2019 Nfl Draft Prospects

S Lukas Denis Boston College 5-11 190lbs.

NFL Combine
Height: 5-11
Weight: 190
Arm: 31 1/4
Hand: 9 1/2
40: 4.65
225: 16
VJ: 33.5
BJ: 9'8"
20S: 4.09
60S: 11.42
3C: 6.89

Overview
This is a draft that has players at a variety of positions who will test historical norms when it comes to size. Denis falls in this camp. While he'’s smooth and fits the athletic standards of a single-high safety, he is painfully thin for the position and his success rate as a tackler is below average against his level of competition. Size matters to many teams at safety so it wouldn't be surprising to see teams consider him as a backup at both deep safety and cornerback.
Strengths
  • Former wideout with outstanding ball skills
  • Above-average timing to attack the catch point
  • Gives good effort to match leapers on jump-ball scenarios
  • Shows willingness to take aggressive paths to the football
  • Ball-tracking helped reel in 7 interceptions in 2017
  • Dangerous with the ball after interception
  • Very athletic with free-wheeling feet and smooth hips
  • Able to redirect momentum for sudden change of direction in space
  • Able to roll down over the slot and cover receivers
  • Possesses burst to range over top
Weaknesses
  • Monster ball production in 2017 might be outlier
  • Needs better break anticipation on intermediate routes
  • Would benefit from tighter squeeze on dig routes
  • Lacks bulk and play strength to match tight ends in space
  • Needs quicker read-and-react over the top
  • Would benefit from better depth and angles in his deep help
  • Excessive missed tackles due to his approach
  • Runs in quickly in run support but tackles like a cornerback
  • Lacks aggression and defaults to arm tackles

QB Manny Wilkins Arizona St. 6-3 200lbs.

NFL Combine
Non-participant

NFL Comparison
Matt Moore
Overview
Smooth operator working with a thin frame, but a lively arm whose confidence and ball placement promoted a solid level of consistency over the last two seasons. Wilkins slender stature and lack of experience as a full-field reader could work against him, but he caught the attention of NFL teams with a strong pro day workout showing off his arm talent and ability to throw from the pocket and on the move. Sure, he's smallish, but the tools and demeanor are where they need to be in order to become a decent NFL backup.
Strengths
  • Light, bounding feet for quick set-ups in pocket
  • Twitchy ball-handler for expedited RPO throws
  • Smooth and composed in his delivery
  • Shows ability to step and drive throws into the deep middle
  • Ball placement is intentional and accurate
  • Leads receivers on posts, crossing and go routes
  • Has arm strength to push it deep
  • Hangs it up for big receivers to make a play
  • Mobility to elude sack attempts or threaten with his legs
  • Has 20 rushing touchdowns during career
Weaknesses
  • Slim frame falls way below NFL standards
  • Benefited from quick game and pre-snap reads
  • Inconsistent with his post-snap plan vs
  • blitz
  • Needs the ball to come out quicker when extra rushers come
  • Can be nonchalant with short, touch throws
  • Feet and processing get antsy when the pocket clouds
  • Needs feel for pocket slides without dropping eyes
  • Has to prove he can get through NFL progressions

NFL Comparison
Mike Gillislie
Overview
Productive, willful runner whose combination of functional patience and aggressive urgency helped him find his niche as an every-down workhorse. While he has the ability to create yards for himself with adequate elusiveness and power, he's not a slasher or banger by NFL standards and he lacks burst to produce chunk plays on a regular basis. Mattison is a jack-of-all-trades backup with the ability to step into a heavy-duty role if called upon. His talent as a pass-catcher could move him up the RB food-chain.
Strengths
  • Determined runner who can carry lively legs deep into games
  • Averaged 30 carries per game over final five in 2018 and thrived
  • Runs with above-average balance
  • Decisive running style
  • Leaped over open-field tacklers multiple times
  • Finds additional power as finisher near the goal line
  • Probes with good downhill urgency and finds the crease
  • Outstanding hands out of backfield
  • Adjusts to throws outside frame and has soft hands to absorb fastballs
  • Hits it upfield quickly after catch
  • Chip blocks have some bite
Weaknesses
  • Plays with a little bit of hip tightness
  • Multi-stepper to make lateral getaways
  • Prolonged open-field cuts
  • Does not appear to have a breakaway gear
  • Had just nine carries of 15-plus yards in 2018
  • Runs brave and takes too many direct hits
  • Not enough juice to turn play-side corners on stretch plays
  • Could use quicker recognition of pass-protection duties
  • Hand technique needs improvement as blocker

WR Gary Jennings West Virginia 6-1 214lbs.

