BEST TRAIT - Hand Usage

WORST TRAIT - Burst

RED FLAGS - Teams will likely inquire as to why the fire doesn't always appear to burn red hot for Buggs.

Isaiah Buggs is a burly interior defensive lineman who plays on the edge for Alabama in their base packages on early downs. That role won't suit his lack of athleticism well in the NFL, but Buggs is a power-playing, slow-burn pass rusher who can discard offensive linemen with his hands or run through them to the pocket as well. He's a load when he brings it, capable of lining up all over the defensive front as a capable pass rusher and consistent point-of-attack threat against the run. Can Buggs ever be a high-impact player at the next level, especially without special traits?

DE Greg Roberts Baylor 6-5 264lbs.

(Couldn't find any 2018 footage)

NFL Combine
Non-participant

Overview
Good-looking defensive end with natural play strength who moves like a big, stand-up OLB in space. Roberts had three different head coaches during his tenure at Baylor and his game might have suffered some arrested development because of it, but he does flash enough to warrant consideration as a developmental prospect. With his height, weight and athleticism, he has a shot of hearing his name called on Day 3 and could be a prime candidate for the practice squad.
Strengths
  • Well-defined with NFL-caliber size and frame
  • Size and strength to potentially play 3-4 and 4-3 end spots
  • Good knee bend for leveraged, powerful strikes
  • Meets pulling guards and tight ends with force
  • Locates ball quickly and plays with good shed-to-tackle twitch
  • Energetic and challenging to block in penetrations and twists
  • Loose and fluid in space
  • Bull-rusher with potential to do more damage with consistently timed attacks
  • Father was 1978 Outland Trophy winner at Oklahoma and five-year pro
Weaknesses
  • Lacks upfield gain over first three steps as rusher
  • Rush plan that doesn't poke enough holes in opponent's flaws
  • Allows tackles to run him past pocket rather than countering underneath
  • Hands haven't been properly honed against run or pass yet
  • Inconsistent point of attack separation
  • Has to prove he can two-gap against tackles
  • Top-heavy power with below-average base strength

PROS: Unbelievably quick to react; super instinctive. First step is almost always true. Regularly beats climbers to their landmarks on zone flow; shoots gaps the moment they appear and lives in the backfield as a disruptor and gap plugger. Makes TFLs solely based on sniffing out the play call before the snap. Slippery when shooting gaps with the ability to get skinny, then reset his hips as he clears the OL. Excels as a pursuit player at sifting through the garbage around him, constantly resetting his angles as the halfback moves.

At his best when asked to flow downhill into space--almost impossible to fool regarding who has the football and where they're going, especially when there isn't much traffic in front of him. Solid short area burst and nice length and size allow him to make difficult tackles away from his frame; can drop his hips and deliver a thud when he has a runner squared up. Has good pursuit speed and always keeps strong leverage on runners relative to sideline. Sees pullers and climbers quickly and will meet them in the trees with physicality. Can carry some TEs downfield in man coverage.

CONS:
Guilty of over-reacting to initial offensive action and thereby overpursuing. While highly instinctive reading and flowing downhill, has some trouble interpreting who's climbing/what the backfield motion is, and can get impatient and remove himself from contention within the play. Especially noteworthy on boundary plays with multiple pullers/jet motion/et cetera--jumps at shadows. Will choose to scrape when he should have gone underneath, and vice versa. Doesn't get low into blockers when exchanging power and thereby limits his displacement ability--that, and better recruitment of hands, will help him translate large and strong frame into better disruptive play within the box. Block deconstruction currently a mixed bag. Short zones are a mess right now--doesn't gain sufficient depth and will fail to carry players through space.

NFL Comparison
Ahkello Witherspoon
Overview
Press cornerback with imposing combination of size, length and speed, but in need of more work before he is game-ready. Johnson spent his first two seasons at receiver before transitioning over to the defensive side of the ball so there is still room for improvement, but also room for moldable growth. He has Day 1 traits, Day 2 talent and the consistency of a Day 3 corner, but patience and coaching could turn him into a disruptive press corner with starting potential by his second or third season.
Strengths
  • Carries imposing height, length and long speed
  • Accurate punch from press to hinder the release
  • Quick-twitch to match route breaks in his transitions
  • Speed to stay hip-to-hip with receivers
  • Excellent recovery speed to close out loose targets
  • Former wideout with above average ball skills
  • Long arms are challenging to throw over from trail coverage
  • Natural in recognition of route combos, ball tracking and high-pointing the ball
  • Adequate play strength to push past receivers in run support
  • Punt gunner with ability to run away from jammers
Weaknesses
  • Technique and instincts are still a work in progress
  • Tendency to open hips before he needs to
  • Hasn't learned to match speed changes in the route
  • Needs to play with better balance from off coverage
  • Rides high on the route rather than squeezing earlier
  • Handsy and grabby rather than trusting feet and length in coverage
  • Inconsistent technique as wrap-up tackler

