This game was really heartbreaking. The complete implosion that I thought we had put behind us reared its ugly head today again. Jacksonville showed we werent out of the woods, Buffalo showed we still dont have a map. Looking over the roster for 2007 we still have half an offense to replace and half a defense plus a kicker. Add a offensive coordinator who is not a long term answer and a GM who will probably be gone after 2007.

Looking forward the positions we absolutely have to get addressed for 2007 to make the playoffs are

FB Doesnt seem like a critical position but we need an upgrade. I really hope Eckel is it but if he isnt we need to get one

LOT - Damien is simply too low on the food chain to be starting for us at that position. He would be great to have as a reserve but he is frightening as a starter. He has too many games where he is eaten up. Toledo might be an answer but I dont think we can risk 2007 on that. Either through draft or free agency we need to get one and I think draft is the better option though it may not pay dividends in 2007 which is very risky for our playoff chances

OG or C - Personally I would prefer a top notch center allowing us to move Hadnot to his better position of Guard. The draft and free agnecy are loaded with guards and it shouldnt be hard to get one if we decide to keep Hadnot at Center

These two upgrades would allow us to ride out another year with Harrington or Culpepper which I feel need to be upgraded but only through the draft and for 2008. If we can get Brian Brohm we should but we shouldnt expect anything until 2008. An improved Oline will get us the time needed to open up the playbook with whoever is our QB and that will translate to better QB play and better RB play.

We need better receivers but its not critical for 2007 and a playoff run but for 2008 it will be

OLB- Donnie Spragan needs to go. There are many po9ssibilities both draft and free aganecy and we must get one

CB - We really need a shut down corner who knows how to play a ball thats in the air and can actually get interceptions. If we go free agency they're expensive if we go draft Saban's system might make that CB look lost for half the year

K I dont care if we address it with a premium player but we need to have somebody in camp who can push Olindo. We simply cant have a kicker who cant be trusted on.

The positions I just mentioned are critical for 2007 (LOT, C/OG, FB, OLB, CB, K)
We absolutely must upgrade these areas. If we do we're in the playoffs next year.

For 2008, which I believe will be our shot at a SuperBowl we have many more areas to address

QB- We really should target Brian Brohm this year for hopes he's ready to go in 2008. Daunte and Harrington may improve beyond our wildest draems but we cant afford to take the chance. If they do great. We'll have a seasoned QB in 2008. If not its time for the young gun. Not critical for 2007 but absolutely for 2008

WR - We dont have a difference maker. We have a bunch of number 2s and number 3s. We need one superstar. With a killer Run game and improved oline play its not as critical for 2007 but for a SuperBowl run we need a superstar

TE - There is simply something wrong with Mcmichael's character. He doesnt come across as a hardcore TE. There's no killer instinct there. Once again its not critical for 2007 but by 2008 we better have someone with the demeanor to play the position

OT/OG - Need to add depth in 2008 for injuries

DE - We need to start adding this year probably but its not critical for 2007. It will be for 2008

DT - Same as above

MLB - The passing of the torch from Zach to whoever has to take place. If its Crowder we need to replace another OLB

DB - Keep adding depth

By 2008 we need to replace Mularkey, possibly with Linehan if he's gone from St Louis by then. I'm not averse to keeping him for 2007 (I dont like him but for continuity's sake I could see it)

GM Mueller will probably be gone and we will need to get a top notch talent evaluator in here. This is the mosty important position for any team aspiring to SuperBowl dreams

I agree entirely with your upgrades for 2007, but I'm not so sure about the 2008 moves.

didnt you just name basically every position?

RB and Punter are fine past 2009. Alot of the upgrades, especially 2008 are for depth and not necessarily for starters. 2007 there arent that many that we need to try to upgrade but actually getting them all will be tough. If we get 4 we'll be in good shape for 2007. 2007 upgrades are fatal flaws. 2008 are trying to get us to a SuperBowl level assuming we fill the 2007 upgrades

Alot of the 2008 moves are based on putting certain players on notice. We can get by for one more year with some of them but some of them will have to go. At some point we need better production and not the promise of talent

I agree with most of your assessments however... WR is quietly becoming a top 2-3 priority. We have ENTIRELY TOO many drops. We do not have a speed receiver and no one that scares D-coordinators. That's a major reason why the Bills were putting 9 men in the box. We have to address WR, OL, OLB in 07. A rookie QB in 08 or 07. I am not optimistic about C-Pep's return.

Changing the GM won't help if we don't let them do their job.

It's amazing how a well constructed draft changes a team. Phins could have drafted a top defensive player in 2005 instead of RB and could have picked up Gore in the 2nd or 3rd rd and they would be a better team. I know it's hindsight, but there are some GM's who don't believe in using a top 5 pick on a running back due to the wear and tear they get.

Randy Mueller is a top notch talent evaluator. Problem is that Saban isn't exactly allowing him to do his job. I like Saban as a coach, but I'd rather have a good GM (like Mueller) handling the draft and being in charge of personnel control. You can get a new one, sure, but it wouldn't be easy to find a better one - and even if you managed to that, he wouldn't do you much good if Saban has the last word on all decisions.

yeah but we can't blame mueller for that as he was not around back then. i'm all for letting mularkey go after this year as the play calling yesterday was awful. mueller though i beleives needs a few years, for us to know if he's really doing a good job. what could've been had we drafted merriman and gore, even though no one new they'd turn out to be the monsters they are today.

As far as I know, Mueller wasn't exactly sold on Ronnie Brown. That was Saban's call. While I agree that there wasn't really much choice (figures that we get the #2 pick with one of the worst draft classes in the last decade), I actually think that Edwards would have been the better pick. But of course, that's hindsight again ...

Mueller was not our GM during the drafting of Ronnie Brown, as far as i know?

He wasn't. But I've read (damned if I remember where) that he wasn't completely convinced of Brown as a #2 pick when he came in. And I tend to agree. Although there really wasn't a lot of talent in the top 10 of this draft, Ronnie Brown - as much as I like him - isn't exactly the second coming of LT. And that's about the only RB I'd spend that high a draft pick for.