40: 4.43
225: 20
VJ: 37
BJ: 10'7"
20S: 4.15
3C: 7.32

Overview
Possession receiver with impressive combination of size, speed and contested catch toughness. Jennings was one of the fastest players at the Senior Bowl, according to Zebra Technology tracking, and his 4.42 combine time and huge numbers in explosive testing are sure to push him up draft boards. He needs to play faster and sharpen his routes to become more than a traits-based backup.
Strengths
  • Reliable as possession target
  • Presentable target as zone-beater in space
  • Supple and sudden hands with good catch strength
  • Shields defenders from the ball
  • Above-average focus and play strength to finish contested catches
  • Able to play through physical coverage
  • Runs with toughness to pull drag-down tacklers with him
Weaknesses
  • Early speed into routes is non-threatening
  • Unable to accelerate past press on outside release
  • Gradual into turns and breaks with below-average burst coming out
  • Lacking suddenness to uncover in tight quarters
  • Runs into uncatchable positions rather than adjusting route
  • Lacks wiggle and burst to elude and bolt after catch
  • Chunk plays created by scheme

TE Thomas Sweeney Boston College 6-4 251lbs.

NFL Combine
Height: 6-4
Weight: 251
Arm: 32 3/4
Hand: 9 3/4
40: 4.84
225: 17

NFL Comparison
Nick Vannett
Overview
Reliable combination tight end with the competitiveness to handle the work asked from his position at Boston College. He'll need to get bigger and stronger for run-blocking duties as an NFL "Y" tight end, but he does have the ball skills to offer himself up as a reliable underneath option from time to time. Sweeney's lackluster play speed and athletic traits could limit his draft stock, but he should find a job as late-round, backup tight end.
Strengths
  • Three straight seasons of production and consistency
  • Puts coverage on his hip and shields defender from passing lane
  • Presents as target as soon as he clears coverage
  • Weaves to adjust path against route traffic
  • Physical at top of routes to get head-start into separation
  • Reliable hands
  • Good effort to lift with rolled hips into blocks
  • Down blocks cave the edge to clear pathway over tackle
  • Asked to handle a variety of blocking duties from both a "Y" and wing spot
Weaknesses
  • High-cut and lacking proportional lower body
  • Leggy build leads to elevated pad level as run blocker
  • Needs better knee bend as drive blocker
  • Allows outside hand and elbow to drift too wide after initial strike
  • Lunges and leans for recovery when he fails to strike cleanly as blocker
  • Open-field gait looks heavy and strained
  • Route speed can be a bit monotonous
  • Lack of separation speed might limit his effectiveness beyond first level

OG Nate Davis NC Charlotte 6-3 316lbs.

Davis - #64

NFL Combine
Height: 6-3

Arm: 33 1/8
Hand: 9 1/2
40: 5.24
10 : 1.84
225: 23
VJ: 26.0
BJ: 8'11"
20S: 4.83
3C: 7.94

NFL Comparison
Shawn Lauvao
Overview
Davis carries good power and outstanding foot quickness on a stout frame and has proven to be consistent and effective in a variety of blocking schemes. His footwork and body control help him square his targets into his power zone, but a lack of arm length creates some inconsistencies in sustaining blocks. He has some flaws, but there doesn't appear to be glaring holes to overcome his areas of strength and become a starting guard early in his career.
Strengths
  • Wide, thick-boned frame carries desired mass and musculation
  • Tremendous bend in hips, knees and ankles allow him to drop low in his stance
  • Smooth, easy gait leading the way on pull blocks
  • Agility and body control to locate, time up and wipe out targets on the move
  • Strength and movement skills pair with any run scheme
  • Generates pop on contact regardless of approach angle
  • Drives with wide base creating movement on pin blocks
  • Adequate timing on work-up blocks to linebackers
  • Feet stay active and choppy in pass sets
  • Slide to mirror resembles a basketball player
  • Impressive foot quickness to stay in front of edge rushers when forced into tackle duty
  • Reactive ability to recover and sustain against rush counters.
Weaknesses
  • Falls a shade below NFL size average for starting guards
  • Can get big-boyed on occasion against bull-rushers looking to push the pocket
  • Needs greater urgency to step and help secure leaky edges in pass pro
  • Evaluators have voiced concerns of lack of arm length
  • Frenetic coming out of his stance and getting into his blocks
  • Needs to fight the urge to pop up tall out of stance, losing some natural leverage at point of attack
  • Needs more consistency in hand placement to improve block sustain
  • Will drop head into contact and allow weight to drift too far forward on second-level blocks.