NFL Comparison
Lamarcus Joyner
Overview
Savage will offer an interesting litmus test for how teams value instincts, IQ and coverage quickness against size. He sports a compact frame with a muscular build, but lacks desired height for downfield challenges and size for volume tackling. However, his sticky cover skills and ability to close on throws from all areas of the field are valuable commodities that should not be undervalued. Savage could be targeted as a hybrid defender offering two-high zone or slot cover talent.
Strengths
  • Twitchy, urgent athlete
  • Movement in space is fluid and natural
  • Quick pedal to gain depth from high-safety spot
  • Makeup speed to chase down the throw
  • Thrives in off-man coverage from slot
  • Above-average coverage IQ
  • Responsive to pattern clues laid out by QB and WR
  • Smooth hips with sharp burst to smother underneath routes at the break
  • Plus burst to close
  • Shows lurker qualities to read and jump throws by unaware quarterbacks
  • Of his 7 interceptions over the last two years, two have gone for touchdowns
  • Takes laser-focused paths to avoid traffic in run support
  • Explosive downhill trigger to run the alley or fit up into gaps
  • Always looking for work, and motor won't allow him to coast
  • Good radar to seek and tackle on the move
Weaknesses
  • Slightly undersized for an NFL safety
  • Built more like a running back than safety
  • Looks tiny when forced to match against college tight ends
  • Could struggle to elevate and challenge high-points against NFL size
  • Just average discipline in positioning between multiple downfield targets
  • Needs to build downhill momentum as tackler
  • Becomes grab-and-drag tackler when feet are stationary
  • Size could preclude success as open-field finisher

QB Brent Rypien Boise St. 6-2 210lbs.

NFL Comparison
Nick Mullens
Overview
Light on measurables, but high on intangibles, Rypien's lack of size, mobility and NFL arm talent makes it unlikely that he'll ever become a serviceable starter. What has a chance to save him is his football intelligence, accuracy and consistency. He stepped right in as a freshman and proved he could not only survive, but thrive and grow. A troubling number of interceptions were due to lack of arm strength so he needs to find a timing-based passing game in order to find a home as a back-end backup.
Strengths
  • Comfortable and experienced playing from under center
  • Smooth drop and setup and works with good rhythm
  • Compact release
  • Plays with above average football intelligence Games defenders into showing their hand before snap
  • Good eye manipulation to pull safeties out of position
  • Feels pressure develop on the edge and climbs the pocket
  • Consistent at keeping eyes trained downfield
  • Will pump and alter initial read and re-calibrate to a new target
  • Throws with timing and anticipation
  • Accurate passer on all three levels
Weaknesses
  • Falls below normal minimum standards for size
  • Hands are smallish
  • Too many fumbles from innocuous contact in the pocket
  • Small margin for error when making field side throws. Lacks arm strength to outpace ballhawks around the field
  • Interceptions come from leaving touch throws short
  • Mobility is below average and unable to threaten with feet
  • Helpless when trying to elude sudden rusher in his face
  • Gets sacked by arm tackles

NFL Comparison
Elijah McGuire
Overview
Productive runner who added weight and stepped into an every-down role and became one of the big SEC surprises in his first season in Jimbo Fisher's offense. Williams isn't overly dynamic by NFL standards, but he's a calm runner who stacks moves and eludes defenders to post his fair share of chunk runs. He's tough but undersized and might get pigeon-holed as a committee back with above-average third-down value thanks to his tenacity as a pass-blocker.
Strengths
  • Football character flies off-the-charts
  • Outspoken alpha who set the tone for the team
  • Raved about inside the program
  • Added weight in 2018 off-season to shoulder heavy workload
  • Coaches say he got stronger physically and mentally as season wore on
  • Transitioned effectively into pro-style rushing attack
  • Calm runner who stays in his shoes
  • Good stutter-go to freeze tackler and open perimeter
  • Tacklers had a hard time finishing him in space
  • Changes direction of the run without gearing down
  • Handled every-down duties and is a fighter in pass protection
  • Proved to be reliable pass catcher no matter the route
Weaknesses
  • Looks small at times on tape
  • Has a tendency to play at one speed
  • Average creativity as a runner
  • Can do a better job of pressing the line to set-up blocks
  • Would benefit from more fastball in his burst
  • Will need to better decisiveness as NFL runner
  • Struggles with sudden elusive movements when he elevates speed
  • Needs to see and plan his cuts in advance
  • Doesn't run with NFL-caliber power to stride and drive forward

