In celebration of its 125th anniversary, Sporting News will be settling the score on The Great Sports Debates. This month, the publication puts to rest the argument of the greatest NFL teams of all time, asking an All-Star panel of current and former players, coaches and executives to cast their votes. The 17-0 1972 Miami Dolphins came out on top. Leading the league in total offense (359.7 ypg), scoring offense (27.5 ppg), total defense (235.5 ypg) and scoring defense (12.2 ppg), Coach Don Shula's '72 Dolphins are the only team in league history to achieve a perfect season.

For those who are hopping on another team´s bus...THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DOLPHAN!!!

that's right **** the plastic curtain, 85 cubs, and the 07 cheatriots

The 72 Fins cannot be matched. They will always be #1 to those with a brain.
To somehow create a argument to place another team with losses above the 72 Fins is ridiculous.

id feel better if it was sports illustrated or somebody big but ill take it

Duh. I mean, if you're going to base QB greatness on team success . . . you should probably measure a team greatness by team success.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins were the first team to execute a perfect regular season in the modern, post-Merger NFL. They are the only team in NFL history to go undefeated in the regular season and postseason.
An enduring controversy is that the 1972 Dolphins played a soft schedule not possible under the current scheduling formula. Prior to the implementation of position scheduling in 1978, opponents were set by the NFL on a rotating basis. Statistically, the Dolphin’s 1972 schedule was one of the weakest played by any team in many years. Their regular-season opponents had an aggregate winning percentage of .396 and only two opponents had winning records that year (both were 8-6).

Only one team in NFL history had a perfect season, the 1972 Fins is never the "sexy" pick because we didnt do it with a flashy offense and a big name filled defense. But thats fine by me, because we still did it and even the most explosive offense the NFL has ever seen paired with a known "genius" at coach still fell short. Yet, the 72 Fins still did it.

Sexy pick or not, its the only one that can be justified as a PERFECT answer. ;)

Sucks when this is the only thing we have to fall back on.

Nice to see the undefeated team at #1! I think most of that teams players will say the `73 team was better, even though they had two losses. Plus, they dominated in their SB win, the `72 team did not. It`s ridiculous the `73 team is not on the list!
