The Dolphins have to make decisions on resigning 4 players from the 2014 draft in the next few weeks

Ja'Waun James
Jarvis Landry (franchise tag)
Walt Aikens
Terrence Fede

I thought it would be interesting to go back the previous 10 years and see how the team fared and how many were resigned, traded and released. Below is the data that I complied.

We drafted 78 players from 2004 thru 2013
41 were released before reaching a second contract
21 went to other teams thru free agency
10 were resigned to second contracts by Dolphins
6 were traded to other teams (4th round best compensation)

Not a very good track record of drafting or retaining talent. Hopefully it changes going forward.

Lots of interesting draft picks in there.

You really see at how bad we were drafting between 04-07...that's one of the things that really set us back. Some really bad choices there, some real reaches.

The drafts afterwards, some reaches, but some not so bad choices, either, but some real ugly ones as well. Mediocre, I suppose.

The one thing I noticed is the buzzard's luck we have had recently even when we do draft well. Each of our last 4 resigns has been injured right after getting paid. That doesn't help either.

When you combine poor drafting which in turn equates to a lack of quality resigns . . . You get 2 playoff visits and 0 playoff wins in the last 16 years.

It's curious than that people want to let players like Landry walk because we can "easily draft a replacement" as if our track record in the draft is not what it is.

That's some depressing **** right there.

Barren landscape, that's for sure. The 2005/2006 drafts were basically an "SEC who's who?" of Saban favorites...I want to say that the 2004 and/or 2005 draft was decimated a bit by the FO chasing running back replacements like the illustrious Lamar Gordon in the wake of Ricky Williams' dream quest, as well...Wannstedt never seemed to want to draft. It's amazing that Spielman's turned into this whiz of a GM, considering he didn't seem that great here. I don't know if it was that he was handicapped by Pornstache, or what, but it's a bit depressing...maybe he learned a thing or two.

There were some players that were a flash in the pan though, good for one year, then fell off a cliff...Matt Roth for example...dude was solid, but then just turned into Howard Hughes and disappeared...Ronnie Brown had a nice run for us, but he got hyped off a nice combine...I wanted Aaron Rodgers that year (not revisionist history), or Alex Smith, and we wound up with a running back. That class sucked...

Derek Hagan couldn't catch AIDS at a Thai bath house...Jason Allen was hurt and ineffective....that class was terrible.

Samson Satele was basically the guy we traded Wes Welker for. John Beck was 80 years old by the time we drafted him, undersized and couldn't cut it. Always though Regan Maui'a had some potential, but he couldn't cut it...that draft class was terrible (outside of Satele).

08 looked good on paper...Long looked like a guy you could plug in for 10 years. I thought we should go with Ryan, as I'm all about drafting the QBs, but Long wasn't a bad choice...he just couldn't stay healthy. Merling looked like a steal to start the 2nd round...Henne looked solid to start, but the wheels came off, OCs came in (Henning2Daboll), and he just ultimately couldn't cut the mustard...Langford wasn't bad for awhile, was definitely a nice "small school" find. Lex Hilliard was another out of Montana. I really liked him. The others were reaches and really were just burn outs, like Shawn Murphy.

2009, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Brian Hartline were all good picks. Pat White, I just don't know what the hell we were thinking with that one, other than running that stupid Wildcat offense. That was just an absolute waste of a 2nd round pick when there was potentially so much more left on the board. Complete head scratcher. The CBs were solid picks, though. So was Hartline. I thought Patrick Turner would turn out to be more than he was...Chris Clemons wasn't a bad pick, either.

2010...To me, this is one of our worst drafts, considering the players we missed on...Earl Thomas, Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, etc. We wound up with John Jerry, Jared Odrick (who really wasn't that terrible), and other illustrious players. Could have really skyrocketed the team, but we mired ourselves in mediocrity. Story of the Fins.

2011...Pouncey, D. Thomas, Clay, Jimmy Wilson are the notables...I thought Clyde Gates might be something, but wasn't. Just another reach. Pouncey's been a walking MASH unit, and Clay was solid before he left. Jimmy Wilson turned out to be a decent Special Teams player...and Daniel Thomas was underwhelming, but also fairly polarizing. Definitely not a running back of the future.

The last few of those drafts, and you see why Fist Pump was shown the door.

2012...Ireland hit on a few...Tannehilll, Lamar Miller, Olivier Vernon...but remember when Michael Egnew was going to be our version of Rob Gronkowski? lol

2013...Was pretty much a black hole in terms of drafting.

All in all, if you look at those drafts, they've been pretty bad, or pretty mediocre, and we've hit on a few players, but not enough to stay competitive. It's been bad folks, not too bad, but not too good either.

Great post. Ill have a lot of thoughts but first and fore most 2012 and 2013.....just wow.

18 players drafted combined, Ryan Tannehill is the only one on the team today. Really makes you wonder how they managed to get to the playoffs in 2016. Gase/Tannehill are foundational pieces.

The good thing we have going for us is that the last 3 drafts look better than the entire 2000s combined.

The one I can't seem to remember was Ronnie Brown. He played for 6 years but signed a 5 year contract out of college back when the contacts were massive. I can find no record of him resigning with us. But he only played part of a season twice due to injury. So was one of the seasons not counted? I can't remember what happened.

His rookie contract had an option for a 6th year that was tied to the CBA.

We never resigned him
