The Dolphins will be looking at next season earlier than they expected. While coach Adam Gase and his players might tout the importance of playing for pride in Sunday’s finale against the Bills, there are no stakes for Miami—not for this season, anyway.

As the team moves into an offseason that will require it to do significant remodeling, here are five players who seem unlikely to be back next year:

1. QB Jay Cutler
Moving on makes sense for both sides here. Cutler is too old and expensive to bring back, even as a backup to Ryan Tannehill, and he hasn’t been good this season. For $10 million, Miami got a guy who has the eighth-worst passer rating in the NFL. For Cutler’s part, he took a physical beating this year. He has over $120 million in career earnings and should be able to step straight into a broadcasting job, leaving little reason for him to come back at 35.

2. QB Matt Moore
It’s hard to imagine Moore not being here. Only John Denney, Cameron Wake and Reshad Jones have been with the Dolphins longer, and he’s stayed on through two coaching changes. But Moore and Gase don’t always seem to be in sync, and there’s no way it sat well with Moore when Gase brought in Cutler the moment Tannehill got hurt. The Dolphins also need to get younger at this position. Imagine how much more interesting Sunday’s game would be if they had an up-and-coming prospect they could debut against the Bills. Moore is an unrestricted free agent.

Your thoughts?

I think Matt Moore proved again this season that he has value as a backup as long as you don't need him to play more than a half, so I don't know that he's a lock for the team to let go.

I think that one of Pouncey or James will not return. It seems to me that the team would want to trim salary there, but also avoid having too much turnover on the line / creating too many gaps. James would be the obvious guy to keep in that situation -- to me -- but who knows?

Matt Moore needs to go. Gase doesn’t even trust him to use when a QB goes down...lol even though he’s the backup.

Don't let the door hit any one of them in the arse too hard though I will be a bit sad to see MM go as he has been nothing but a loyal confidant to RT over the past several years.

Would much rather keep James and move on from Pouncey

Tannehill needs competition now more than ever. This is probably the highest stakes he's had at to date. Bad season next yr., and it's quitin'-time. Sorry, not sorry...

Hopefully they find a way to make James stay....

With maybe re doing Suhs contract or Wake taking a paycut I wonder what's the cap hit for trading Branch...

Not going to happen. We're destined for a longer tease. 2018 figures as an uptick season so Tannehill benefits along with the team in general.

Unless Doughty and Fales can be THE guy, I am not sure how we can afford not to draft a QB because, I am guessing, FA QB's will be much too expensive. Cutler's contract ends after this week. Will he be the "break glass in case of emergency" backup plan again IF Tannehill suffers another knee injury?

The backup should be considered more than a player to play a series or a game. This lesson prepared us that he should play an entire year and be game planned against. That's the mentality of a championship team.

Agree with the first 4. Not sure its wise to let another hole open on the line. I say keep James unless he gets an insane offer.
