They thought highly enough of the young man out of Alabama that they selected him in the 3rd round of the 2016 NFL draft.
Drake’s rookie season as a rusher was fairly uneventful. With the emergence of Ajayi as the Dolphins feature back, Drake rarely saw the field on offense.
The one exception was week 16 when Ajayi was hampered by a shoulder injury. In that game, Drake rushed for 56 yards and averaged 14 yards per carry in a tough-fought win over the Bills.
Where Drake made his mark in 2016 was as a kick returner. After having only two returns through the first 7 games of the season, Drake ‘exploded’ for a 96-yard kickoff return TD that saved the game (27-23) versus the hated New York Jets.
Despite the NFL league-wide trend of “pooch-ing” the kickoff, teams started kicking away from Drake. For the season Drake averaged 30.5 yards/return.
