Cowboys fan here...

I was watching the 1973 Super Bowl (Dolphins / Redskins) on the NFL network yesterday and noticed something about the uniforms I thought was a bit odd. Most of the Dolphins players were wearing jerseys with stripes on the sleeves, but a few (Greise, Csonka and a defensive player, to name a few) were wearing stripeless jerseys. Can anyone provide some insight on why that may have occurred? Yes, I realize that was 35 years ago, but it made me curious because that wouldn't happen in today's NFL.

Congrats on keeping the record intact (72 Dolphins, only perfect team in NFL history). Those cheating [mod]please do not circumvent the profanity filter[/mod] Pats got what they deserved. If only Eli had pulled up and thrown a TD pass instead of taking a knee on that last second play. The Pats had been running up the score on everyone all season...it would have been so sweet to see the same thing happen to them.

Thank you! and I am only 20 so i don't know what the jerseys were all about.

They might have been cut off or tied in underneath so no one could grab them by the sleves.

I thought that was the case, but only lineman tie their jerseys down tight... Every player on both teams, regardless of position, had full sleeves blowing in the wind. I paused the DVR to get a good look and it appeared the jersey was manufactured that way. In one still the sleeve was cuffed at the bottom like a t-shirt.

Anyway, I was just curious. I like watching the old games and seeing how much things have changed over the years. Csonka's facemask was classic...I remember wanting a facemask like that when I played pee wee football back in the 70's. Good times...

Sorry about the filter thing, mods. It won't happen again.

No, they actually had 2 styles of jerseys. The stripes were the newer ones, the ones without stripes the older style. And if you happen to see it again, you'll also notice that the numbers on the jerseys are different, some being thicker than others. And not just that, if you look a Mercury Morris, his numbers aren't even the same on the Jersey! There's a different font for the 22 on the back then there is on the front.

I don't remember where I recall this, but I believe those jersey inconsistencies led to the NFL demanding everyone look, uh, "uniform".