NFL Comparison
Adam Humphries
Overview
While some scouts see Morgan as "just a guy" with average size and athleticism who fails to stand out as a prospect, others may appreciate his professional approach to the position and competitive demeanor. He's best judged by the sum of his parts, which takes into account his toughness and durability, as well. He doesn't open wide catch windows, but his ball skills and ability to haul in contested catches tend to make up for it. He could start off as a WR4/5 but has the chance to find playing time as he works his way up.
Strengths
  • Operates with consistently good play speed and urgency
  • Leverages open catch windows from the top of his route
  • No hesitation attacking over the middle
  • Excellent catch focus inside congested areas
  • Above-average ball skills and body control
  • Climbs ladder to pluck it at the high-point
  • Impressive ability to rescue low throws
  • Alters speed for downfield ball adjustments
  • Quick after catch with wiggle to elude early tackle attempts
  • Willing to put in work as perimeter blocker.
Weaknesses
  • Doesn't offer anything special as an athlete
  • Burst out of his breaks is average
  • Routes will drift on him
  • Plays fast but doesn't feature getaway speed
  • Missing second gear to run under deep throws
  • Benefited from favorable route combinations
  • Cornerbacks likely to squat on underneath work
  • Has to prove he can uncover against twitchy defenders.

Jacob Tamme
Overview
Despite his experience in-line and willingness to block in Jimbo Fisher's offense, he has neither the size nor strength to handle those duties as a pro. Sternberger is athletic with above-average ball skills, catch radius and route breaks that help him undercover on the second and third level. His paychecks will be tied to his pass-catching so he'll need to play stronger through route contact and with better focus when contested. He has eventual starter potential as a move tight-end who can function as a big WR3/4 from the slot.
Strengths
  • Talented route-runner with no wasted steps
  • Maintains pressure with good route speed
  • Sets off-man coverage up before accelerating past
  • Excellent hand-eye for smooth grabs on the run without breaking stride
  • Runs his routes like a big receiver
  • Keeps the same energy in and out of breaks
  • Slick outside-in breaks to cross-face coverage
  • Above-average hands
  • Plus in-air adjustments and grab radius
  • Athleticism and route savvy could create matchup issues
  • Runs with vision after the catch
  • Able to be shuffled around the field with various groupings
Weaknesses
  • Slightly undersized
  • Run blocking isn't where it needs to be
  • Gets caved into the run lane by edge strength
  • Initial block engagement lacks necessary leverage
  • Allows backside leakage due poor angles
  • Needs longer sustain as blocker in space
  • Route bullies throw his timing and focus off
  • Inconsistent finishing catches through contact
  • Can improve body positioning to protect catch space

BEST TRAIT - Body Control

WORST TRAIT - Play Strength

RED FLAGS - None

Bradbury came to NC State as a tight end recruit and leaves as an outstanding NFL interior offensive line prospect. His technical refinement and consistency is even more impressive considering the relative newness to his position. Given his lateral mobility and proven success in the Wolfpack's zone blocking run scheme, he projects most favorably to the same role in the NFL. Bradbury's range as a blocker will be major asset to him and his NFL offense. By year three, Bradburry has the upside to become a solid starter that is primed to sign a lucrative second contract.
https://thedraftnetwork.com/player/garrett-bradbury

Bradbury leads the group as a high-IQ player with outstanding blocking skills. The former N.C. State star displays excellent agility climbing to the second level but also flashes enough pop to move defenders off the ball. As a great communicator, he makes all of the checks and adjustments at the line.

Overview
Active defensive lineman who might need to find his fit as a one-gapping nose tackle in a 4-3 defense. Saunders has been disruptive against a lower level of competition, but his lack of anchor is a major concern against NFL competition. If he can improve his conditioning to become more disruptive for longer stretches, he'll have a shot to make a roster.
Strengths
  • Quick, strong slaps to displace blocker's hands and separate from the block
  • Potential to become above average hand-fighter if he plays faster
  • Above average feel for side-stepping or clubbing lateral blocks
  • Able to split double teams when he's allowed to work the A-gap
  • Slap-swim is go-to as quick-win move off the snap
  • Better athletic ability than expected with tight-quarter twitch
  • Bounding feet to make sudden attacks to blocker's edge or spin out of blocks.
Weaknesses
  • Lacks sustained effort throughout game due to conditioning
  • Needs greater urgency to get off blocks more consistently
  • Squatty frame with short arms
  • Can be engulfed by size and power
  • Gets walked out of his gap against down blocks
  • Unlikely to control point of attack in the pros Lacks desired pass-rush attributes to transfer college sack production to NFL.