DT Ed Alexander Louisiana St. 6-1 319lbs.

NFL Combine
Non-participant

Draft Projection
Priority free agent
Overview
Burly nose tackle possessing NFL frame and strength who finds himself on the ground far too often for an anchor-based player. Alexander's knees have caused problems for him over the years which may contribute to his stiff-legged playing style and issues with contact balance. While the upper body power is evident, he struggles to consistently control the point of attack when asked to 2-gap. He could be targeted as a priority free agent as a nose by odd or even front teams, but faces longer odds to make a roster.
Strengths
  • Thick frame with girthy lower half
  • Explodes from hips out of stance and into neutral zone
  • Punch and separate comes easily with his power
  • Eats into double teams with adequate success rate
  • Much tougher to reach block than expected
  • Good punch and shuffle to mirror zone runs
Weaknesses
  • Plays with stiff knees and is straight-legged
  • Struggles with contact balance and ends up on the ground too much
  • Below-average read and recognition
  • Tight hips and narrow base limit tackle range
  • Effort level can take sharp decline when he gasses out
  • Has dealt with knee issues throughout career Pass rush devoid of counters

DE Kyle Phillips Tennessee 6-4 277lbs.

NFL Combine
Non-participant

Draft Projection
Priority free agent
Overview
He has the size and length to draw interest, but a lack of explosiveness and below average ability to hold his ground against the run hurts his cause. Phillips was out of position at the 5 and 4i techniques in Tennessee's defense but had occasional flashes as a pure 4-3 defensive end. He's more project than prospect at this point, but additional muscle and technique could give him a roster shot down the road.
Strengths
  • Has traits for future development
  • More upper body power should unlock better consistency at point of attack
  • More comfortable and impactful on the edge
  • Physical in challenging tight ends
  • Shows signs of weaponizing arm length as a rusher
  • Works his feet through contact to find the edge
  • Plays with some bend as a rusher
  • Good change of direction to chase scrambling quarterbacks
  • Uses active hands to deflect passes
Weaknesses
  • Initial movement lacks explosiveness
  • Missing the base strength to withstand power
  • Gets put on a dolly and rolled out of the gaps
  • Stays pinned against down blocks
  • Needs to shed with better twitch and quickness
  • Chase motor will die on him when play is extended
  • Loses contain responsibilities due to lack of instincts
  • Sluggish lateral movements in edge-to-edge rush
  • Pad level is too high when making counter moves

ILB Bobby Okereke Stanford 6-1 239lbs.

40: 4.59
VJ: 33.5
BJ: 10'2"
20S: 4.26
3C: 7.25

Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5
Overview
Undersized but instinctive and rangy, Okerke plays fast and is generally on the right track with his initial reads and response to play development. While he's fairly sound from a technical standpoint, his lack of size and strength shows up in both tackling and downhill duties against blockers. He has adequate talent to drop and cover in space and his experience on special teams gives him a shot to become a quality NFL backup.
Strengths
  • Productive linebacker who finds the football
  • Plays with consistent football smarts
  • Quick to diagnose and out-race runner to designed rush path
  • Long, loose slides when scraping to the football
  • Long-armed with ability to punch and separate from climbing blocks
  • Burst to prevent runner from splitting linebackers up to third level
  • Good recognition of screen development
  • Able to slip blocks in space and get into tackles
  • Rangy with sideline-to-sideline speed
  • Good awareness and communication from zone
  • Athleticism to handle short-area man coverage
  • Experience as a core special-teams player
Weaknesses
  • Undersized as inside linebacker
  • Absorbs majority of force when meeting lead blocks in hole
  • Needs earlier counter-attack to handle climbing blocks
  • Below-average base to maintain contact balance
  • Gets too froggy racing to his spot and loses leverage
  • Play will get out of control in space
  • Comes in hot rather than coming to balance
  • Sluggish in change of direction
  • Excessive number of missed and broken tackles
  • Too many arm tackles and not enough squared strikes
  • Needs to bring feet with him as a tackler to prevent sliding off

Dude -- you do some serious work!

Well played.

I'm just glad there's no final exam on the material you're presenting!

Have you prepared your own mock?

If so I'd love to see...

Thanks!

CB Corey Ballentine Washburn 5-11 196lbs.

