Each year it is the GM's role, to maximise within the salary cap, the talent on his roster. I thought it would be interesting to now view the players let go against the players brought in or re-signed, along with their avg. salary cap numbers (did not include Jake Long as he was rumoured to want out).

Brought in

Mike Wallace-$12m, Dannell Ellerbe-$7m, Phillip Wheeler-$5m, Dustin Keller-$4.25m, Brent Grimes-$5.5m, Brandon Gibson $3.25m

Re-signed

Randy Starks-$8.45m, Brian Hartline-$6m, Chris Clemons-$2.75, Matt Moore-$4m

Let go

Anthony Fasano-$4m, Sean Smith-$5.5m, Karlos Dansby-$2.25m, Kevin Burnett-$2.75m, Reggie Bush-$4m, Devone Bess-$3m

I know hindsight is every man's dream, but it is a way of looking back and judging if correct decisions were made.

Just taking into account the change at LB. Dansby & Burnett are avg. $5m/yr, while Ellerbe & Wheeler are on $12m/yr. Combined, Dansby & Burnett have more tackles, sacks, interceptions and forced fumbles.

When you take into account, we spent on avg. approx. $37m on new signings and the players let go, now have contracts totalling approx. just $21.5m, how would you in hindsight have handled Free Agency and do you believe Jeff Ireland maximised the opportunity to improve?

Ireland has done and will do a GREAT job of bringing in enough medicore talent to keep you continually at 8-8...
It is,what it is.

Nothing against you OP, but Ireland is dead to me. I don't need convincing that he sucks and his defenders are not knowledgeable. if he isn't gone after the season, it's the owner I must question.

The excitement of bringing in new players outweighs familiarity, but when you look at it, surely the player already on your roster has an head start on most new signings.

I would have kept all the Free Agents mentioned, Fasano, Bush, Smith, Bess, Dansby & Burnett. Even though I wasnt a massive fan of Smith, he was a good corner, 26 and rarely inured.

I would never give out long term contracts to newly acquired Free Agents, Thus I would have only signed, Grimes & Keller.

In draft I would go for players who drop due to combine results or other reason i.e Bjoern Werner, Star Lotulelei, Jarvis Jones, Menelik Watson, Larry Warford, Keenan Allen DeMontre Moore, Jesse Williams, Quinton Patton.

I would have wanted O'line with first pick but no value, so prob would have chosen, Werner. I would prefer Lotulelei or Jarvis Jones, but DE more of a need and Werner a better fit.

2nd round I would def have chosen Menelik Watson and then Keenan Allen.

3rd round I would hate to pass on Moore, but with Werner, I would go for two guys who dropped, Jesse Williams DT & WR Quinton Patton.

Hindsight lol

We spent a ton of money in order to assure ourselves a mediocre season. Letting Bush walk at $4MM was the worst move of all. We overpaid for Wheeler and Ellerbe - so what do we do about them in a year when they are crushing the cap? No Ireland blows and just isn't capable of building a winner.

Maybe in hindsight we keep Dansby and Burnett. Definite upgrades however are Clay over Fasano and Gibson over Bess.

we needed to get more athletic than dansby and burnett in this scheme so im fine with the move. the problem is the 2 guys brought in, though more athletic are not better football players.

I don't need hindsight to know that not trading for B.Albert was a huge mistake....letting Bush go is a close second

Agreed. I didnt like Dansby or Burnett as they were so slow in coverage. Wheeler is athletic, he just sucks. Ellerbe isnt as athletic.

No Tackles? Trade up to draft a DE! RB injured? Sign a DT! It's the Jeff Ireland way!

Fail.

Forward.

Faster.
