move To move this to any thread.
