With Jake Long making it 2 for 2 in Pro Bowl selections, I was curious to see how other former first overall picks have fared when it comes to making the All Star game. Below is the first overall draft picks over the past 10 years. The number to the far right is the total number of times the individual has been selected to the Pro Bowl in their career(these numbers include the 2010 team that was announced today).

2009: Matthew Stafford - 0
2008: Jake Long - 2
2007: JaMarcus Russell - 0
2006: Mario Williams - 2
2005: Alex Smith - 0
2004: Eli Manning - 1
2003: Carson Palmer - 2
2002: David Carr - 0
2001: Michael Vick - 3
2000: Courtney Brown - 0

As you can see, the first overall pick is a dangerous position to be in and one that seems to have a 50% or lower chance of actually working out. I know that for the most part the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest, (Hence Le'Ron McClain over Polite), but that doesn't always mean the best players don't go. The first overall pick is a "name" player but as you can see only five of the past ten picks have gone to the Pro Bowl.

For a year to be very bad and to be "stuck" with the first overall pick, it appears Miami made out very good. First Overall picks seem to bust more then boom during their careers, but it does indeed seem like we got a boom player.

Jake Long is no longer just a Pro Bowl LT. He is now a Multi-Pro Bowl LT and in my book an elite NFL player. Thank goodness we struck Gold with Long.

Nublar,

No question man. Jake Long is the real deal and I wasn't too happy when we took him as I had Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey slated there but wow he has turned out to be something special. I am starting to but this Michigan thing with Jake Long and Chad Henne and one option to continue the trend would be to sign Braylon Edwards and Jason Avant in free agency. Give Henne some familiar faces; Braylon probably won't make it out of New York but I think there is a better chance he becomes available than say Miles Austin, Brandon Marshall, or Vincent Jackson.

No Loushaka Polite is robbery. Players like Dwight Freeney, Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins, and even Champ Bailey shouldn't be there this season. They have either battled injury or not played to that type of level. Vontae Davis has out-played Champ Bailey

Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis lead in the AFC in sacks. They both deserved to be on the team.

Champ Bailey had one hell of a year, only person you could make a slight argument over him would be Leon Hall, and even that would've been debateable.

Ed Reed is always a given, but yeah this year he shouldn't, but they made up for that by acknowleging Jarius Byrd imo.

I'm more upset about McClain over Polite than anything, but other than that no Dolphins other than Long making it doesn't upset me.

As for Jake Long, I wasn't on this board when he was drafted, but I actually was very high on him when he was drafted. Love that he has panned out like he was expected to be. He had early season troubles, but he has been Mr.Consistant for the most part since he joined the Fins.

He was a great pick, and the best part was he allowed us to move Vernon Carey to RT, where he has been awesome.

Indeed.

Vernon Carey was miscast as a LT when he had to fill in during 2006 (?) and yet he still played admirably, in my opinion. He is just fantastic at RT, though. He is the consumate mauler, and coupled with Long (and Smiley, who is just nasty when pulling) they give us a huge boost in the running game. We could seriously consider starting Hilliard and he could give us 5-6 yards a pop, the way these guys block.

Just a consolidating force in the OL, which far and away balances his 1st overall status.

its an every other year thing except Manning breaks that pattern starting with 2000 or Palmer breaks it if you start in 2009

Jake long is the type of player who's going to be in like 12 pro bowls, 12 all pro selections, NFL MVP, and the hall of fame. The man is a machine thirsty for d-linemen blood.

They call him Wonderboy or Boy Wonder or whatever for a reason.

Bit harsh on Bailey IMO, who had a fantastic game on Sunday against probably the most explosive receiver in football at the moment, DeSean Jackson. Totally shut Jackson down in the 2nd half.
