----HOLIDAY THREAD-------

So, I was sitting here doing some reading on this beautiful Independence Day, and I just had to let the following thoughts sink in.

40 years since a Super Bowl victory. (1973)

29 years since a Super Bowl appearance (1984)

40 years. 29 years. Put that to comparison to other South Florida sports.

- The Marlins, who have been in existence since 1993, have already won two World Series (1997, 2003).
- The Heat, who have been in existence since 1988, have already won three NBA Finals (2006, 2012, 2013).

To put this in perspective, the last time the Miami Dolphins made a Super Bowl appearance :

- Pres Reagan (R) landslide (won 49 states) re-election over Mondale (D)
- Average cost of a gallon of gas : $1.10
- Billboard's Hottest songs : Like a Virgin by Madonna; Jump by Van Halen; What's Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner; When Doves Cry by Prince
- The Terminator was released in theaters
- and so was Beverly Hills Cop and The Karate Kid
- Marvin Gaye was shot and killed
- Average cost of a new home : $86,730
- Movie Ticket : $2.50
- A brand new Dodge Ram : $8,995.00
- The Soviet Union (USSR) boycotts the Los Angeles Olympics
- The first Apple Macintosh goes on sale
- A young Michael Jackson is burned during filming of a Pepsi commercial
- Miss Elizabeth & Macho Man Randy Savage wed
- Vanessa Williams is asked to give up her Miss America crown

The Dolphins have 1 playoff appearance in 12 years (2008).

We have become a joke.

We suck. Let's hope Philbin can turn things around, soon.

PRONTO!

That's pretty mind blowing when you look at all that has happened in those years. I think we are on the up right now. I think Philbin and Tanny will turn this around.

Wow! Pretty sad when you look at it like that. The only thing that I can say to make me feel better is that the Jets go further back. The moon landing is the last time the Jets appeared in the Super Bowl.

It's a long time and shows, to a point, how difficult it is to get there. If you look at the NFL, there are 32 teams with 16 in each conference. The odds then, should be a super bowl appearance every 16 years. We know it doesn't work that way, but those are realistic expectations.

It is not enough to just have a great coach. You must also have a great GM. It took both Don Shula and Joe Thomas to win Superbowls. Joe Thomas was one of the best general managers in NFL history. This is why I am so despondent over the Dolphins' current state. While Joe Philbin does somewhat remind me of a young Don Shula, we haven't had a Joe Thomas caliber GM since he left. Until we get one we will continue to flounder.

It's also been 20 seasons since this team last made it to the AFC championship (i.e. 20 seasons without winning a divisional playoff game).

And 22 seasons since this team last won more than 11 games in the regular season.

And yet, we're still the greatest sports franchise in the history of ever.