Robert Geathers
Overview
A 4-3 base end who won't wow teams with his frame or athleticism but who will pique their interest with his rugged play demeanor and surprising rush acumen. Collier is stout at the point of attack and will offer some value as a power rusher who is more likely to press the pocket than become an acclaimed finisher. If his attitude is right, he could develop into an average rotational defensive end.
Strengths
  • Rough and rugged
  • Aggressive with power to set a strong edge
  • Strikes with quick extension and lock-out to keep his frame clean
  • Has adequate anchor to fight for his real estate at point of attack
  • Consistent to contain when run play flows his direction
  • Hands are equally violent and sudden
  • Puts pre-snap thought into his rush plan
  • Cleverly ties head fake with quick lateral steps to find his half-man positioning
  • Sudden acceleration into tackles to bull rush and walk them into the pocket
  • Punch-and-release move can topple waist-benders
Weaknesses
  • Only one season as full-time starter
  • Slow reaction time to the snap
  • Not a natural knee-bender
  • Lacks change-of-direction quickness to mirror movement and tackle
  • Upfield burst is dull whether standing or with a hand in the ground
  • Easy to find and punch when attempting to bend the corner as rusher
  • Inconsistent sack finisher against pocket-mobile quarterbacks
  • Struggle to sustain motor for secondary rush production

Tahir Whitehead
Overview
Free safety-turned-linebacker with good cover skills who has filled out his frame and checks the size and speed boxes, but Pratt is still in the process of learning to man his position. He plays upright in space and is unorthodox and inconsistent in taking on blocks and finding his run fits. However, he plays with good lateral athleticism and burst and found his way to the football enough to fill out the stat sheet in his lone year as a starter. He will continue to improve with time and could become an eventual starter at either SAM or WILL.
Strengths
  • Has experience at inside and outside linebacker
  • Posted production in all the statistical columns in 2018
  • Controlled stepper in scrape to pursue
  • Plays with adequate short-area stop-and-go movement
  • Backside lateral burst to find playside tackles
  • Play speed to range and chase
  • Above-average reactive twitch to get in on tackles from tough angles
  • Takes pride as a striker and tackle finisher
  • Runs feet and wraps up through contact
  • Times up blitzes and lays into quarterbacks
  • Former safety with fluid, fast drops in space
  • Has ability to cover tight ends
Weaknesses
  • Only one year of starting experience
  • Needs plenty of work with take-on technique, including hand-usage
  • Plays with tight ankles and below-average bend
  • Awkward and upright into contact
  • Not a natural gap-filler
  • Skills to process are underdeveloped
  • Lacks some feel for blocking schemes and play development
  • No awareness for when he's stepping into trap blocks
  • Run fits can feel random at times
  • High pad level limits change-of-direction quickness

J.C. Jackson
Overview
Death, taxes and David Long sitting under a receiver's chin waiting to jam and bully the release - all three are inevitable. He lacks height, length and makeup burst, but it is hard to find tape where those areas came back to haunt him very often. He's patient from press, stays connected to routes underneath, but may have to adjust to off-man and prove he can withstand vertical challenges against taller targets. He's not as long, loose or fast as teams like, but he's a consistent cover man with the talent to find reps early in his career.
Strengths
  • Weather-tested
  • Quarterbacks rarely tried him and rarely completed those attempts
  • Compact and physical
  • Plays with cozy coverage in receiver's chest underneath
  • Strength and footwork to grind through the release
  • Plays with excellent focus on the route
  • Has speed to pace hip-to-hip downfield
  • Parks under opponent's chin from press
  • Patiently waits out release fakes
  • Rarely gets over-extended and out of balance
  • Quick interchange of routes from short zone
  • Tenacious competitor in all phases
Weaknesses
  • Short for an outside cornerback
  • May need time to adjust if moved to slot
  • Can be stacked by big bodies
  • Lacks length to play around opponents and into passing lane
  • Doesn't have big makeup burst to chase
  • Could struggle to handle downfield jump balls
  • Shorter target to throw over in Cover-2
  • Not much tape to gauge ability to survive outside of press
  • Teams may view him as scheme-dependent