40: 4.47
225: 15
VJ: 39.5
BJ: 11'3"
20S: 4.14
3C: 6.82

Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5
Overview
Explosive, NFL-caliber athlete with outstanding speed and plus short-area quickness to match routes and drive on throws. Ballentine's long speed, play strength and twitch will be coveted by teams looking for man-cover talent. While he could find early reps as a plus special teams performer, his trip to the Senior Bowl should give teams an early indication of how quickly he can acclimate to a step up in competition in coverage.
Strengths
  • High character with same work ethic in the classroom that he has on the field
  • Arms dangle down like ivy vines from his frame
  • Uses length and play strength as disruptive tools from press
  • Successful college sprinter with short area burst and recovery speed deep
  • Able to wait as long as possible to open and run when challenged by vertical push
  • Quick-twitch in feet for sharp lateral change of direction
  • Possesses ability to comfortably mirror routes from backpedal in off-man
  • Adequate feel for route development behind him in zone coverage
  • Uses length and explosive leaping to challenge throws at the high point
  • Plays with physical demeanor in attacking perimeter blockers
  • Wrap-up striker who looks to drive deep into runner's legs rather than arm tackling
  • Special teams ace with ability to return kicks, cover kicks, and block kicks
Weaknesses
  • Still has room for growth with awareness and instincts. Will void his area responsibility to chase a route that he shouldn't
  • Appears more comfortable from off-ball than press
  • Could struggle early on to match and stay connected to NFL press release
  • Lack of competition could require additional team patience as he acclimates

S Marvell Tell Southern California 6-2 198lbs.

NFL Combine
Height: 6-2
Weight: 198
Arm: 33 1/8
Hand: 9 3/4
VJ: 42
BJ: 11'4"
20S: 4.01
3C: 6.83

Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5
Overview
Athletic safety prospect with fluid movement skills and cover talent, but a thin frame that is likely to be a concern for teams who are unwilling to relax physical standards for the position. Tell has enough speed to play with range, and the twitch to close out and challenge throws in his area. His lack of physicality and consistency as a tackler could be a long-term concern and the same could be said about his hustle, which must improve. His coverage traits are appealing, but his floor might be lower than teams would like.
Strengths
  • Tall, long and athletic
  • Glides around the field with desired fluidity
  • Versatile with ability to line up over the slot
  • Able to pedal, open and sprint to top speed quickly
  • Recognizes pattern development and route breaks
  • Quick feet with loose hips for quality coverage transitions
  • Adequate at maintaining feel through the route in man coverage
  • Good twitch for burst to close on slants and crossing routes
  • Physical traits could allow for increased ball production as a pro
  • Takes good angles into his run fits
  • Natural feel as blitzer with good timing and ability to slip blocks
Weaknesses
  • Built like a tall cornerback with thin legs and arms
  • NFL tackling duties are a concern
  • Always the nail and never the hammer as tackler
  • Struggles to stop big bodies from dragging him for more yards
  • Plays with a lack of discipline from high safety
  • Foggy field awareness when balancing between multiple routes
  • Loses "deeper than the deepest" responsibilities
  • Reads routes, but needs to improve at reading quarterbacks
  • Disappointing hustle to rush to the football
  • Urgency away from the ball must improve

QB Jake Dolegala C. Connecticut St. 6-6 240lbs.

NFL Combine
Non- participant

Draft Projection
Round 5-6
NFL Comparison
Paxton Lynch
Overview
Intriguing developmental quarterback with outstanding size, NFL arm talent and a profile that makes improvement easier to project. Dolegala's production is unimpressive in a vacuum, but he had very little talent surrounding him and was hurt by excessive drops. He needs to throw with better timing and placement as a pro and learning to read defenses will take time. He is a Day 3 talent with projectable upside, but the floor is also expected to be lower for him.
Strengths
  • Good size and overall durability
  • Numbers across the board saw an upswing this season
  • Natural and confident throwing from rollout in either direction
  • Squares shoulders to deliver throws on the move
  • Experienced working under center
  • Maintains a level of poise when pocket heats up
  • Smooth, quick feet in dropback and setup
  • NFL arm strength
  • Ball handling happens with good pace
  • Massive 11 1/8-inch hands
Weaknesses
  • Had 23 fumbles over three years as starter
  • Accuracy and ball placement are below average
  • Needs to do a better job of throwing receivers open
  • Inconsistent timing to get the ball out
  • Lunges up and into front foot when driving the ball
  • Makes receivers break stride
  • Needs to hang in a tick longer against pressure
  • Not much feel for trajectory on deep throws
  • Rushes it out and underthrows target in face of pressure
  • Difficult transition against NFL speed and disguised coverages
