Those proclaiming the decision to go for the 2 point conversion as the "right" decision are flat out WRONG. The outcome of this game provides proof as to why.
You have to consider how much time is left in the game. If the decision came with little time left in the 4th quarter (which means limited possessions remaining), it becomes a better call. However, with 14:54 still to go, it is WAY to early to start chasing points as there is a lot of time for both teams to score several times. Because of that, you continue to kick extra points. You don't go for 2 until you have to or if time / possessions are a factor. Anybody that believes time / possessions were a factor with essentially an entire quarter still to play and only a 12-point lead are flat out crazy. The correct decision was to kick the extra point.
Now, while naysayers may say that kicking the extra point didn't in any way guarantee a victory, it does increase the odds of actually winning the game. Using this game as an example, the Broncos would have had to convert two 2-pt conversions in order to tie. While they could have done it, the percentages were much lower.
Lastly, let's suppose Sparano made the correct decision and kicked the extra point but that they never got the last FG (something that wouldn't have been on Sparano's mind when he made the decision). It is not out of the realm that the Broncos could have kicked 2 FG's to go along with a TD to tie the game. 14:54 is certainly enough time for that to occur. So the argument that Sparano wanted a 14-point lead because the Broncos wouldn't have enough time for 2 FG's and a TD is totally flawed.
Face it. Kicking the XP was statistically the correct thing to do. That's exactly why former Head Coaches Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy questioned it, along with several others in the CBS/Fox studios.
